One of the most attractive parts of this combo is the automated testing program included on the DVD-- it has 1200+ test questions with explanations for each answer (why the "correct" answer was correct and why the others weren't). It also looks and feels quite similar to the actual test format. I think I probably learned more from taking the practice tests than reading the book alone.
Side note: In addition to reading through my notes the day before the test I also read Eleventh Hour CISSP, Second Edition: Study Guide by Conrad et. al. It wasn't enough to use alone, but it was a great (brief) summary of the material.
Yes, the book is exceedingly long and wordy. There is much more information in the pages than is required to pass the exam, and for sure the amount of information present is a bit overwhelming. But for me, getting all the extra background infomation behind the concepts was a huge help. I read the book cover to cover four times (a couple of times before having to stop studying due to "life" matters, then two times more recently when the serious studying resumed). That fourth time, it all fell into place. Even with concepts in which I have no real life experience (see: cryptopgraphy, software development), the concepts became quite understandable and familiar. All the wordiness in this book provided the depth of knowledge I needed to pass this very cognitive exam.
There is no shortcut to passing this exam for most people. You simply have to put in the time to become familiar with literally thousands of terms and concepts. Living and breathing the contents of this book for a few months in a row pushed this over the top for me. I used a couple of the Eric Conrad books towards the end of my study time to give me a more concise review of overall concepts, but this book is what layed the solid foundation of understanding for me. The soft cover book filled with additional test questions was also a fine resource to gadge progress in each domain. I used nothing else besides this book and single readings of the two Eric Conrad books.
Sadly, Shon Harris passed away last fall. I heard that she was working on the next edition of this book with the updated domains before her death. I hope that her company Logical Security (or whoever may be carrying on her legacy) comes out with a next version of this book so that future prospective CISSP candidates who have a passion for the security industry have the best possible chance for success on the exam. I will always feel indebted to Shon Harris for getting me through the significant undertaking of studying for the CISSP exam. I know that many other CISSPs feel the same way.
