Présentation de l'éditeur

Clocks and galaxies and streetlights; urns and deadbolts and petroglyphs; sweating lemonade; contrails; the spider strings of memory; rocky winter ground, the great blue heron with its neck tucked up under it like a wish, and the vanishing stars: Heather Kamins' inaugural chapbook of poetry reveals a deep curiosity and insight into the repressed and irrepressible energies of our world.

Reviews

In “Insomnia,” the poet continues that sense of wonder. Instead of filling the poem with frustration and difficulty (as so many sleepless nights feel), she talks about those delightful sounds that one only hears in the dark: “ceaseless polyphony” or the breathing of a lover. I was delighted with the sense of awe that rose through lines like this one: “wild neurons / weaving the spider strings of memory.” In the end, the speaker asks: “How can I sleep / in a world so full of such things?” The poet makes me wonder the same thing and perhaps the next time I’m lost at 2 am, wakeful and unhappy, I’ll stroll through the dark and remember to look around me with awe instead of dismay.
— Christine Klocek-Lim, “Three Poetry Reviews for National Poetry Month,” November Sky Poetry, 28 April 2012.

"There is much to ponder in this collection. The recurring scientific imagery is used to make observations about our relationships to each other, the natural world and the universe as a whole. These themes are poetic staples, but that doesn’t mean there is nothing new to say about them. In particular, the scientific theme helps dissolve the artificial divide between science and art."
— Jason Jawando, “Review: ‘Blueshifting’ by Heather Kamins,” Neon: A Literary Magazine, March 2012.

"One twist in the path, which maybe defies scientific analysis even more than love, is humour. Kamins keeps the all-powerful governing metaphor at bay with a gentle sense of humour and genuine wit. Eggcorns, for example, is a funny poem of malapropisms. And Devolution inverts our expectations by sentimentalizing garbage and smog and expressing indignation at the threat of an encroaching nature. And my favourite of the collection — Headspace — lulls us into a saccharine state of mind, sitting next to grandmother, perhaps on a farm, learning how to make jams or preserves the old-fashioned way, until we discover that this is a case of ‘borrowed nostalgia’ and our narrator is, in fact, in a classroom making it all up... projecting the good old days when poetry was a rustic pleasure passed on to us by our grandparents. Maybe this is Kamins poking gentle fun at the whole debate. And with beautifully crafted poems in a tight, cohesive collection like this, we’ll grant her that indulgence."
— David Allan Barker, “Blueshifting, a poetry chapbook by Heather Kamins,” nouspique, 31 January 2012.

"These poems, these concepts are aimed at coming towards the reader, bringing things closer, connecting sandwiches and lightwaves and grocery lists... I’m adding Heather Kamins to my list of poets to keep an eye on."
— Marissa Lingen, “Blueshifting, by Heather Kamins,” Barnstorming on an Invisible Segway, 1 January 2012.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Solid Collection of Poems, but Nothing Special 5 juin 2012

I got this as an Early Reviewer, and I was very excited to delve into the book. I haven't read a lot of poetry in recent years, and this seemed like just the book to hit all the right buttons for me: touches of science fiction, fantasy, and just general all around geekiness.

While Kamins manages to find all these buttons and she presses them readily, I was a bit disappointed with the collection overall. I kept waiting for one of the poems to really strike me, but none of them really left a lasting impression on me.

If you're an avid reader of poetry, and you're just looking for something to pass the time, read this. It really is a solid little collection, and Kamin's clearly very talented. If you're looking for inspiring poetry, however, find something else.

I received Blueshifting as an e-book. One of the first books to read on my Nook. This book of poetry contained such beautiful word-pictures. Ms. Kamins writes of nature with a lovely rhythm. In "Eggcorns" (acorns) she uses words such as "bare witness" and "I'm scarred half to death" to make you stop and think about her meaning. "Devolution" was one of my favorites, talking about Nature reversing the evolution of "progress". I would definitely recommend this to readers who don't necessarily read poetry as well as the poetry lovers amongst us.

Poetry, by a drunkard's slurrish definition, is the art of capturing a fistful of nothingness for a half of a half a heartbeat and deftly describing the sensation of that ephemeral temporary gift slipping away. Heather Kamins neat little chapbook of sixteen poems aptly lives up to that somewhat demented literary definition.

Her title poem, Blueshifting, hurls fistfuls of memorable imagery like wonderful hand grenades stuffed with bridal bouquets - aimed directly at the reader's eye. The poet's words splash out joyfully and catch at your imagination like a young child playing tag with a daydream of running laughter.

What I am trying to say is these are very colorful poems. Kamins pulls out a Crayola kaleidoscope of every hue and tint of the rainbow, writing with bold and memorably visual passages of imagery that softly brand themselves upon the reader's collective imagination.

There is a real play and a sense of fun in each of these poems - and yet, in spite of that innate playfulness there is likewise a fine jeweler's craftsmanship inherent in each separate piece. As you turn the pages and the words roll past you can feel the click and the whir of the universe winding down. Each poem is woven with the webwork and dreams of historians and horologists alike. One can feel the sands of time slipping through each line of poetry in this careful little collection.

I recommend that the reader should approach this collection in the way that a man who has crawled for twenty days upon the desert might approach an oasis. Swallow it in a gulp. Then pause, breathe and reflect. Sip each poem again, carefully savoring each refreshing mouthful.

Yours in storytelling,
Steve Vernon
