Quick summary:
-Great sound out of the box
-Very minimal sound leakage/bleeding
-Great job of blocking out external sounds
-Very comfortable
-Not too bulky
-Long cord connected on one side of headphones

-Ears can get slighly warm after exteneded period of time.

First, I just want to make a note that I'm one of those consumers who does thorough research on a product before I purchase it. And when it comes to anything audio or video related, I'm extra picky. With that being said, here's my review.

In searching for a set of headphones, my main focus was on of course sound quality but also on comfort, ipod compatibility/portability, and sound isolation/leakage, all at a reasonable price. These headphones definitely delivered in all those aspects. The sound quality is amazing. Though I've never owned a pair of closed, over the ear, headphones before, I can't compare these to others. But being what I consider an intermediate audiophile I can say that these do sound great, to me. From other reviews I read on headphones, a lot of them were mentioning a break in period for headphones to bring them to their full potential. I only had these for two days so far and they already sound great out of the box. So I look forward to seeing if the break in period enhances the sound quality further (I'll give an update on the results). The highs are clear and crisp, the mids are solid, and a good amount of bass is delivered. I listen to a variety of music so I made sure to test these headphones in each genre, and they did justice. They are well balanced overall without exceling in one area. So if you're looking for something heavy or light on bass, these aren't for you. The only slight con on the sound is that it does sound slightly muffled. But this is obviously going to be expected, to some extent, with closed headphones. That's with me being really critical though, having the "perfect" headphones in mind. That slight con is easily overlooked though.

Since I'm a full time student, I wanted headphones that didn't bother anyone in a library or study lab setting, but at the same time blocked external sounds in noiser environments. These did just that, blocking more so than bleeding. You pretty much have to turn the sound all the way up in order for someone else a few feet from you to hear clearly. At 1/2-2/3 volume on my ipod, very slight sounds were heard but definitely nothing that would be disruptive. Again that's if someone is within a few feet of you. The sound isolation is also great. At about the same volume of the leakage test, I had my wife talk to me to see if I could hear her. Though I could slightly hear her muffled voice, I couldn't understand what she was saying. In sacrificing my ears for a brief time, I turned the volume all the way up and had her talk to me again. Nothing! I saw her lips move but no sound. Usually with standard headphones, even if you turn the volume all the way up you can still hear external sounds. Even though I probably will never listen to music that loud it's nice to know that the ability is there.

With comfort being another characteristic I focused on, I wanted to make sure the closed headphones I bought could be worn for more than an hour at a time, though this won't always be the case. Other reviews for other closed headphones talked about them being too tight or hurting when people wore them. So I wanted to make sure that wasn't the case. These are not tight at all, but at the same time they do a good job of staying on my head. The ear pads are a soft velvet-like material, not leather or rubber, and they cover my whole ear. I'm assuming this is the obvious reason why my ears get slightly warm when I wear them. I have to shift the headphones slightly to the front to get my ears a breather from time to time, haha. It's not totally uncomfortable, but it is noticeable, for me at least. The inner strap is a piece of leather with a strip of nylon running through it. It actually stretches so it "auto-adjusts" to your head. The ear pads are somewhat loose also, allowing free rotational movement, to some degree. It kind of has that about-to-break-off feeling. But I'm assuming this is also intended as "auto-adjust" for people with varying head shapes.

Another thing I was looking for, that I didn't think about, was ipod/mp3 player compatibility. With some higher end headphones, I guess you need an amp to use them to their full potential, from what I read. Others suck up battery life. These avoid both of those worries, so far in regards to the battery aspect. I actually found these on another website that listed these under that specific category, then came to Amazon and found them here. These even come with a jack adapter to go from the standard 3.5mm (ipod, mp3 players, etc.) jack to the 6.35mm counterpart (home theater systems, DJ equipment, etc).

The overall matieral is a seemingly sturdy plastic, making the headphones very lighweight. The cord is close to, if not, 8 feet long from the tip of the jack to the headphone! I think that's long enough for anyone, haha. The overall size is acceptable and reasonable for these headphones. I actually thought they were going to be bulkier/bigger, which is a plus. They have a very sleek yet simple look to them so you don't have to worry about looking funny when you wear these, if that is a concern.

Overall, these headphones greatly, if not somewhat, exceed their value. I would definitely recommend these to any of you looking for headphones with the same criteria I had. You will not be disappointed, unless you get a defective set. In which case these have a two year warranty from the manufacturer. I know this was a long review but I think those that research products in a similiar manner will appreciate this. Thanks for hearing me out. I'll post an update sometime in the future on the consistency of the sound quality.

**** Update: Dec 14, 2013 ***** (I initially posted this in the comments section)
So after two years of having these headphones, I'm happy to say that they're still holding up great. Still no cons. Nothing has worn out or deteriorated. Sound quality is still great too! As for the sound break-in period I mentioned, I didn't notice an obvious improvement after the first week or two, if there even was one. But like I mentioned in my initial review, these headphones already sound great out of the box. So I wasn't worried about getting an improvement, if any, after the break-in period. If you're looking for headphones, I would still recommend these.

This is such an impressive little headphones I've tried. I use AKG K701 headphones at home (with amp) and I love its accurate and CLEAN sound with a large sound stage! I was looking for headphones that would sort of give similar sound color like my K701 for outdoor use. Not too expensive, not too bulky but something nice and simple. I also have a pair of Grado SR 60 which is truly a great headphones but it was a bit too open for outdoor use for me. I've heard so much nice things about Beyerdynamic DT 231 and found that they came out with a new model DT 235 in better colors! Some people might not like its design but in my opinion, it is well designed for practical reasons. VERY comfortable (most comfortable headphones I have ever tried), light weight, reasonable(?) noise blocking though you will still be hearing some outside noise. Sound is without a doubt, VERY impressive. I'd say overall DT 235 has VERY clean, accurate sound with none exaggerated bass response. In fact, this might not be the best choice for base lover but for me, it is just about right! Since this can has sweet clean sound, I found it is very suitable with classical music especially piano music! Sure it has smaller sound stage than my K701 but considering its small can size, it is quiet amazing! It has less "front row" sound compare to Grado SR 60 which I like it better for more like the first tier sounds?! DT 235 is certainly a great choice under $80 budget! Strongly recommended!

This review from an aspiring audiophile on a budget. I've had ear canal headphones from Shure, JVC, and Ultimate ears, but in general I feel i can't listen to ear canals for long periods of time. So i recently reverted to my old Sennheiser PX-100's, but they broke. I did some research and bought these guys a couple of days ago and they came promply (thanks Amazon prime student) in a simple, low waste, easy-to-open package.

On to the headphones themselves:

-Extremely comfortable. These say they are supra-aural, but really they surround my ears with comfortable velour pads. Strap on top keeps it in place nicely, with the plastic part not even contacting my head. Not too much pressure on my eardrums.
-Sound quality is comparable to my PX-100s, but a bit boomier in the lower end. Can definitely tell the difference between low bitrate and 320 kbps (CD quality) files. Noticed slight sibilance (hissing) on some lower bitrate tracks, maybe an amp would fix this? Good midrange detail, a little light on the treble. I plan on fuxin around with the EQ settings to see if that'll help
-Clean, classic look in white, dunno about black

-Look to be somewhat delicate. Shoulda come with a case of some kind, makes me miss how my px-100s folded up and fit into a compact plastic case ;(
-Cable is SOOO long. Seriously, way too long. I estimate it's somewhere near 9 ft (!?!). I need to find some way to shorten it other than wrapping it around my iphone, cause everytime i wanna use the screen theres like 4 feet of cable wrapped around it.
-Have to turn the volume up pretty high on most devices to get desired sound level. Detail seems to diminish a bit at lower volumes.
-These guys leak quite a bit of sound, enough to annoy others on an airplane or a bus methinks, though I haven't experimented with that yet
-Couldn't they have used a gold-plated connector? Im almost considering chopping this cable by a few feet and soldering my own radio shack one in there...

If that were a factory-installed option on this headphone, along with a case, I'd pay another 15 bucks for these bad boys, because in all seriousness they are a solid value in sound quality and comfort for the money. I will update if durability proves an issue, and if beyerdynamic will honor their 2 year warranty if (when) something happens. For now, I'm glad I purchased this headphone. Koss porta-pros are just way too weird lookin for my taste. Maybe the Sennheiser PX 100-II On Ear Miniheadphone (Black) was the smarter choice for portability, but I needed a change of pace and am content with my purchase.

Happy shopping

HASH(0x962cf1ec) étoiles sur 5 Fantastic sound for the price 31 janvier 2011

Purchased these because in-ear irritate my ears and they keep falling out but didn't want the full size 'cans'. This turned out to be a great alternative.

They sound fantastic for the price. Enough bass without being comical (sony, Dre Beats etc), decent mids and nice highs that don't push into the uncomfortable zone. (they never get sharp enough to become tiring). Do they sound like $500 Senns or ATs? No. Do they sound better than a $100 pair of in-ears? Yes.

Comfort and construction:
These are not built like a tank so be careful! Sturdy plastics with the wire built into the frame but they aren't very tough. (I wouldn't want to sit on these or even place them in a bag with lots of items) The cord itself is very long but also thick which means it shouldn't break down any time soon.

The ear cups are padded with a velvet/soft padding. I don't have an enormous head so they don't clamp down tight but don't fall off. They almost completely cover my ears and I can wear them for about 1-2 hours before I need a break. (Get a little warm etc) Overall very nice but not perfect.

Overall I love these bargain headphones. One day I will move up to some open cans but for the budget minded you can't go wrong with these.

HASH(0x962cf54c) étoiles sur 5 I love these little headphones 14 décembre 2009

At this price point, these might be my favorite headphones. Great sound, good comfort. I'm not sure why they don't get more attention than they do. I use them all the time, and have many other pairs to choose from. The only potential drawback is that they have a rather long cord, which does not bother me and is not a deal-breaker, but I feel like I have to say something in the nature of constructive criticism. Of course, if you are using them from your computer, that would be a plus. They have made a real beyerdynamic fan out of me.
