5.0 étoiles sur 5 Finally, a primer that is right on the mark! (Biscuit finds a friend) 15 décembre 2005

My five year old daughter is just beginning to read and I have to tell you that my husband and I have been through a lot of books that claim they are `primers' but which aren't.

Either they use a huge vocabulary, or else they have too many words per page. In one case the entire book was written in the past tense. And while they might be great for a more experienced new reader, they are not good for true beginning/emergent readers; children with just a few weeks under their belts.

In any case, "Biscuit Finds a Friend" does not have any of these problems. You will find text that is simple and uncluttered, with not too many words per page. An example follows for you to judge for yourself:

The little duck is lost.

Woof! Woof!

We will bring the little duck back to the pond.

Woof! Woof!

Here, little duck.

Here is the pond.

Here is your mother and your father.

Quack!

Five Stars. A real book for beginning/emergent readers. The text is simple and just repetitive enough that children are encouraged. The artwork and story line appeal to children whether they are reading or not. Certainly my 3 year old son enjoys this book as well.

The Biscuit books have been the greatest motivator for my daughter who has been struggling with learning to read. The text is good for an emergent reader who is just beginning to learn sight words and phonics. The illustrations of Biscuit are delightful. These are wonderful books. I only wish I could get a series of them in paperback, quick, to keep her reading!

My 3 yr old son has simply fallen in love with Biscuit. We look forward to bedtime reading each night as we go through Biscuit's day which is full of adventures. The book is interactive in the way that it asks questions which gives the children a chance to be creative with their own adventure. We look forward to growing with Biscuit!
5.0 étoiles sur 5 Highly effective for beginning readers 28 avril 2010

My 5-year-old daughter loves the Biscuit series of books and though we got the series last year, she still takes them off the shelf and reads them by herself and even to me, without being asked! Now, that's a winning series to me as through these two years since I began to teach her reading skills, we've gone through many different readers by various publishers (many of which I've reviewed in terms of how helpful/effective they've been) and only certain series have appealed to her. Being a visual learner, colorful and interesting illustrations are important, but at the same time they should not detract from the reading itself.

The Biscuit series of books has Biscuit the Dog go on simple yet fun adventures. Here Biscuit finds an adorable little duckling friend. The vocabulary is simple with familiar sight words that will motivate a young child who is just beginning to read. It helps to build confidence in reading whilst engaging a young reader's interest through the colorful illustrations and charming story. This is a wonderful and appealing series for early readers.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Good early reader, don't let yourself get suckered into reading them aloud 3 août 2008

These books are very short, very repetitive, very predictable, very simple.

Great early readers.

They could also be great for toddlers and babies, who use that repetition to learn to speak, but they're written so simply that you'll be bored to tears after reading the book more than three times. And you can read these books several times in one sitting, they're that short.

Give them to your kid when they start reading and insist that THEY read the books - not you. Do not fall into the trap of reading them. Ever. If your kid is like the ones I know, they'll fall in love and you'll be trapped.
