Présentation de l'éditeur

A great book is no longer enough. An author platform is the most powerful key to success in today’s saturated market, and increasingly, publishers are demanding that new authors come to them with an existing audience of interested followers. Authors who are self-publishing have an even bigger need to build an engaged audience.

Social media makes building the author platform easier than ever, but, unfortunately, most authors struggle to get it right. How can authors create their unique platform, connect with followers, write a manuscript, and grow their business?

In Build Your Author Platform: The New Rules, top literary agent Carole Jelen and tech expert Michael McCallister apply their combined 35 years of expertise to outline 14 practical, hands-on steps to create a presence that will produce high book sales and expanded audience.

From pre-publication through book launch and beyond, authors will learn how to:
• Define goals and a unique brand
• Employ successful website strategies, content, social presence, media authority, and training
• Secure positive reviews
• Attract viewers efficiently without cost

Filled with detailed lessons, examples, success stories, and techniques used by marketing departments at major publishers, Build Your Author Platform is an indispensable guide for anyone looking for insight into publishing, promoting, and marketing books.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Rich content 13 mai 2014

This book is filled with rich content describing an author platform, why it's so important, and how to create it. The authors have done an excellent job describing important topics such as blogging, WordPress, Twitter, Google+, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, and more.

Many authors (including me) take years to build their platform, with a lot of trial and error along the way. With this book, you can skip the trials and errors and instead focus on what works.

If you don't have an author platform, and you're working on a book, this text is for you. An important point is that the time to create it is now. Don't wait until your book is published. By then, it's too late.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 I wish this book had been available when I was starting out! 13 mai 2014

It took me a long time to learn that being a successful author involves a lot more than just pounding out text when the muse hits you. If your goal is to have your work read, rather than just published, you need to read and follow the advice offered in this concise, but comprehensive guide to finding and building the type of audience that will appreciate and buy your book. Although I've been writing books for awhile now, I still learned a great deal from this book, because many of the most useful tools and strategies for reaching your readers weren't even invented when I started out. Beginners and veteran authors alike need to learn how to build a "platform" to promote their books on their own website, share their knowledge and enthusiasm through a compelling blog, and spread the word about their books with new social media from Twitter to Google+ to Facebook, and beyond. Yes, your publisher's marketing department may have expertise in all those areas -- but they have many books to sell, and you are free to concentrate on just one -- yours.

The strongest point of "Build Your Author Platform" is that you can choose exactly which of the tools the authors recommend that are best suited for your own book. Perhaps your creative bent extends beyond writing to YouTube-type videos. One chapter shows you how to use book trailers that you create yourself for YouTube, Vimeo, or publishing on your website. Or, maybe you love public speaking and would like to use personal appearances to tout (and sell) your work. My personal favorite tool is repurposing -- taking something you've written well for a book, and then using that material as a springboard for articles, blogs, or smart device apps. You'll learn how to use the promotional facilities that the world's largest book marketplace -- Amazon -- offers you (for free), and ways to prompt happy readers to promote your book for you.

If you thought your work was finished when a publisher put your manuscript into production, or when you eased your baby through all the steps involved in self-publishing or print-on-demand, this book will help you discover that there is a lot more you can do with a well-constructed author platform. It's not difficult, it can be fun, and it's certainly rewarding.

This book really should be required reading for anyone who's about to sign an author contract. It won't guarantee success, but knowing this material will certainly give you a leg up.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A calm, sober, and complete guide to sharing your expertise with an audience 28 mai 2014

A local independent filmmaker here in New England launched a blog to describe his experience of writing, shooting, and selling his first independent feature. He made an allegory on the "seeking advice from people who've done this successfully" that's stuck with me since I read it ten years ago.

Let's say that in any given period of time, a thousand skydivers jump out of a plane only to have both their main and their backup parachutes fail. Of those, let's say a dozen people survive. You're a skydiver and you'd like to learn how to survive a 12,000 foot free-fall. So you track down those dozen people and ask them how they did it...right?

Nope. All they can tell you is what happened to them. When they tell you their story, you'll find that their steps are impossible to replicate and even if you did, they might not even remotely apply to your situation.

It's sort of a universal truth. I'm sometimes asked (usually during a Q&A after one of my talks) about how I've built an audience and how I manage to be an active journalist in so many mediums. I tell the skydiving story. ("Well, first I had to tell myself to stop pulling on the reserve chute handle; then, I stared to scream a lot, then cry a lot, then when I realized that I'd already wet myself, I decided to go ahead and soil my underwear...hey, you're not writing any of this down...")

So I'm relieved that my friend and literary agent Carole Jelen has co-authored a book on this subject. Carole is a top representative and she specializes in a sub-category of writers: people who want to share their particular and peculiar knowledge. She's seen me through about a dozen books, now, and her expertise in getting ideas to market has always blown me away. I mention that I think (X) would be a good idea for a book, she helps me to spot the problematic areas and leads me to put together a focused proposal, she handles the contracts, she deals with things when everything goes very right and she deals with it when some things go very wrong.

She's represented all kinds of authors who write about all kinds of topics, and she's been an agent and an editor for decades. Carole is, truly, Finest Kind, and that comes through in this book.

Will it guarantee you a successful book and Harry Potter-scale sales numbers? Naw. Remember: skydiving advice. But I've never seen a book that does such a complete job of capturing all of the variables in that alchemy. No one element will do it for you. If you want to create an ecosystem from which you can share your knowledge and somehow get paid to do so, you'll need to write, speak, share, connect, and energize...and this book explains multiple ways of doing each of those things. It accomplishes this through specific examples and plenty of successful case studies with authors. And yes, many of whom certainly owe much of their success to Carole's savvy).

You certainly won't have enough energy to do everything you read about in this book. You'll have a great guide to all of the opportunities available to you and you'll be able to build a solid game plan.

Maybe what I like most about this book is its sedate and sober tone. I just checked the cover to make sure: there isn't a single exclamation point to be found. This isn't your Keys To Making It Big or a get-rich guide. This is a reasoned and informed explanation of the things that a Sharer Of Expertise ought to be doing if they truly want to make a go of it, instead of just starting a Tumblr or self-publishing a Kindle title and then wondering why nobody's reading your stuff and your Inbox remains silent.

I'm just glad that I have something more helpful to share than just the skydiving story. Carole told me about the book a few months ago and I was excited to read it when my comp copy arrived at the house. If I didn't think it was a terrific book, I'd just Tweet about how this friend whom I respect and admire and have worked with for two decades has a new book out, and I'd leave it at that. Here I've written about 700 words.

Take that as my endorsement. You're probably not lucky enough to have Carole Jelen as your book agent, but now you're lucky enough to have so much of her expertise available to you for just a $17 cover price.

A friend gave me this book. Like all great books, some of it appears obvious. That's Carole's gift - making it appear obvious and simple.Don't even dream of releasing a book until you have read and enjoyed the gold in this book. It will save you months of frustration and lead you to success.
