5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great introduction to blues piano 17 janvier 2012

This is a nice introduction to playing the blues on the piano. You need to already know notes, basic chords, and have the fundamentals of piano technique because those things are not covered here. A couple of months of basic piano should be more than enough. You could probably get away with less if you were really determined.

Supplementing the Kindle edition with emailed PDFs of the music notation and MP3s for the 23 examples overcomes the big shortcoming of the Kindle as a delivery medium for instructional music books. The email system works well and I had the supplementary material within minutes of sending my email request.

Consider this a quick introduction to the blues. Everything is in the key of C and nothing in this book is too challenging. You will be exposed to some basic but usable ideas of things to do with the left hand and the right hand and how they are put together. You will get a taste of adding a solo. If you know enough to transpose the examples given into other keys, you will have at least several weeks worth of work to get the material here under your belt. Even if you just learn everything in the given key of C there is plenty here to keep you busy for awhile.

If you enjoy this, you will need to get additional books to really move on. If not, the things you learn will still make you a better musician.

I'm no good at writing in English, so I'm only going to say that I really liked this book.

It's well written, the exercices are very good. It's a very good introduction for someone trying to learn blues.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Easy to use 23 mars 2012

This is a very nice basic book on the blues. It gets you started with some simple right and left hand rhythms. I especially like the audio and PDF files that you download along with the book. The book explains the theory, you can then print out the PDF to practice with, listen to the audio track to see how you're doing, and play along with the rhythm track to get up to speed and stay in tempo. It's a wonderful combination for beginning blues players.

Everything the other reviewers said here is true for me as well. The exercises are great for beginners; the customer support is excellent - within minutes after buying the book and emailing the author as instructed, the extra materials - MP3s and PDFs of the exercises written in musical notation - were provided. Because some Kindle books are still problematic with tiny graphics that cannot be enlarged sufficiently so as to be of any use, the PDFs eliminate eyestrain. This is a huge convenience (just today I had to refund another Kindle music how-to book because its tiny graphics were impossible to enlarge, rendering the book useless to me).

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Extremely useful, and cheap! 3 juin 2013

If there is a better tutor of contemporary keyboard styles than Mark Harrison, then I have yet to come across him or her. In Mark's customary style, this is logically laid out. It starts with basic patterns that can be added to as the student progresses. It does not 'blind with science' but progresses gradually through gentle steps. It will not turn the reader into a hot shot blues pianist but it would equip him or her with enough of the basics to wing it in the average bar band.

Only one request, although I have this in Kindle form, there are times when a book and CD suit me and I would be prepared to pay more for that.
