Présentation de l'éditeur

From INTERNATIONAL BEST SELLING AUTHOR Sara Alexi, who ranks as one of Amazon.co.uk's TOP Literary Fiction authors

The second in the Greek Village Collection, following the wildly successful 'Illegal Gardener'

Marina is a gentle soul who makes a modest living in her corner shop. Her husband died years ago, and her children have grown up. Life is pleasantly predictable, if a little dull.

But not even her daughters know that thirty five years ago Marina spent lonely months on a nearby island, and the events of that summer have haunted her ever since.

Now Marina's daughter is planning to move to the same island and the past and present threaten to collide with dreadful consequences.

Black Butterflies follows Marina reluctantly revisiting the island. She has a plan, of sorts, to avert possible tragedy but in doing so she will come face to face with the consequences of her long kept secret. Will she be in time, and why does she never go anywhere without her big black bag?

Packed with a troupe of colourful characters that intertwine in a gripping story, Black Butterflies is by turn uproariously funny, touching or sad.

Exploring themes of bigotry and how doing what we think is for the best can unwittingly harm those we love, this is a gentle journey to one woman's redemption.

Praise for Black Butterflies

"It bounces along at a fair pace, taking the reader on an emotional ride through an idyllic landscape inhabited by a cast of sympathetic and believable characters. And this is where the beauty of Alexi's writing lies, she manages to steer a course through the human reality of life in a Mediterranean paradise, without sentimentality." - Richard Clark - Author of 'The Greek Islands - A Notebook'

"I want to visit and taste the food and the wine and travel by Taxi boat. Sara Alexi once again conjures tales from a place that seems close to perfection."

"I could not put it down, the descriptions of the island, village and characters was brilliant."

"if you liked the first in this series, get ready because this one is even better."

"Marina's story is about life and love and it will make you sad and happy, which is so good for us all!"

"What a wonderful book this is, I am so glad I stumbled upon it and just wish I had found her first book before I immersed myself in this one."

"Alexi weaves the kind tale of heartbreak and happiness that is universal to so many women"

"Complex and engaging characters dance around each other before the pieces of the family jigsaw ultimately, and very satisfyingly, fall into place."

"I read it in one sitting, being unable to put it down."

If you enjoyed 'The Pact' or 'The Story Teller' by Jodi Picoult, 'Necessary Lies' by Diane Chamberlain, 'The Thread' or 'The Island' by Victoria Hislop or 'The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry' by Rachel Joyce you'll love this book...

Biographie de l'auteur

Sara Alexi was born in Oxford, England. She has travelled widely and now spends much of her time in a tiny rural village in the Peloponnese, in Greece, where she is (very slowly!) renovating a ruined stone farmhouse, whilst observing the Greek way of life and absorbing the culture, to enrich her vision for both writing and painting. Sara began writing later in life. In school English lessons were a time of confusion, books indecipherable hieroglyphics. Dyslexia was not well understood then and no support was available. The joy of reading and writing were cancelled by the teacher's red pen ... Despite her dyslexia Sara qualified as a psychotherapist and ran her own practice for years. Her artistic nature was, at that time, confined to painting and she exhibited widely. In a casual conversation with a client she discovered that Agatha Christie, Jules Verne and Hans Christian Andersen were all dyslexic, and Sara's perspective changed. The world of fiction opened to her with this shift in perception and she has been a prolific writer ever since. Her 'Greek Village Series' has been very well received and provides a keenly observed, compassionate insight into the Greek people and culture, and the human condition in general. Even better than the first book in the series, Black Butterflies takes us on an endearing character's search to find the man her daughter must not marry. Along the way we meet delightful people, and the story unfolds in unexpected ways. I loved this book. It takes us to a place both ancient and modern in every way and has an ending so satisfying and unusual that you will want to share this book with others, as I did.

I read the first book in this two-book "Greek series," The illegal Gardner, and absolutely loved it. This is what inspired me to read the second book, Black Butterflies. I was surprised that a minor character in the first book became the major character in the second book and the major character in the first book became a minor character in the second. The result is two different perspectives of life in Greece, one from an ex-pat, in the first book, and one from a Greek. I advise reading The Illegal Gardner first.

Another beautiful book. This is the second book I've read by Sara Alexi and it will not be the last. Her prose is beautiful, characters are true and believable. Ms. Alexi brings the reader along on her character's journey. I felt the sun and sea breeze on my face. I could smell the jasmine, the food and yes, even the not quite as pleasant donkey dung on the mountain path. I smiled, chuckled and had tears in my eyes. There is such joy in reading a story well told.

Marina, Eleni, Artemis, Petra, Ireni, Zoe and Bobby, Panos, Papas, Costa Voulgaris... Names so musical and so, well, Greek. An old Greek island, full of history and memories, yet growing a little more modern to appease the tourists. Bougainvilla, stone steps, whitewashed walls, red tile roofs, donkeys, cats, and stray dogs; quayside cafes with boutsakas and coffee. This place is the setting, these people are the lives you have been made privy to. The author has brought a wonderful story to life. Martina's secret has kept her from loving her daughter Eleni. Eleni's secret kept her angry at her mom. The loss of a baby boy, Marina's friendship with first the boat captain (and his fiance, who brings her to the island, then Zoe's family where she lodges, then meeting the cafe keeper Costas (who has his own secrets!) and Panos the barber and Papos the priest, and Maria, who makes so many things clear- the story will touch your heart, the suspense of knowing will cause you to smile and cry. And then there are the beautiful black butterflies that finally come together in recognition. Feast on this beautifully drawn tale of life and love and loss and new beginnings.
While this book is ostensibly one of three, I did not read the first, nor have I yet read the last, but I found nothing lacking and nothing that needed adding to this book. While the beginning may seem a bit slow and meandering, if you stay the course, I promise you will be delighted!
