Présentation de l'éditeur

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, War Horse, Star Trek: Into Darkness, The Hobbit trilogy, Twelve Years a Slave, August: Osage County, The Fifth Estate; Hedda Gabler, After the Dance, Frankenstein; Hawking, To the Ends of the Earth, The Last Enemy, Parade's End, and, of course, Sherlock. For most actors, these stellar cinematic, theatrical, and television events would be the highlights of a lifetime's work. On Benedict Cumberbatch's résumé they are only a few of many entries. Especially since 2010, his performances have garnered a plethora of best actor awards, both in the theatre (Evening Standard Theatre Award, Critics Circle Theatre Award, and Olivier Award), by playing the dual roles of Victor Frankenstein and the Creature in the National Theatre's Frankenstein, and on television (Broadcasting Press Guild Award, Critics Choice Television Award, Crime Thriller Award, and TV Choice Award), by starring as the titular Holmes in the BBC's Sherlock. Add these and other recent accolades to nearly a decade's nominations and awards (such as the Golden Nymph as best actor in Hawking), and it's easy to see why Benedict Cumberbatch is often hailed as the actor of his generation. Cumberbatch's body of work further includes indie films, radio plays and series, television documentaries, live dramatic readings, multimedia advertisements, and even the occasional stint as a fashion model. He often shares an intriguing perspective on his profession, as evidenced in sometimes controversial interviews. He has become so much in demand that online box offices crash when tickets for his performances go on sale, and, before a Cheltenham Literature Festival Q&A session, fans overwhelmed Twitter when so many responded immediately to a call for questions. Cumberbatch consistently is a top name on lists ranging from sex appeal to global influence. In 2012 he beat David Beckham in the former and U.S. President Barack Obama in the latter. Increasingly, part of Cumberbatch's job involves the role of celebrity. Benedict Cumberbatch is at a pivotal point in his profession, and his career trajectory especially as documented in entertainment media permits a closer examination of just what it means to be a celebrity or star in Britain or the U.S. and how an actor may be perceived very differently in London or Hollywood. This performance biography is an analysis of a man in transition from working actor to multimedia star, as well as the balance between actor and celebrity. It looks at what makes this actor so well suited to play one of popular culture's iconic characters, Sherlock Holmes, and how Sherlock is so well suited to propel Cumberbatch toward greater global fame.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Treasure trove of details for fans of Benedict Cumberbatch 10 juin 2013
Par Bonnie - Publié sur Amazon.com
I've given this four stars for comprehensiveness. This lengthy book describes in great detail the facts of the professional career of the magnetic and talented star of BBC Sherlock, and the public response to this work to date. As such it is a good resource for his many fans, myself among them, and well deserves a place on their bookshelves.

A brief introduction by Sherlockology, the well respected website devoted to BBC Sherlock, is careful to note that the book is about the scope and the public perception of Benedict Cumberbatch's work, rather than the private individual.

The details on his film and television work will no doubt send many running to Amazon and Netflix and other sources to fill in their collections. The author, a pop culture expert and teacher in Florida, appears not to have first hand knowledge about her subject, but her information is based on conversations with colleagues and meticulous research which included combing through reviews, production documents, and articles that have appeared about the actor. Footnotes abound. In addition Ms. Porter seems to have personally witnessed many of his performances.

As a record of his work and the public response to it, the book succeeds, and as mentioned, makes a great reference tool for those wishing to see more. But what may surprise some is that the emphasis is on the "list" of work, and the public reaction - not on the man, the process, or the craft.

I had personally hoped for more insight into the craft of this remarkably talented actor, and found the chronological organization of the book and lack of judicious editing less than ideal. But the author is speaking from an academic and publishing background rather than a theatrical one, and the emphasis is on the response to the work, rather than the work itself.

Despite her background as an author, Porter's unedited voice here leans more toward the fan than seasoned journalist, but she does not presume to be in her subject's head, which is a saving grace.

There's nothing wrong with enthusiasm; just don't expect a polished read or too much insight into Benedict Cumberbatch, his process, or a life in show business. In spite of this, BC In Transition is an admirable piece of research, and this book has a place on every true fan's bookshelf.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 "A Fascinating Study of A Talented Actor's Life Through His Roles" 17 septembre 2013

A performance biography is an interesting,in-depth,psychological tour of a particular actor's roles. What motivates Benedict Cumberbatch to take on such parts makes this book by Lynnette Porter a very fascinating study.
Motivation is not the primary driving trait as I have always secretly believed. "In Transition" helps to clear up what the difference is between just acting and "Acting". Passion is key. Preparation and study is paramount. IF anything,Cumberbatch's talent lies in his understanding of just how complex human beings are and that in order to bring a character to "full life" requires an equally nuanced performance.
The answer to whether he relies on "experience in real life"is: not likely. Each differing character has a unique voice;separate mannerisms and a never run of the mill interpretation. Each play, show, series, film, etc. gives this "stand alone' figure a birthing breath on Cumberbatch's terms. While a producer, writer or director has his or her own vision, the end result will always be the quality of the actor's understanding of the part he has to play.
I enjoy Cumberbatch's performances as much for the layers he shows outwardly as for what is held back, joyfully or darkly, simmering beneath his gestures, fluttering behind his eyes.
The book, while not a dissection of every individual part in the actor's performance biography (a genre I admit I enjoy over an autobiography),creates a well rounded picture of Benedict Cumberbatch's roles and interviews.
In the modern Sherlock Holmes,he is still adding depth while the superbly talented writers Moffat and Gatiss, astutely present time marching on instead of a static situation.
'In Transition" is not a spyglass into Benedict Cumberbatch's personal or private lives, but fans will enjoy it. And as far as "my' learning process went,I am more aware of what occurs during stage practice, preproduction, and the self preparation an actor must struggle through before he/she can step on stage and become a believeable character.
A well-done focus on Benedict Cumberbatch's career: past and present transitioning into the future.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A Wonderful Actor Heading for an Oscar 17 juillet 2013
Par Luci Bird - Publié sur Amazon.com
Attention all Cumber Collective and Fandom, you will truly enjoy reading about the fascinating Benedict Cumberbatch! This book highlights the many artistic ventures including stage and screen performances and beyond. This is a study in celebrity and media creation of an actor. The author, Lynnette Porter, has really done her homework! Just look at the research endnotes where there is 57 pages of references alone. Many of the performances and interviews I have seen of Benedict are discussed in detail. It is phenomenal to see the variations that has been achieved by Benedict with his characterizations. Most actors are typecast into a certain genre, but in this book you understand that this is not the case with Benedict.

My reaction upon finishing the book is that it is highly detailed and thoroughly explains his career transitions. Even though Lynnette has not personally interviewed the actor, this book still is well documented. My hope is that Lynnette will be given a future opportunity to write about Benedict again with first-hand knowledge. I fell it would have been beneficial to include photos from different performances to show the many "looks" that Ben has experienced. Besides he is fun to look at, as any fan will attest to!

It is interesting to see the scrutiny that an actor goes through in the public eye. More recently Benedict has learned from his experience dealing with the media. He has had his challenges and is learning to navigate through it all. Lynnette Porter discusses the growth of Benedict in this area, transitioning into an A-Lister. He does have an old world name and elegance, such as "the greats" like Laurence Olivier and Basil Rathbone, but with a 21st century hipness! Just as Lynnette Porter has written, Benedict is an actor in transition and he definitely is heading for an Oscar! And he will WIN!

Very fair and well written book that focuses mainly on Cumberbatch's career moves, which are very smart indeed. Highly recommended for not only fans of Cumberbatch, but anyone who might be interested in a career in film and/or theater.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 So Interesting! 1 octobre 2013
Par JC - Publié sur Amazon.com
This book had details about Cumberbatch's performances that are really interesting, on so many levels, to those of us who care about this actor and about acting as craft. As a pop culture fan, I have read a lot of performance biographies, and while many of them have interesting tidbits, this one is so well written and so respectful of the actor and his craft that I am finding myself reading it more than once. Fans of acting as well as fans of this particular actor are likely to get a lot of enjoyment and information from this performance bio.
