The best Dylan songbook I've found. An excellent value, and it might even make you a better guitar player too... 21 septembre 2010
Par Robert Santos - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
For the money, this is an excellent book. First, it has 63 songs, which is more than most songbooks. It has all the classics you'd expect, plus more obscure songs that are great to have as well. It also includes some recent songs from "Time Out of Mind" and "Love and Theft."

Second, all the songs are written in the correct key (at least all the songs I've played). Most other books will transpose songs into different keys, with the idea that it's easier to utilize open chords as opposed to more complicated barre chords. However, this book tells you exactly where to put the capo, so by doing that, you can play songs in their original keys, plus still not have to use many barre chords. That means you can actually play along with many of the original recordings, something I've done plenty of, and it ends up sounding really good. It's also a terrific way to practice the songs.

Third, this is not an "easy" songbook with watered-down chords (I realize that some may not see this as a positive). While I wouldn't call it difficult, the book uses many slash chords (ie C/G), plus a few diminished, ninth, and suspended chords here and there, along with the usual assortment of open chords. Please don't be intimidated by this... I actually found it a useful and fun way to learn new chords. I found my chord "vocabulary" quickly widened as a result of this book. Though not necessarily for beginners, it's definitely an easy book for beginner/intermediate players to use. They also include chords for whole songs, whereas many books will only diagram portions of songs, leaving it to you to figure out the rest, which I always find frustrating. Though chord patterns will obviously repeat in any given song, this book helps you know exactly where the chord changes should be for the entirety of a song.

My one complaint, and the reason this is "only" a four star review instead of a five star one, is how they present the chord diagrams. For a given song, all the chord names are right there above the lyrics. However, if you don't know how to play a particular chord, you have to refer to the pull-out page in the back that has all the chords used in the book. Because of the large number of chords, this makes finding a particular chord a more involved task than I think it should be. Frankly, I don't see why they couldn't have just printed the chord diagrams at the beginning of each song like most other songbooks do. Though seemingly a minor inconvenience, it's a bit annoying to have to constantly refer to the back of the book to find a chord.

Overall, because of its price, large number of songs, and general accuracy, I'd say this is the best Dylan songbook I've found, and I've played many...

If you're looking to play some popular Dylan songs, this is the book for you.

Pros:
- It's small (which can be good or bad) and portable.
- Best of all, though, is how the songs are designed. For beginning and intermediate guitar players, it's really nice have each chord change right above the lyrics. This gives you a good feel about when to change while singing.

Cons:
- It's probably not worth full price. $[...] seems a little pricey. However, just don't pay full price. Either buy it on [...] or use some sort of bookstore discount.
- The print is pretty small. However, it is a "little" black book so you'd have to expect that.
- No chord charts above each song. Only one big fold out chart at the end of the book.
(Kindle/iPad review) Would be absolutely fantastic, BUT... 10 août 2015

Okay, so I have been spoiled by The Beatles Complete Chord Songbook. It is basically the same idea, except it has all their songs (!) while this only has 60. Okay, that's life. He's written about 10,000 songs. Fair enough.

THE BIG PROBLEM is that these songs span multiple pages. I am looking at the Kindle version. I don't have time to stop strumming and tap to flip the page. And if you rotate it sideways (iPad), it doesn't display multiple pages at once.

In the Beatles Complete Chord Songbook, it displays chord symbols. More importantly, if you turn your iPad sideways, it will show you two pages at once--hey, just like how the real book was intended!

I have used the paper and Kindle (iPad) versions of The Beatles Complete Chord Songbook, and if the paper version was just spiral bound, both would be perfect.

This book would be great too, but... one page at a time? Come on.

Even the iPad version of The Beatles book has issues where sometimes it will only display one page at a time. Man. These could both be so fantastic.

This book is a must have if you are into Dylan. Here it is the lyrics and chord changes above the words where the chord change must happen. The chord diagrams are on the first page only. You know most Dylan songs are noted for many verses and are long. If you listen to Dylan especially Live concerts, it is sometimes very hard to understand the words and that is why I say it is a great to have book. I use my Kindle alot to hear and view the old concerts. I like early Dylan acoustic and electric the best and older audio technology makes it hard to understand the words so I follow along with my book now. They also have other singers in The Little Black Songbook series. Since I like this one so much i may get leonard Cohen next. These books are small enough to fit into a medium size purse, easy to carry. I purchased this book on Amazon.com using my Amazon Prime account with one click purchase and 2 day free shipping. You can not beat Amazon! get this book. Gloria

I own both this edition and the Tom Waits edition. Both are very precise in regards to the chords and their placement. From what I can tell, the authors present the chords that most closely represent those used in the actual recording of the song, including capo placement. So it won't always be "easy" to play a given song, but it will be accurate. Another reviewer also wrote that the chord diagrams are in a pull out sheet in the back; the publisher must have updated it because mine has the appropriate chord diagrams on the top of each title page.

My only gripe about these books is that they are so hard to keep open, which is pretty important if you're trying to read and play along. Get some paperweights or be ready to seriously damage the binding by bending it.
