Présentation de l'éditeur

In interviews ranging from 1972 to 2000, Brian Clough talks about ‘the real Brian Clough’ - how he is perceived by other people; his bluntness and forceful opinions, and what makes him a good football manager. He also discusses the prospect of becoming an MP; his dream job; football hysteria and hooliganism; his childhood and mother’s death; and being imitated by Mike Yarwood. In addition, he considers what people may say about him after his death; buying football players and having managerial ability, as well as sport on TV; leaving Nottingham Forest, and his very public falling out with Peter Taylor. Due to the age and nature of this archive material, the sound quality may vary.

Biographie de l'auteur

Brian Clough was born in 1935. He made his League début for Middlesbrough in 1955. In 1961 a knee injury forced him to hang up his boots. Despite a remarkable goal-scoring record, he gained only two England caps. He began his managerial career with Fourth Division Hartlepool, where he was joined by his long-standing partner Peter Taylor. Together they built a squad that won promotion at the end of the 1967-68 season. By then Clough had moved on to Second Division Derby County. Under his guidance Derby were promoted to the First Division in 1969 and won the League Championship three years later. He left Derby following a very public dispute with the chairman. After brief spells with Brighton and Leeds, Clough became manager of Nottingham Forest in 1975. In 1977 Forest won promotion from the Second Division; in 1978 they won both the League Championship and the League Cup, which they won again in 1979, 1989 and 1990; in 1979 they won the European Cup, a title they retained in 1980. Clough is only the second man ever to have guided two different teams to the League Championship. In 1993 he retired, amidst press speculation about his health and business affairs.

A legend, but not legendary 7 août 2013

Brian Clough is a legend. That he was never England manager, or knighted given they are given out like confetti these days, are nothing short of scandalous. And he should have won many more caps than he did. If you've read any books on or by Clough, you'll know that Old Big 'Ead not only knew his football, but also came up with some classic lines and quotes.
This is most definitely an interesting listen, but it's neither gripping nor essential. I suppose it's not really meant to be, it's just a collection of BBC clips from the many interviews he gave over the years. But if you're looking to laugh, be inspired, or reminded of the greatness of Brian Clough, simply buy the books. However, if, like me, you believe Clough probably could have walked across the Trent without using a bridge, you'll get enjoyment from this hour-long session, but you probably won't listen to it more than once.
