About the author
Editor William H. Shank was cofounder of the American Canal Society and a leading expert on canals. He was editor of the American Canal Society newsletter for many years and compiled the best articles for this volume. He has authored his own books on canals, including "The Amazing Pennsylvania Canals" and "Towpaths to Tugboats: A History of Canal Engineering."
