This is just the type of book I need. I plan on moving in the next year or so and will be buying a larger property outside of the city. This will give me the chance to set-up a chicken coop and enjoy fresh eggs daily. This book provides me with the information I need to get started.

The author starts with their own experience in getting started with backyard poultry. Their personal experience is very valuable in gaining an understanding of things you may run across when getting started. Next is an explanation of what breeds are best for the backyard which I found to be important since I will be expanding my living space but will not be buying a farm.

Heritage Breeds which have been around for a very long time are discussed as a consideration in choosing your hens. The question of whether to have a rooster is not necessarily an easy question to answer. There are Regulations depending on where you live that may or may not allow you to keep a rooster. The author lists Pros and Cons for keeping a rooster - a valuable section to check out before purchasing a rooster.

Chicken sizes and anatomy provide a more in-depth understanding of a chicken which is valuable for those that have not had very much exposure to chickens.

The most interesting part of the book personally was the information provided on each type of chicken. The information for each chicken included: size, color, egg size and annual production and characteristics of each chicken. An in-depth explanation of each chicken is valuable in helping you to make your decision. There is a clearly shot picture of each type of chicken in the book. The pictures are extremely valuable in gaining additional knowledge on each chicken. They vary quite a bit in size and overall looks which gives you some opportunities to determine what chicken or mix of chickens you might be interested in.

The is a well organized and well written book. Just what I am looking for when I want to learn about something I have not studied much previously. Well done, and I recommend this book for anyone interested in learning about chickens.

I never thought I would see the day when city people wanted to raise chickens in their back yard. I grew up with them on the farm and while they are tasty I hated collecting eggs and if you are going to butcher them yourself good luck! This was a great book with extensive information on breeds and what you need to know as a beginner. Definitely read this book if you are even considering raising chickens.

If you are planning to start raising chicken in your own backyard, well then this book is exactly what you need to get started. The author share his own experience when he started. There is a detailed presentation of the chicken breeds you could raised. It's full of great pictures too. Choosing the right breed is the most important thing when starting raising chicken. I was amazed at how many choices you have and the differences between breeds and you need to select according to lifestyles and your needs. The author also answer a very common question: should I get a rooster? There is also a choice to make between raising regular sized chickens or bantams. I highly recommend this well presented and written book to anyone interested in backyard poultry.
