Présentation de l'éditeur

She’s reaching for a breakaway pass.

Dana Campbell has spent the past seven years in self-imposed isolation for a crime she didn’t commit. The danger is well in the past, but her panic attacks make it impossible to have a normal, healthy relationship with a man. Even her counselor has given up on her. She has to find someone she trusts to help her fight through the panic, or her seven-year ordeal will become a lifetime sentence. There’s only one man she feels safe enough to ask.

He got caught with his head down.

As the captain of the NHL’s once elite but now fading Portland Storm, Eric Zellinger knows a thing or two about keeping his focus on the job. Questions are flying about his ability to lead the team back to the playoffs. If they don’t make it, he might be shipped out of town. It’s the worst time possible for his best friend’s kid sister to divide his focus. How can he give her what she needs without jeopardizing both the Storm’s playoff hopes and his future with the team?

It’s her only chance, but it’s his last shot.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 a beautiful and unexpected love story (and a hot hockey player!) 29 décembre 2013
Par Catherine Llewella - Publié sur
Format:Format Kindle
I received a copy of Breakaway in return for an honest review.

Dana is tired of being a prisoner to her fear and her panic attacks and asks the one man that she trusts to help her move past it. The man? Her brother's best friend, Eric. Eric has been a part of her extended family for as long as either as they can remember, but will he be able to put aside his feelings for his best friend's kid sister and be able to help her.

I absolutely LOVED this book. I love books that feature relationships between a character and a sibling's best friend anyways but to add a hot hockey player to the mix is just like adding frosting to my cupcake!! There was enough hockey jargon that a hockey fan might not be able to follow along completely at times, but to this hockey fan it was perfect!

I admire Dana and her strength and resolve to get to the other side of her personal hell. I love Eric and how we also got his side of the story as it was going on. There's nothing like being able to get inside both of the character's heads to know who each is feeling, unbeknownst to the other. Eric is just a great guy, he's a good friend with feelings that run deep whether they are protective feelings towards a girl that he's known forever or his loyalty to his best friend or to his teammates as they work together towards a playoff run at the end of their season.

I also especially love that while Breakaway is the first book in the Portland Storm series, this did not end with a cliffhanger. I am looking forward to more books coming down the pipe about some of the other Storm players.

I have not had the pleasure of reading anything else by Catherine Gayle before Breakaway but I look forward to reading more of her in the future.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A beautiful book 15 décembre 2013

Breakaway is a tale of love unexpected. Dana is in need of someone to help her overcome her tragic past. The only man she trusts enough is a rough and tumble hockey player who has been a part of her family forever. But he secretly has loved her always, and finally gets a chance to show her by being exactly what she needs, while taking nothing for himself. It's a story of overcoming all the odds, and winning the biggest game in love. Beautifully written, gut-wrenching in parts, and soft, sweet and perfect in others. I LOVE this book.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A very good book on a difficult subject 25 avril 2014

I will say that if I'd know the premise of this story, I wouldn't have bought the book. I'm going to say it hear so that others can make the choice for themselves. Not everyone wants to read about such a sensitive subject. Having said that I really did enjoy the book and have downloaded the next one in the series already.

The h was gang raped when she was in her late teens and since then has not been able to let anyone touch her. She's had years of counselling and therapy but can't move past the incident. She wants a relationship and children and her therapist suggests that she choose someone she trusts to initiate her to sex. She chooses her brother's best friend who is the Captain of a hockey team. The H has always had a thing for the h but she doesn't know it and he never acted on it because initially she was too young. It's a very difficult thing for both of them to go through but the H finally agrees to help her and she moves to be with him for a few months before she has to go back to work.

I adored the H. He must be one of my favourite Hs ever. My heart broke for the h too after everything that she'd been through. Although it isn't an easy subject, this is a love story and I do recommend it.

Catherine Gayle is amazing!! Breakaway is not like any of her other books. It's a contemporary hockey romance, and it's written in first person instead of third. Although it is very different than her other books it blew me away!! I fell in love with Dana and Eric from the very first page! Dana has gone through so much over the past 7 years and she just wants to move forward and she knows Eric is the one that is going to help her get there! They go through so much together that I laughed and cried with them! Catherine Gayle made me as the reader feel as if I was there with them! I can't wait so see what happens with the rest of the hockey players!! A must read!!! Once you start you won't be able to set it down!!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A story of patience, love and friendship 6 août 2014

4.5 Stars

*The heroine in this book was raped eight years prior and is still recovering. She suffers from panic attacks, bad dreams, and can't stand to be touched by men in any way. Because of the sensitive nature of this book, I felt a warning was appropriate as I would never want someone to pick this book up and be blindsided by the issues this woman faces.

This isn't a book I would have typically picked because I'm not a hockey fan and I tend to steer clear of hockey romances because to be honest I don't understand the game and sometimes there are so many references I just don't get. However, I'm going to Author's After Dark this week in Charlotte, North Carolina and attending a get together hosted by sports romance writers and Catherine Gayle is one of them so I chose to read this book by her. I am so very glad I did, Breakaway is an amazing story of a woman's journey to take back the life that was brutally taken from her eight years ago, but to do so she needs the help of her big brother's best friend. This wasn't always an easy story to read but it was well written and I feel done with great care for the subject matter.

There's so much I want to say about Dana Campbell but first and foremost is how strong she is even though she doesn't think she is. Being raped took from her everything that she loved and after years of therapy she's gotten to a point where she doesn't feel she'll get any better unless she does something pretty drastic. With encouragement from her therapist, she decides to enlist the help of her brother's best friend and her friend, Eric Zellinger. Eric is quite shocked by what Dana wants from him but in the end he agrees to help her because he has loved her for so long and will do anything to help her.

It's very hard to review this book without spoilers but Dana and Eric embark on a close friendship that along the way helps her begin to trust him and to allow him to touch her. They take very teeny tiny baby steps and even then sometimes it's too much. Eric was such a great guy and this patience was remarkable. It was evident early on how much he loved Dana but he was so afraid of moving too fast or hurting her that most of the time he followed her lead. I loved watching Dana gain back her confidence and learn to trust not only Eric but some of his teammates as well. I also enjoyed the friendships she built with the player's wives, something I don't think she'd allowed herself since the incident that stole her life.

Breakaway is an emotional story of one woman's journey but it is also a story of patience, love and friendship. Catherine Gayle has hooked me into this series with this book; the characters will have you cheering, the plot is full and entertaining, and the love story knows no bounds. It really is quite a remarkable story.
