Peggy Lee is a personable middle-aged woman, happily married to a veterinarian. Professionally trained as a botanist, she operates a garden shop, conducts experiments in her basement, and consults as a forensic botanist with the local police department and medical examiner. She lives in a big house in a small town reminiscent of Mayberry where no one seems to swear and most of the residents are friendly. You would hardly expect crime in a place like this, but it does occur, and Peggy becomes involved.

A man dies from a poison derived from a flowering plant and police ask Peggy to help solve the crime. She receives a mysterious message that another murder will occur. She encounters a rude neighbor who wants purchase her home and business. Someone tries to break into her home. A medical examiner's assistant is angry after being passed over for the ME's job. Peggy receives a mysterious note. Two more victims die from poisoning. The victims' names share similarities to Peggy's family names. Why? What's the murder motive? Is Peggy's family in danger? If these events and questions interest you, you'll probably enjoy this novel.

It's a fun read, about a generally agreeable cast of characters, with the exception of the murderer. In addition to the murder mystery, the authors include a bonus at the end in the form of a garden journal with useful gardening advice, and some cooking recipes. What more could you ask for?

Highly recommended to Cozy fans.

This is another great Peggy Lee Mystery!! Peggy is at it again helping the police solve a series of murders using flower posion to kill his prey. This novella was well written and kept me guessing who the killer was until the end. If you have read any of the Peggy Lee mysteries you will love this one. If you haven't read any of the other books don't worry the authors have done and excellent job with the back story so you will not feel lost. Joyce and Jim Lavene have written another great story!!! I look forward to reading the next Peggy Lee adventure!!!!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great introduction to series for new readers 4 mai 2013

Owner of The Potting Shed, Peggy Lee, leads a pretty interesting life. She's solved a few murders in her time, and helps the police force on-and-off, not to mention being a lecturer at the local university. So when murdered victims start turning up being poisoned by poisonous plants, the police call on Peggy to help them find a killer. However, Peggy is starting to think the murderer is playing games with her when the victims bear the same name as her police officer husband, who died on the job.

This was my first reading of the Peggy Lee Garden Mysteries, and with this novella I feel caught up on the series. The reader gets to know a little about Peggy and her new husband, Steve, and her son, Paul, and her daughter-in-law, Mai. It's a great introduction and has got me thoroughly enthused for the next release, A Thyme to Die.

Even though I have a blacker than black thumb, I enjoyed the gardening aspect and learning about new things about the plants I already know, and the recipes at the end of the book are to die for.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novella, and given the "cliffhanger-ish" ending, I can't wait to read A Thyme to Die.

Buried by Buttercups is the first Peggy Lee Garden Mystery that I have read, but it definitely won't be the last! The characters are fantastically fun and realistic, and it is clear how each of them feel about Peggy. I would love to meet the charming landscaper Sam, or Peggy's husband Steve who has a few secrets of his own. I definitely wouldn't want to meet the irritating neighbor.

The details provided are vivid and colorful, pulling you right into the scenes. Even though this isn't the first Peggy Lee Garden Mystery, I had no trouble following the story as the back stories provided were clear and detailed without detracting from the story.

There is a lot of information about different poisonous plants that has me wondering what flowers I have at home, but even with all the great info it was never slow or dry in any way.

The plot involved in this mystery was fantastic and I found myself absolutely convinced that the wrong guy was the killer until the very end. The twists and turns of the story were great surprises and they've led me to believe that there will definitely be more Peggy Lee Garden Mysteries to come. I for one can't wait to read them!
