"Broadway" was released in 1954. It was one of those recordings I long considered adding to my collection which is admittedly deep with Cohn's recording as a leader, co-leader, soloist, composer and arranger. RCA A&R executive, the late Jack Lewis was entrusted to add jazz artists to the RCA stable beginning in the 1950's and wisely choose Al Cohn as a cornerstone of the effort. It was a very astute decision. The sessions that Al did for other labels after leaving RCA like Xanadu, Savoy, Concord, Coral, Dawn and a number of foreign labels overshadow this early effort.
"Broadway" is a quintet session with Al joined by alto saxophonist Hal Stein, Harvey Leonard on piano, the great Red Mitchell on bass and drummer Christy Febbo who seems to have disappeared from the scene with the exception of a Bethlehem date with singer Johnny Hartman. Stein and Leonard were journeyman musicians on the jazz scene in the mid-50's but are virtually unknown today.
Red Mitchell was a treat from start to finish for me. Al's tone was lighter than it was to become later on and the Pres influence is pronounced but, those wonderful melodic lines were pure Cohn creating a melody within a melody; the essence of pure improvisation.
The session was typical for it's time; a ballad medley and several lightly swinging tunes on conventional chord changes. Two standouts for me were Al's ballad interpretation of "When It's Sleepy Time Down South" and a blues penned by Mitchell entitled "Help Keep Your City Clean Blues" (I doubt that Mitchell named the tune) which has a very hip melody line placing rhythmic accents in a very unusual way. The line requires repeated listening's to fully appreciate its unique approach to voicing a line.
"Broadway" (two versions of the tune appear) hence the title, is not an essential Cohn recording unless you like me can never get enough of "Mr. Music" as he was called by his musical associates. It was a title he richly deserved. You may want to check out what Al was doing before he became best known as the other half of "Al & Zoot". I was fortunate enough to sit in the Half-Note audience several evenings digging Al & Zoot and to have been introduced to him by a fellow saxophonist which is a memory I treasure. As for "Broadway", for me it was the right decision although it took awhile.

A 1953 10 inch LP session recorded by the minor Progressive label and reissued by Prestige records in 1970 with the addition of alternate takes to fill up the 12 inch LP - Stein's dark toned alto playing is a bit slow and tends to hold the whole group back. Perhaps it would have been better not to include the alternate takes, to get it over with. Both versions of Suddenly It's Spring are instumental
