4.0 étoiles sur 5 An excellent tool to prepare you for the TSHOOT exam. 23 février 2010
Par Matthew Norwood - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Relié
The latest revision to the CCNP track has removed ONT and ISCW and replaced them with the TSHOOT, or troubleshooting exam. This exam is designed to test your ability to troubleshoot various problems that a CCNP-level engineer will see in their day to day jobs. The Official Certification Guide for the TSHOOT(642-832) exam goes a long way towards preparing you to take the exam. Written by Cisco training veteran Kevin Wallace, this guide hits all the high points of topics found in the TSHOOT exam.

For veterans of the CCNP program, the TSHOOT exam will bring back memories of the old Cisco Internetwork Troubleshooting or CIT (642-831) exam. For people new to the CCNP program, this exam should be a lot of fun and a decent way to test your understanding of the way the various technologies in the ROUTE and SWITCH exams work.

The book is divided into 14 chapters that are as follows:

1. Introduction to Network Maintenance
2. Introduction to Troubleshooting Processes
3. The Maintenance and Troubleshooting Toolbox
4. Basic Cisco Catalyst Switch Troubleshooting
5. Advanced Cisco Catalyst Switch Troubleshooting
6. Introduction to Troubleshooting Routing Protocols
7. OSPF and Router Redistribution Troubleshooting
8. Troubleshooting BGP and Router Performance Issues
9. Security Troubleshooting
10. IP Services Troubleshooting
11. IP Communications Troubleshooting
12. IPv6 Troubleshooting
13. Advanced Services Troubleshooting
14. Large Enterprise Network Troubleshooting
15. Final Preparation

Each chapter begins with a "Do I Know This Already? quiz that is fairly standard in Cisco Press exam books. This allows you to skip over chapters that cover topics you may already be well versed in.

The first 3 chapters cover the fundamentals behind how to perform maintenance and troubleshoot effectively. If you are experienced in these things, you probably won't see anything that you haven't seen before. If you don't have a lot of background with Cisco networking, you will want to pay close attention to these first 3 chapters. They lay the foundation that is required to understand the remaining chapters.

The rest of the chapters move from switching, to routing, to security, and on to a variety of other topics that you will deal with in a standard Cisco network. Each of these remaining chapters, except for the last one, will present you with a brief amount of material that is of a foundational nature. If you are expecting a full review of the topics like spanning tree or OSPF, you will be disappointed. The TSHOOT book is not designed for that. You will want to review the ROUTE and SWITCH CCNP exam books first. What you will see in terms of foundational information are quick blurbs about each technology. For example, in the BGP chapter you get a brief reminder of how BGP routes or prefixes wind up in the general IP routing table. You will also get a refresher on how BGP makes its path selection.

After the foundational information, you will immediately move into the various commands that are used to troubleshoot the particular technology in question. According to chapter 15 in the book, 90% of the exam will be centered around the use of various commands to troubleshoot. With that in mind, I would estimate between 30 and 40% of the book is CLI output. The author shows you the various "show" commands that are used along with a variety of "debug" commands you can use as well. The relevant parts of the output are hi-lighted and explained in the standard format you see in many other Cisco Press books. If the author were to include examples of every possible command that could be used for troubleshooting, the book would be 3 times the size it already is. What you will see for sure are the most common commands used to troubleshoot the particular technology each chapter covers.

This leads us into what I think is the most valuable part of the book. Each of these technology chapters end with one or more trouble tickets. A problem is presented along with CLI output from one or more devices. There is enough information given for you to make a guess as to what the root cause of the problem is and how to correct it. The solution is presented following the various CLI screens used to provide troubleshooting information. Each solution is explained fairly well and generally includes additional CLI output to further illustrate the validity of the solution. The chapter wraps up by mentioning key terms as well as providing a list of troubleshooting commands associated with each technology covered in that chapter.

A CD-ROM is included with the book that has 100 practice questions for the TSHOOT exam.

Overall, this was an enjoyable book to read. If you are already functioning at a CCNP level, I recommend you focus on the trouble ticket sections in each chapter. Those sections more than any other will help solidify your understanding of the various route/switch technologies covered in the TSHOOT exam. You will be able to move fairly quickly through this book. I work with just about everything mentioned in this book on a daily basis and was able to finish the book in about a week. I averaged about 2 chapters a day. At around 500 pages, it would seem this book would take longer to read than a week. However, a fair amount of pages consist of CLI screen shots and they take up a lot of real estate in the book. For those who are not well versed in this material but have a basic understanding of the concepts, you should be able to get through a chapter a day with relative ease.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A useful, well-written book from Cisco Press 22 février 2010
Par Susie Ree - Publié sur Amazon.com

Cisco recently revised the entire CCNP curriculum to replacing BSCI with ROUTE, and BCMSN with SWITCH. TSHOOT is the third test required to complete the new CCNP curriculum, replacing ISCW and ONT. This book is the Official Certification Guide for the TSHOOT test, but this book is useful to people who are working in the networking field because it gives a good theoretical basis for rigorous troubleshooting approaches.

This book has some changes from the previous Cisco Official Certification Guides. Key topics are clearly noted with a symbol in the margin of the book. There are no end-of-chapter quizzes, rather there are Exam Preparation Tasks which suggest which items to memorize, which commands to review and what definitions are key. This is coordinated with information included in the Compact Disc included in the book.

I am impressed with Cisco's commitment to improvement of the CCNP curriculum. As someone who recently completed the old CCNP, I have found that much of the information I learned in the first two tests has disappeared from lack of use. Based on what I have seen in the TSHOOT Official Certification Guide, the new curriculum reinforces lessons from the ROUTE and SWITCH tests. So, if you haven't worked with BGP for a while, you will get a review of BGP when you go through the book. I believe this makes the CCNP certification more valuable.

Likewise, Cisco Press seems to have learned from the shortcomings of prior books. Kevin Wallace writes well and his style makes reading this book relatively easy (considering the subject matter). The author has clearly delineated the processes of explaining theory, providing troubleshooting examples, and listing what needs to be memorized. This is the best CCNP related book that I have read so far.

This book is an awsome book. I thought I was good at troubleshooting network problems until I readed this book. It showed me how to logically think and work the problem through to get to a satisfactory ending. It starts off by teaching you simplified model of troubleshooting.

Problem Reporting.
Problem Diagnosis.
Problem resolution.

Then it takes you into an area the really helped me to better understand how to correctly troubleshoot.

Popular Troubleshooting Methods.

Also how to establish a baseline and what tools to use to fine the cause of the problem. This book is good for someone who's just starting and those who are advanced in this field. I recommend this book to all Cisco Technician who has a desire to be the best. This book will open your eyes to things that you have not seen but is present before you daily.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Great material, fresh format 7 mai 2010
Par Jason T. Masker - Publié sur Amazon.com

I am a current CCNP who has made regular use of the Cisco Press Certification Guide Series to pass Cisco Exams. Recently, Cisco revamped the certification path for its CCNP certification. This guide is the first for the new TSHOOT exam.

Although the certification path I followed for CCNP did not include the TSHOOT exam, I recognized most of the actual material from the older BSCI & BCMSN tests. However, the presentation of this material has changed dramatically. Where the older material typically required you to know several show commands and the output they produce, the new material focuses on problems that may occur and the effective use of show commands to isolate the problem and identify what needs to be corrected. This is typically quite a bit trickier than simply memorizing the show commands and you will find this guide a welcome help in preparing for examination.

One feature I really liked was the inclusion of "trouble ticket" sections in many of the chapters where you are presented with a trouble ticket, given some show command output and asked to identify the problem. The trouble tickets are a useful exercise and help bridge the gap between book knowledge and what you might encounter in real life. Throughout the book there is an emphasis on creating baselines and the author does a good job of showing how useful these baselines are during later troubleshooting efforts.

The software included with the book was a disappointment. Boson has a great reputation for NetSim, their Cisco network simulator, but I did not find any simulated scenarios on the CD. On the CDs from my older CCNP certification guides they would usually include one or two simulation exercises. This material contained only multiple choice, multiple answer and drag & drop style questions were presented. I felt this was a missed opportunity especially because the TSHOOT material is more suited for the scenario style questions than for multiple choice questions. One redeeming point is that I was able to register the exam to my account on [...] and this makes the process of retrieving previously registered exams on a new computer relatively easy.

Overall, the CCNP TSHOOT Certification Guide is an advisable investment for anyone seeking to take the exam, delivering the same quality material we have all come to expect of Cisco Press exam preparation materials. The guide is also a good resource if you are looking to augment your troubleshooting skills or check how your existing knowledge stands up to the new exam format.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Good Book ***NO PDF INCLUDED*** 8 mars 2010

This book was very adequate, had all necessary information and definitely helped with passing the test. However, please note that all the new Cisco CCNP books (ROUTE, TSHOOT, and SWTICH) DO NOT come with PDFs, unlike previous books, which did come with the PDFs. I was very dissapointed in this fact, as I liked to load the PDF on my Kindle and read while on the train, where the big heavy books didn't exactly work.
