Definitely Worth the Money! 5 mai 2013

I am so thrilled that this music has been released in a single book! Buying each individual song at $5 a piece didn't seem reasonable to me. If you're a fan of the music on the show, this book is definitely worth the money. With all of that said, I'm sad to say that the book is not perfect.

On the plus side: It is almost an exact replica of what you hear on the BOMBSHELL recording. All of the songs are vocal line with piano accompaniment with the exception of "Never Give All the Heart," in which the melody is doubled in the piano part for most of the song. All of the songs include the full dance breaks and most of the songs include cues for the chorus/back up singers.

On the negative side: The following songs do NOT have the cues for the chorus: "20th Century Fox Mambo," "Cut, Print... Moving On," and "Let's Start Tomorrow Tonight." There are a few chorus lines missing from "Public Relations," but otherwise the song is complete. A few of the songs have minor omissions of a few measures here and there, mostly percussive interludes the probably won't be noticed. Another small detail: "Our Little Secret" is a solo version for JFK, Marilyn's minor interjections/harmonies are not written out.

Another minor detail that bothers me is that the labeling of who sings what is inconsistent. Sometimes characters are listed by their Smash name (Ivy, Karen, etc.), sometimes they're listed by their Bombshell name (Marilyn, Joe, etc.), and the line in "Never Met a Wolf..." sung by Nick Jonas is listed as "Nick Jonas," and not by the name of his character. Random at best, but it is something that most people probably wouldn't notice or care about.

Overall I am very pleased with this purchase and can't wait to start singing through the book with my friends. The music is definitely intended for a skilled pianist; some of it is extremely fast ("Don't Say Yes Until I Finish Talking") and intricate ("Let's Be Bad"), so if you're hoping for something light and easy this is not the book for you.

Note-for-note transcriptions, a true score! 26 juin 2013

I will confess, I love everything about "Smash", that is, except NBC's decision to cancel it. It is through this music that I will be able to share this wonderful experience with those who never got bitten by the bug the way I did. As a musician, it was something I just had to have in my library. And believe me, this is a musician's score, with rich chord voicings and soaring melodies matched beautifully with lyrics that explore every intricate rhyming possibility. This all should come as no surprise since "Bombshell" was written by the guys who brought you "Hairspray".

A word to the wise, however, if you don't like playing sharps, this score will present a challenge to you, but I assure you, it will be a welcome one. In a perfect world, one day "Bombshell" would make it to Broadway, though that seems doubtful at this point. Make no mistake, this is a Broadway score on a par with the best that Broadway has to offer and all for the price of the book itself.

Bombshell Score - a SMASH!! 16 juin 2013

I rec'd the score/sheet music (book format) and was so excited that it was NOT "easy piano," but some of the songs I had to definitely practice a couple of times. It was exactly perfect for me as an accompanist and a vocalist! Thanks so much for extending my love of SMASH via the musical score. Linda

A little difficult to play, but love the songs! Certainly for a professional pianist. Awesome collection of all the songs from the amazing SMASH!

Great music and a bargain, too!... 3 octobre 2014

Here are all the songs from BOMBSHELL, the show-within-a-show about the life of Marilyn Monroe from SMASH, the recently departed NBC program. Since the network show is no longer being broadcast, BOMBSHELL is thus far a "bookless musical" or, on CD, a concept album with top-notch songs, dramatically powerful and entertaining in their musical stylings, lyrical, on-point and witty in their lyrics. This softbound volume is a good solid production, easy to read, with more than adequate scoring and instructions for piano and voice (but not part singing or other instruments), and since the songs play out at different styles and tempi (and often shift same within a song), at the price is well worth having. Considering that several of these songs are already popular in "pub sing" mode and are gaining currency as cabaret fare, an enterprising piano player-for-hire would be well advised to invest in this music to add to his/her portfolio.

The CD of BOMBSHELL (Bombshell: The New Marilyn Musical from Smash) is also a good investment, not just for its considerable entertainment value but as a way to understand its sound with full orchestration, which has been intelligently reduced for piano in this volume (though with songs of this speed and complexity, piano-playing is not easy). The only thing I object to in this score is that sometimes the singers indicated are the characters singing (JFK; Marilyn); at other times the fictional entertainers playing those roles (Ivy; Tom). It's not a huge hitch but I don't know why it wasn't made more uniform for this bound volume. I know as well that the songwriters, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, are slowly coming into the prominence they deserve and it might not be too long before Shaiman and Wittman are thought of in the same Broadway pantheon as Lerner and Loewe, Kander and Ebb and Stephen Sondheim. There are many good reasons to buy the BOMBSHELL sheet music, no small one being to snag it before the price goes up as future editions are likely to do. Let it be your Star!
