Big waves, beautiful girls, drugs and money. 27 novembre 2007

Big waves, beautiful girls, drugs and money. A fascinating glimpse into the insane life of Bunker Spreckels. At 21, he inherits fifty-million dollars, so like any other reasonable person, he arrives at the bank with an armored car and takes it in cash. This is just one episode in the short life of Bunker Spreckels. Art Brewer's photos perfectly capture the essence of Bunker's wild ride. I would be surprised if Hollywood isn't already in production.

Bunker Spreckles Devine Prince of Decadance 20 décembre 2007
Par Anthony G. Cutugno - Publié sur

I was very interested in the person Bunker Spreckles. Here was a person who, before he had any money, dropped everything and lived on the North Shore, to just surf. He was said to surf as well an any touring pro, but did so only for passon. He rode and made his own boards and had his own style. To me, he represented what surfing should be, to a committed person, and not what it is, and has become. I was thrilled to see a book about him coming, but when I got it and read it, I was very disappointed. I would like to have seen it focus more on his surfing in California and in Hawaii in 69, and also, his lifestyle while in Kuai, and more pictures from the South Africa trip. All it was was a recap of the Surfer's journal article from 93, with a few more photos from when he was spinning out from all the money.

Surfing's 1st Poser: Not worth $100 19 mars 2013
Par Amazon Customer - Publié sur

This is a nice coffee table book that you can proudly display to impress your friends that do not surf. Here are the negatives:
- A total of 10 surfing photos, the best being the cover photo which is used twice. The majority are of Bunker posing shirtless, w/ chicks, fighting stance, etc. If there were shoots of him at Backdoor as described by Rory Russell (page 43) I would love to see it. Art is a great surf photog, but there is very little of that here.
- 50 pages wasted translating the articles into German and French.
- Nothing new. As pointed out CR's articles have been printed in SJ. How exactly and why did he pass?
I suspect this was supposed to be a quick one off by Taschen and they never dreamed it would get $100 used (as I write this, luckily I got mine for a lot less). If you actually surf, I would recommend several cheaper alternatives like Hackman, Greg Noll/Art Surfboard, Ghost Wave and/or Maverick's. You can probably get all of them for the same price.

I knew Bunker 29 mai 2013
Par Joe Blow - Publié sur
Format: Relié
I briefly knew Bunker in his teens. We were next door neighbors in Encino, CA. I lived on Chaplain Ave which bordered Clark Gable's estate. As a child I dug under the fence, went to the house and asked to meet Clark. I was ushered out by what looked like an old south mammy from Gone with the Wind. On Halloween the butler would bring silver dollars to the gate on Petit Ave. I didn't actually meet Bunker until I was 17 and we both went to Cal Western University on Point Loma in San Diego. What a surfer's paradise, dormitories on the cliffs over a reef break, abalone diving and 30 minutes from TJ. Bunker at that age was really a nice normal guy, actually somewhat humble and shy, no arrogance, almost apologetic for his exalted position in the human race: The Golden Child. I met his mother Kaye and sister when we were home for the summer, both very nice people. He was born with a heavy load of fame, fortune and beauty, the most beautiful man I can recall in my 64 years. Too much for a 17 year old yet, and eventually too much for an adult. I haven't read the book yet but am interested in the rest of the story. I will always remember him by the Banzai orange board photo. RIP Bunker...
