The Great Lee Andrews & The Hearts 16 août 2005
Par Peter J. Curry - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
I like all kinds of music, from classic country to the soulful be-bop of Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell and Dexter Gordon. But when it comes to "Deathbed Discs," I'd have to go with doo-wop, and this collection by the great Lee Andrews & the Hearts would be at the top of my list. Hardcore fans will probably miss some of their less well-known tunes like "Why Do I" and "I'm Sorry Pillow" (which are available elsewhere), but all of their major hits are here: "Try the Impossible," "Teardrops," "In My Lonely Room," "The Clock," "Long, Lonely Nights" and the group's beautiful remake of Gordon Jenkin's classic ballad, "Maybe You'll Be There." And what fantastic recordings they are!

I grew up in Lee Andrews' hometown of Philadelphia where his records always topped the charts and got tons of airplay. So I'm not sure how widely known these recordings are. But I am sure that Lee Andrews & The Hearts made some of the best music this country has ever produced.

There are many fine points in this music that deserve mention: like the spare, just right backing instrumentation...and the group's excellent choice of material. But the finest point is Lee Andrews' voice which, for style, smoothness and heart-felt believability, has often and rightly been compared to Nat King Cole's.

If you like doo-wop, you'll love this CD. If you're new to the genre, one listen to "Lee Andrews & The Hearts Greatest Hits" will make you a believer (see also the Rhino CD, "The Best of Doo-Wop Ballads," which contains eighteen killer recordings including "Teardrops" by Lee Andrews & The Hearts).

A Budget Volume From Collectables With Flaws 28 juillet 2007
Par George O'Leary - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
Lee Andrews & The Hearts may not have had all that many charted hit singles - just three in fact - but it's hard to find a significant 1950s retrospective CD without SOMETHING on it by this group. Known primarily for their tear-jerk ballads, that was evident in their first hit, Long Lonely Nights, which made it to # 11 R&B and # 45 Billboard Pop Top 100 in August 1957 on Chess1665 (after being picked up from the tiny Main Line 102 b/w the uptempo The Clock.

Later that year their second hit became their best when Tear Drops began its climb to # 4 R&B and # 20 Billboard Top 100 in January 1958 on Chess1675 b/w The Girl Around The Corner (not included here unfortunately). However, whether it was due to lack of material or a changing music scene, by mid-1958 they had moved to the tiny Casino Records where they recorded Try The Impossible (Casino 452). After United Artists picked it up and released it as United Artists 123, it went to # 33 Billboard Top 100 that summer, but for some reason known only to the record-buying/listening public, it made no impact whatsoever on the R&B charts. That B-side, Nobody's Home, is also omitted here.

They would never again crack ANY national chart, but even so this is a very underrated Doo Wop group which included, at various times, brothers Roy and Wendall Calhoun, Thomas "Butch" Curry, Ted Weems, Jimmy McAlister, and John Young.

The sound quality in this "budget" release, obviously transferred directly from vinyl, is scratchy at times but otherwise acceptable for any but the most diehard of audiophiles. However, if you want a comprehensive collection of their music with better overall sound quality go for the 1995 3-CD set also from Collectables titled Lee Andrews And The Hearts For Collectors Only.

Great "Collectables" CD! 8 mars 2009
Par Rick Komm - Publié sur Amazon.com

Well -- my CD just came today, and I played the entire album. I was praying that all 12 tracks would play straight through, so that I could give it the full 5-star rating. Well, my prayers have just been answered! There is some wavering in the sound (these recordings are something like 50 years old), but at least there are no breaks in the middle of the song. I believe I have picked a winner! And the record label (Collectables) matches perfectly how I feel about it!

It was actually XM Satellite Radio (DirecTV) that turned me on to Lee Andrews and the Hearts. Both '50s on 5 and '60s on 6 play music by this group on occasion, especially on Friday and Saturday nights. I was afraid that it was such an out-of-the-way group that I wouldn't be able to find them. How wrong I was! I found it right here, at a very reasonable price. All you aficionados of early doo-wop music -- it's well worth it! This album features the original recordings of these songs, and they come from the heart. What more could I ask?
