Présentation de l'éditeur

Bouts of Mania describes the glorious era when Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, and George Foreman fought each other in every possible combination, on nearly every possible continent. In their most memorable bouts from 1971 to 1975, the three men created athletic set pieces that continue to resonate: the Fight of the Century, Down Goes Frazier!, the Rumble in the Jungle, and the Thrilla in Manila. Their fights for the heavyweight belt (when that title still meant something) made for a roiling and convulsive tournament, all the more striking against a backdrop of national dysfunction. In fact, their heroic efforts—global spectacles that offered brief glimpses of clarity and confidence—may have been the only thing that made sense back home during the social and political morass of the 1970s.

In Bouts of Mania, Richard Hoffer, a longtime writer for Sports Illustrated, evokes all the hopes and hoopla, the hype and hysteria of boxing’s last and best “golden age.”

As a lifetime boxing fan… I believe this is a book for the ages. A glorious five year period encompassing 1971-1975… during which Muhammad Ali… Smokin’ Joe Frazier… and George Foreman… fought each other five times. The Heavyweight division hasn’t been the same since… nor has America… and the author does a “knockout” of a job explaining why.

I have a very large boxing library and so I have read multiple biographies on the boxers that this story is built around. One of the things that makes this compilation so effective is that it concurrently follows each individual in depth… prior… to the big fights… during the big fights… and after the big fights. In previous individual biographies… rightfully so… those books only gave real in depth insight to the title character. Here the reader gets to consistently see and feel the growth or decline of each fighter as a byproduct of the multi-faceted domino effect each fight leaves in its wake.

Avid boxing fans will also be pleased with all the detail on the corner men… trainers… sparring partners… promoters… including the despicable Don King. One interesting thing I learned from this book was the early influence that Sonny Liston had on George Foreman. The author’s writing style is exquisite… and his story telling during some of the big fights like “The Fight Of The Century”… and “The Thrilla In Manila””… is so wrought with precise… delicate… but… razor sharp… blow by blow… descriptions… that you feel like you’re actually there... at… or in some cases… in the fight. In the case of the Ali-Frazier battles… “almost” to the death… you will almost assuredly forget where you are… and your sense of time… will have left you. These aforementioned sequences… to me represent some of the finest boxing writing… I’ve had the pleasure to read.

The summarizations of the life styles and mindset of these three former champions … up through the present time… is at once… sad… happy… and surprising… when the final bell has been rung. This is a book worthy of a championship!

good but not a great read. a bit too enthralled with Ali the showman and Don King the extortionist. Best synthesis is on Forman and the way he put his boxing life in a larger context. Frazier's lethality surfaces a s well as the said story of Ali's verbal mistreatment

As a long time boxing fan and one who watched all the fights through the 70's I really liked reading this book. But to some degree I had hoped for a little more. It does not quite rise to the level of what I consider the best book I have read on boxing and the fights of this time period "Ghost's of Manila". What bugs me about the book as I first picked it up, is the typical cover (it seems). Ali is punching Frazier on the front, Frazier is down from Foreman's punches on the back. Again sadly, Joe Frazier who produced the highest quality masterpiece of the three fighters in this time period with his epic victory over Ali in the ultimate boxing match in heavyweight history (the Fight of the Century), seems not to get the respect he is due. Why do we never see a cover with Ali on his back from the Frazier left hook?? The book also seems at times to mix up some fighters like Quarry and Bonevena.. A little better research could have been done. Still if your a boxing fan the 70's showcased a depth of talent unlike any 10 year period in heavyweight boxing history in Frazier, Ali, Foreman (and later Holmes) who are in most experts top ten heavyweight champions list. Not to mention Norton and Quarry who would have been champions had they lived in different eras and not had to fight these guys. It's a good read for any boxing fan.

For someone who grew up in the heyday of heavyweight boxing, this book brings back many fond and exciting memories. Concentrating on the central three heavies of this era, Ali, Frazier, and Foreman, the author, Richard Hoffer, details how their mutual fights/bouts defined them in boxing history, and how their bouts contributed to their inevitable decline. He begins in and around the year 1970 and takes the reader through the Fight of the Century, the Frazier - Foreman shocker in Jamaica, the second Ali-Frazier fight, the Rumble in the Jungle, and Ali-Frazier 3 in Manila. Hoffer then devotes the last several chapters to the post-retirement years, the ali-Frazier feud, and the epilogue.

This is a well-written book, and boxing fans will truly enjoy the memories of a time when the heavyweight championship of the world meant something special.
