Présentation de l'éditeur

She’s reaching for a breakaway pass.

Dana Campbell has spent the past seven years in self-imposed isolation for a crime she didn’t commit. The danger is well in the past, but her panic attacks make it impossible to have a normal, healthy relationship with a man. Even her counselor has given up on her. She has to find someone she trusts to help her fight through the panic, or her seven-year ordeal will become a lifetime sentence. There’s only one man she feels safe enough to ask.

He got caught with his head down.

As the captain of the NHL’s once elite but now fading Portland Storm, Eric Zellinger knows a thing or two about keeping his focus on the job. Questions are flying about his ability to lead the team back to the playoffs. If they don’t make it, he might be shipped out of town. It’s the worst time possible for his best friend’s kid sister to divide his focus. How can he give her what she needs without jeopardizing both the Storm’s playoff hopes and his future with the team?

It’s her only chance, but it’s his last shot.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 a beautiful and unexpected love story (and a hot hockey player!) 29 décembre 2013
Par Catherine Llewella - Publié sur
Format:Format Kindle
I received a copy of Breakaway in return for an honest review.

Dana is tired of being a prisoner to her fear and her panic attacks and asks the one man that she trusts to help her move past it. The man? Her brother's best friend, Eric. Eric has been a part of her extended family for as long as either as they can remember, but will he be able to put aside his feelings for his best friend's kid sister and be able to help her.

I absolutely LOVED this book. I love books that feature relationships between a character and a sibling's best friend anyways but to add a hot hockey player to the mix is just like adding frosting to my cupcake!! There was enough hockey jargon that a hockey fan might not be able to follow along completely at times, but to this hockey fan it was perfect!

I admire Dana and her strength and resolve to get to the other side of her personal hell. I love Eric and how we also got his side of the story as it was going on. There's nothing like being able to get inside both of the character's heads to know who each is feeling, unbeknownst to the other. Eric is just a great guy, he's a good friend with feelings that run deep whether they are protective feelings towards a girl that he's known forever or his loyalty to his best friend or to his teammates as they work together towards a playoff run at the end of their season.

I also especially love that while Breakaway is the first book in the Portland Storm series, this did not end with a cliffhanger. I am looking forward to more books coming down the pipe about some of the other Storm players.

I have not had the pleasure of reading anything else by Catherine Gayle before Breakaway but I look forward to reading more of her in the future.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A very good book on a difficult subject 25 avril 2014

I will say that if I'd know the premise of this story, I wouldn't have bought the book. I'm going to say it hear so that others can make the choice for themselves. Not everyone wants to read about such a sensitive subject. Having said that I really did enjoy the book and have downloaded the next one in the series already.

The h was gang raped when she was in her late teens and since then has not been able to let anyone touch her. She's had years of counselling and therapy but can't move past the incident. She wants a relationship and children and her therapist suggests that she choose someone she trusts to initiate her to sex. She chooses her brother's best friend who is the Captain of a hockey team. The H has always had a thing for the h but she doesn't know it and he never acted on it because initially she was too young. It's a very difficult thing for both of them to go through but the H finally agrees to help her and she moves to be with him for a few months before she has to go back to work.

I adored the H. He must be one of my favourite Hs ever. My heart broke for the h too after everything that she'd been through. Although it isn't an easy subject, this is a love story and I do recommend it.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A beautiful book 15 décembre 2013

Breakaway is a tale of love unexpected. Dana is in need of someone to help her overcome her tragic past. The only man she trusts enough is a rough and tumble hockey player who has been a part of her family forever. But he secretly has loved her always, and finally gets a chance to show her by being exactly what she needs, while taking nothing for himself. It's a story of overcoming all the odds, and winning the biggest game in love. Beautifully written, gut-wrenching in parts, and soft, sweet and perfect in others. I LOVE this book.

I absolutely LOVED "Breakaway." Hasn't been a book in quite a while that moved me the way this one did. If all of Catherine Gayle's books are like this one, I'm all in.

Smiles, laughs, tears, frustration, anxiety, fear... Gayle knows just how to write them. Love the Dana's personal growth in this story and her bro's bff who despite the personal discomfort and cost helps her achieve it.

But, gotta say, this story isn't for the faint of heart. Dana's backstory, the reason she seeks Eric's help, is brutal. But, help her fight her way back from the shell she'd become after her attack to the vivacious young woman she was Eric does.

And, ya gotta love how these men in her life, who she hasn't been able to physically touch in years, are toward her. She has so many good men who rally for her, blotting out the horror in their own small ways, making it possible for her to heal: not just Eric and bro Brenden, but young Babs, Jonny, Webs, even Jim.

Their wives, who take her in and make her one of them, are awesome. Can't wait to see what these guys and gals are up to in other books in this series.

I'm a baseball nut, and haven't really given much attention to hockey since Gretzky played. If not stimulating an interest in the sport, Gayle's portrayal of of the Storm's many players, families and friends has me invested in this group of fictional Portland players.

Read this as part of the Playing for Passion collection. Have read almost the full dozen or so in the compilation, but so far "Breakaway" is by far the best. In fact, it's one of the best I've read in a long time. I'll definitely be adding the rest of the Storm series to my to be read list and Gayle to my list of faves/top recs.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A Hockey Romance With Real Heart 11 mars 2014

Much closer to a 4.5 star read. This is a wonderful story of trust. We follow the heroine as she works to move past a horrific incident. Her plight is real, detailed, and believable. As is the romance and the leading man. The couple feels right, not forced in any way. This book just works on all levels. The hockey speak was a delight for a fan like me yet shouldn`t be too heavy to turn off those who aren`t fans of the sport.
