This back-up tracks CD is pretty cool. If you want to practice jamming with a blues band or if you want to play live for an audience without having to use a real band this is perfect. I play harp and have several back-up tracks CD's in my collection, and this is one of the better ones.
There are 10 different songs, each illustrating a different style of blues music. The blues styles included is a fast shuffle, light funk, slow 4/4, moderate shuffle, minor boogie, swing, and 12/8 slow blues, just to name a few. Each one is provided twice... the first time with "Doc" giving valuable spoken playing tips on how to best approach playing the piece, along with him playing a couple of cool riffs that exactly fit the style of the song. This is enough to get you started improvising on your own. Then you get a longer version of the same song without any harmonica so that you can jam to it yourself. The "play along" versions are long enough and are very well produced so that you could use them yourself in a professional setting.
These back-up tracks are suitable for all levels of players... from beginners to advanced. The booklet that comes with the set is not very helpful, in my opinion. It just provides some basic information on such subjects as rhythm, tone, melody, harmony, tongue blocking, note bending, positions and scales. Nothing in the booklet is specific to the back-up tracks themselves which I think would have been more helpful. Also, the key that each song is played in is not well documented... "Doc" tells you on the CD for 4 of them, the rest is for you to figure out! The negatives I just mentioned is not such a big deal really.... the important thing is music on the CD itself, which is excellent, in my opinion.
