Présentation de l'éditeur

'This is suicide!' Manuel screamed frantically. So begins an amazing true story of a journey to Antarctica in a 27-foot sailing boat. After travelling through South America to Tierra del Fuego, the only continent David had never visited beckoned to him across treacherous waters. Ships booked for scientific expeditions wouldn't take him, and tourist cruises didn't appeal. Then he saw a little boat in the harbour, its name hand-painted in red on the hull: Berserk. Together with a 'crazy Viking' and a down-on-his-luck Argentinian, the author set sail to follow Shackleton's voyage with little idea of the tumultuous storms, mishaps and emergencies that loomed on the journey to the world's coldest and most inaccessible continent. He brilliantly recounts their experience of the huge waves, the bleak darkness and the delicate balance of personalities where a mutiny was always in the air.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 One of the best sailing adventure books I have ever read! 7 août 2010

I read every sailing adventure book that I can find and was thrilled to come across this one. I can't believe that it took me this long to find it! This is an amazing story of survival by people who seemed to be completely unprepared for the most dangerous conditions on Earth. The author has an incredible sense of humor and I found myself laughing out loud while reading about his death defying adventures and about spending weeks in a tiny boat with people he hardly knew.

This story differs from others that I have read because the authors usually try to impress us with their sailing skills, resourcefulness and smart decisions. In this case, the author knew basically nothing about sailing before agreeing to crew on a tiny boat owned by a 21 year old captain. If he had known what he would be getting himself into, he would never have been foolish enough to get in that boat and we would not have this literary jewel.

Because it was written by a sailing novice who often avoided using technical lingo, it is easy to understand even if you have never been on a sailboat. I have strongly recommended this book to both my sailing and non-sailing friends.

This is an incredible story; particularly interesting for anyone who has sailed salt water in a boat under 30 feet. "Berserk" is the first true sailing adventure I've read where the trip was not well (if not over) planned and the reader is not assailed with tedious sailing jargon and snobbery. Like Ted Turner, Mercy calls a rope a rope. Perhaps David Mercy's lack of sailing experience at the time was a saving grace... the guy may have thought it was always that rough! I highly recommend the book and I look forward to more from Captain Jarle & the author, as I've done a bit of Googling and see that they have been at it again... this time up North.

I originally found this story on Youtube. Called "Wild Vikings". This book is a true modern day adventure. And proves that God protects the stupid. Not that these guys are stupid they certainly are not. But you have to question their lack of experience and choice of crew and equipment. But you know. I have never done what David has done. And God bless him for his honesty and his storytelling. And after the armchair sailor reads this book. You must take the video challenge and watch the hours of excellent and fun video on youtube. Fair winds David! Very fast and fun read.

book is about an amazing story about 2 first time sailors and their 20 year old captain, sailing to Antarctic. Their boat was not prepared or supplied for such a trip, which did anger me that they didn't think out the trip and might have risked others in a potential rescue. I'm still having a hard time believing they survived hypothermia. The last word in the book brought a smile to my face and warmed my heart.

As far as sailing books go, this, I am sure, will become one of the classics.
Aside from being a very well written tale about an impossible, mad journey undertaken in a vessel made for swedish coastal waters, it is also a very funny, scary, sad story about a bunch of people that follow their dreams regardless of cost.
I salute the author - Well done Sir!
And hats off to these guys!
