An Evocative French Love Story

Men leave, says Bella.

There is Jean-Louis - French, a successful Paris lawyer and wealthy, elegant and a good-looker, but arrogant, selfish and scornful of ‘losers’.

And he is married and the father of two daughters.

Colin - English, a writer, cultured, kind and protective - steps into Bella’s life, but in his own words, “I always run. I always have to be elsewhere, in some other place.”

Will Jean-Louis leave his wife? Will Colin stop running? Bella, alone this winter at her guest house on the beautiful Normandy coast of France, recalls words once said - pray that your loneliness will spur you into finding something to live for, something great enough to die for - and she hopes that this ‘something’ will be either Jean-Louis or Colin.

Romantic, intelligent and truly evocative of the sights, sounds and tastes of rural Normandy; Bella…A French Life will stay with you long after you have finished reading it.

Biographie de l'auteur

Marilyn lives and writes in Paris. She writes whatever takes her fancy: spoof news, book reviews, posts for her blog, gossip about showbiz stars, short stories, books, poetry. She also reports on crime. She was born in British Colonial Africa and is a British national. Eight years ago she became interested in the Second World War French serial killer, Dr Marcel Petiot and she researched him for two years. Over the next two tears she wrote DIE IN PARIS and, then, for the following two, rewrote it and then edited the rewrites.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A wonderful story. 13 décembre 2013
Format:Format Kindle
Set in Normandy, France this is a love story, which was born in the tragedy of war. When Bella’s parents fell in love, it was against all the rules, however, rules, as they say, are there to be broken, and in the face of adversity, their love endured.

If you live, or have lived in a small rural community, you will know that although they are tight knit and very supportive, these communities forget nothing, events are retold through generations even after many years have past.

Bella’s story is one of tragedy, acceptance, love and longing, and of two very different men Jean-Louis, the charismatic Frenchman and Colin, a thoughtful English writer.

The author has written a wonderful story, which is beautifully descriptive and held my attention until the very end.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Extraordinary book by Marilyn Z. Tomlins 2 décembre 2013

I have never known the cruelties of war. Have you?

I never knew the hunger that comes from having the most limited food ration for months; I never had to go out into the forest to find food, eat grass or try to investigate what plants were edible and which were not.

I never felt that terrible anguish looking at my brother, my father or my son leaving to a war from where they may not return, may not return complete, may not return healthy, or may not return sane.

I never experienced that abstract hate against, not a person, but a nation; a hate for a whole group of people that I had never met.

And I never had that terrible rancor and oppression feeling, watching my country invaded by force by others; others who said they were better than us; others who claimed that everything that we owned, was now theirs, just because they were better at war than we were.

Because I did not go to war and neither did my father or my grandfather, I could not write about it: it would never sound truthful.

But reading “Bella… A French Life” by Marilyn Z. Tomlins I learned that a war does not end when a peace treaty is signed: a war goes on for generations, hurting new children before they are even born, pitting them against each other for decades and decades, perhaps until a new and more menacing enemy shows up on the horizon.

Bella is the child of a WWII German soldier and a French woman. Need I say more?

Time and time again Marilyn has shown us that she is an expert in the Second World War. Reading her, you realize that her knowledge comes not only from studying the subject, but perhaps from hearing family histories from a father, an uncle, a grandparent or someone in the family who experienced the horrors first hand: her narrative feels that personal and close; it hurts.

I don’t know if Bella’s destiny was sealed by a war that was declared years before she was born; I don't know if there was even an opportunity for her to escape destiny or if she is just not strong enough; I just know I saw her torn between the post war France and two loves on a romance story that is different from everything else I have read before in that genre.

I sincerely envy Marilyn's ability to interweave three different timelines in one single book: she jumps naturally between the present, a not so far away romance and a tormented childhood. Her changes in time and narrative seem natural and that is extremely hard to do. Yet she does it time and time again with grace and elegance, imitating the way our own brain works when we remember tormented memories that do not seem to go away.

Read Bella's story slowly and learn about her singular life; be prepared to be happy and sad and angry. But do read it.
And be prepared for Marilyn's next book. I know I am.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Another good read from Marilyn Tomlins 29 novembre 2013

Bella tells her story in two tenses - in the past as a post-war child stigmatised by having a German father, as a failed doctor and as the lover of wealthy, sophisticated Jean-Louis, and in the present as a spinster running her dead parents' upmarket guest house in Normandy, near Mont St Michel.

Her life, although unfulfilled, seems to be on an even keel. The guest house is closed for winter, until an English writer turns up and persuades her to let him to stay while he finishes a book. At first uncertain, she nevertheless allows him to take up residence, and although she tries to ignore his obvious attraction to her, she gradually succumbs.

Switching between the past and present drives the narrative, as the reader is led along and then left dangling for a while as Bella's story switches between her earlier life and her present life.

The scenes of French life are well drawn, the local characters, the tourists, the changing sea, the local market and activity around the local bar/café. Bella's slightly quirky style of narration makes her come across plausibly as a non-native English speaker. This is far from being a Mills and Boon romance. It is a story of love lost, love rekindled, of hope. The eventual outcome is unexpected.

I thought this a well-written and unusual love story that maintained my interest from start to finish.

This is the second book I have read by Marilyn Tomlins. Her first book, Die in Paris, the true story of a wartime serial killer, is an equally good read.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 The scent of love and trust 16 février 2014

This is a holiday book, that is to say, you do not need to be on holiday to enjoy it, but even to pick it up for a forty minute lunch break will make you feel like the toils of your life have simply slipped away, and you are transported into the fibre of a culture that all non French people go all starry eyed about.

It must be said that this is foremost a great and important story; I rue the day should we ever decide that what the world did to itself in the middle part of the last century has become cliched and told its final tale.

Secondly, the way Marilyn has approached this, through the life of Bella, is both innovative and intriguing.

I believe this to be the first time where a book written in my tongue of English has had me thinking in the language of its origin. This takes skill and cunning in it's design and construction, and I went gladly along for the ride, to the point where I found only one page remaining and a heart rate that needed calming.

There is a bridge to Bella - cross her if you dare!

Come on all you French film industry people, you make the best films in the world. Pick up Bella and do her justice....

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A romantic yet sad love story 16 janvier 2014

The love story of two men and a woman + wartime background + French scenes, what does this formula produce?

A well-written story by Marilyn Tomlins, a book that you won’t want to put down once you began reading it. The author successful presented the romantic French life, probably since she lives and writes in Paris. I have never been to France but have got a sense of the French atmosphere, especially the rural community.

To write a story with the past and the present intervening is uneasy, the author managed to do it quite well. I was hooked on the story from the beginning to the end. The story is long but you won’t feel bored to read it. There is a twist in the end, which made me feel sad, but that’s life, life is full of regrets and mishaps, isn’t it?

Overall, “Bella… A French Life” is a good read.
