Book Description

Dr. Sylvia Mader, a well-known author in the field of biology, has written numerous biology textbooks for McGraw-Hill.

Biology is now a tightly knit text that covers the concepts and principles of biology from the structure and function of the cell to the organization of the biosphere. It draws upon the entire world of living things to bring out an evolutionary theme that is introduced from the start. The concept of evolution is necessary to understanding the unity and diversity of life and serves as a background for the study of ecological principles. Modern ecological problems, including the biodiversity crisis, are stressed throughout the text.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Excellent Biology Text! 10 décembre 2011

I really liked this book. It was readable but full of excellent information. Lots of pretty pictures broke up the text and kept me going, and there were plenty of well-done graphics to explain concepts that were a bit heady. This text has an emphasis on evolution as the cornerstone of Biology, which was very informative and helpful. In addition, the access code allowed me access to the study tools on the McGraw-Hill site, which I found very helpful. There is no need to purchase a study guide to go with this text, as all of the answers are included in the back. I think it is assumed that one will practice on the site rather than out of the text, though frankly I found the subject matter easy enough to absorb with good notes from my class, reading the chapter, and reviewing the information my instructor emphasized. The graphics were great to draw in order to help complicated ideas like cellular respiration really sink in and be understood. I highly recommend this text, and plan on keeping my copy for my own personal reference.

I am in the process of going back to university to change careers and I just started a biology class that is using this book. I am not originally a science major (used to social sciences) but this book is well written. It goes into detail, and uses scientific language and terms, but also tries to relate what you are reading to more everyday events. Tables in the book are useful as well. So far, so good!

Incomprehensibly organized and badly written. What more could you ask for in a textbook?
It veers manically between hazy generalizations and excessive detail. The glossary is filled with circular definitions--when it even has a definition. Material is scattered all over the book. Forget getting a big picture from this text unless you read the whole thing twice. Which I can't imagine anyone wanting to do.
Professors seem to love it. Probably because they already know the material, so all the references to undefined terms and concepts don't bother them.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Best University level textbook on any subject 12 mars 2014

This is the best college textbook I have read on any subject. I have recently accumulated a bunch of great textbooks on Physics, Chemistry and more specialized subjects. All of these are good. But Biology by Peter Raven is the best!. It is incredibly clear, extremely well-organized, and is just a joy to read. You can almost start any place in the book and understand what the authors are discussing. Every chapter opens up a whole world of biological thought and current biological science.

I really like how this book focuses on genetics and DNA. The pictures are wonderful and the explanations are really easy to understand. The chapter review questions tend to be a little all over the place but other than that, this book was good. I hate the Kindle edition though. I will never purchase another Kindle version of a textbook.
