4.0 étoiles sur 5 clear and concise introduction to rock guitar - especially theory 6 août 2007
Par Santoku, Mr. - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Broché
A long time ago, I gave this book 3 stars - because I was new to guitar and when you're a newb, everything is difficult, and even good explanations don't seem to suffice. But now having a bit of experience, I can say Beginning Rock Guitar teaches the fundamental concepts very clearly and concisely, without unnecessary verbiage.

In contrast, Guitar For Dummies is very good too, but is a much more leisurely, tutorial-style teaching approach that talks a lot. This book is not as absolutely beginner-ish; it doesn't have much helpful tips and encouragement to help you through the places where beginners often have trouble (for example the difficulties of physically playing open chords and especially barre chords).

There are many thorough exercises to practice the concepts taught (and the included audio CD shows you how they should sound) but they can get tedious and tiresome because there are no actual songs. But lots of practice riffs and licks - many of them are labeled "in the style of..." (meaning they are almost identical to...) material from Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Guns N' Roses, Nirvana, etc. There are also generic blues chord progressions which you're encouraged to improvise over top with your own lead melodies. You'll be making your own bits of music and surprising yourself in doing so.

This book excels at clearly teaching basic music theory and showing how it's applied. It's also great as a refresher or reference to come back to later. At the end you'll find a list of recommended actual rock songs for practice...but most of them are waaay beyond beginner level. Note this book doesn't talk about equipment or how to get a particular guitar tone.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Too much information-not for a young beginner 22 mai 2014

I recommended this book to a student as I have the first two blues guitar books by the same publisher and I enjoy using them. My main complaint is that for a beginner, this is not very straight forward. For starters the beginning of the book is loaded with theory. Now I am a trained musician and understand the theory part, but a beginner, especially a young one, is not going to need all this information right off the bat. I also did not like the initial lessons presented in the book. The first lesson is about power chords, an obvious place to start for rock guitar, but the problem is that they give a chord diagram for shows how to play a power chord with the octave, which I think is a technique that should come after you learn the basic root 5th power chord (unless you already know barre chords which I recommend). It goes on to give a lesson using the power chord with an open E string, which can be confusing to a beginner. I think many books don't really know how to cut to the chase and only give you what you need to know to get started. If you don't know how to play guitar and are starting out, I recommend learning the open chords first, followed by basic barre chords. Much of this info is easily gleamed off the internet. Many people want to circumvent the fundamentals of guitar and get straight to rocking out, but I really think that's not the way to go. Open chords, barre chords, power chords, and scales-that's about all there is to it (notice how I omitted theory). There is a lot of good information in here, but a bit too convoluted for a beginner.
4.0 étoiles sur 5 No audio examples with Kindle edition 12 décembre 2013

I am reviewing the Kindle edition. I have owned it 6 days and I really hate giving this book less than a 5. I bought the Kindle edition, which unbeknownst to me, does not appear to have the audio examples. As soon as I get my refund I will be purchasing the hard copy, which comes with a CD.

There is one other problem with the Kindle edition, at least on my first generation Kindle Fire. Some of the material on the bottom of the pages is cut off. Usually not enough to be unusable, but enough to be annoying.

This is the first time I have bought a method book for the Kindle. It was not a bad experience and you can read ahead while waiting for the kids. Sometimes the notes / tab are a bit small for those of us with older eyes.

When the book was first opened all of the pages fell out from it's binding. Very poor construction. To be fair, regarding the books content, it is very good.

This is a very useful book. Combined with the accompanying CD this book is a great resource for beginning guitarists wanting to play rock guitar.
