Présentation de l'éditeur

“Toby Neal's stories have a relentless, charged energy that heats up every page.” Holly Robinson, author of Sleeping Tigers

The island of Maui is turquoise ocean, stunning vistas, and whalesong—but organized crime has a hidden hold, and Detective Lei Texeira tracks evil that hides behind a beautiful face.

When a nameless teenage girl dies in an apparent vehicular suicide, Lei can’t rest until she finds out what really happened. She blazes through all the wealth and poverty of Maui island society in her quest for justice, rousing a deadly foe—even as she faces the personal demons of commitment and revenge that threaten the only real love she’s ever known.

What does a cock fighting ring, an upscale art gallery and a cruise ship have to do with the murder of a mysterious foreign Jane Doe? Toby Neal shows you in her latest addition to the Lei Crime Series.

This time Detective Lei Texeira finds herself on Maui, and it's all about the women, from the victims to the cops to the perps. I was happy to see a medley of strong female characters and a reunion of faces from Blood Orchid and Torch Ginger.

Besides trying to solve the murder of a mysterious foreign Jane Doe, Lei comes face to face with a past that's keeping her from a healthy relationship with her boyfriend Stevens, who's looking to upgrade to husband status. Throw a few attempted murders into the mix and it's amazing that Lei can keep it together.

Another wonderful intersection of culture, crime and personal demons, you'll find yourself thinking you put the whole case together, only to be thrown at the very end in a twist you won't see coming.

I can't say enough about what Toby Neal has accomplished as an author (in ONE YEAR??!!) and what she has done to reveal Hawaii as a place of complexity and depth that despite its' beauty can be the setting for some of the darkest aspects of humanity.

Get ready to be taken for a ride from start to finish. You will be immensely entertained.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Not as great as the last two 30 novembre 2012

I've read all three books of the Lei Crime Series. I noticed everyone seemed to give it quite high marks. The story continues as it does from the first two. This is my review and although I know everyone else loved it, I didn't. I actually bought the book (most of my books are free, I'd say about 98%) because I enjoyed the last two. I did notice the price went from $3.99 (the price I bought it at) to $2.99.

It has a lot of excitement with sex trafficking, Lei's past, Lei's future and Keiki! I love Keiki! I just felt it was too much about Lei. I get it, it's Lei Crime Series so it's supposed to be about her. But it was too much. The whole book wrapped around if she would be with Stevens again. We already know that they are together again by the ending of Torch Ginger. But why did the author have to wrap the whole story around it if she was going to be with him again? We already went through that in the second book.

I actually wanted to read more about the crime than the main character herself. She's supposed to be a strong character with a bad past. A past she can't get past or is it she won't? It just seems after going through therapy and having a great boyfriend, she's still stuck in the past.

I was really unhappy about the ending. It was a bit selfish for her and I felt like she was running away from everything. Its what she always does and I guess it didn't disappoint at the end.

This is the third Lei Texeria crime novel I've read. While I liked the first two a lot, the second being my favorite. This novel I didn't care for much at all. I read mysteries for the mystery. The interpersonal relationships should just be side line. This was way too much about Lei and her problems not the mystery. This was compounded by Lei getting beat up at every turn. She didn't really solve this mystery. It solved itself. While Lei was a strong character with flaws in the last two books, in this book she was totally a self absorbed wuss. And as usual, I hate the choices she makes in the end. I hope the author doesn't continue, as so many of the mystery authors do today, to have the killers come after the detective and detective's family. It gets old. I really don't think that happens in real life much at all.

Not a bad police mystery, but this novel contained too much rather graphic sex. It's very distracting, and detracts from the story line.

A little bit Maui, a little bit island-style mystery. The little bit Maui features a ubiquitous Front St. Lahainatown art gallery and the ever-present cruise ships and eco-developers. The little bit island-style finds our heroine in Haiku, Paia and Wailuku. There are no serial killers in this one, but plenty of torture scenes, and a plot that features human trafficking and murder. The Maui PD detective continues to confront her personal demons - as always unsuccessfully. Still "my way or the highway", still thinking she's right while everyone else is wrong, still marching to the beat of her own taiko drum, never a team player, Lei, oddly, is being courted by the FBI. Someday, Lei may grow up but it doesn't happen in this chapter. Stay tuned.
