Présentation de l'éditeur

* Contains literary critiques, detailed biographies, and detailed historical context

It is impossible to convey in words Tolstoy’s extraordinary capacity to transform a work of fiction into a spiritual quest for truth. Indeed, in War and Peace, it is above all, the exhausted truthfulness in his character that is most striking, revealing a sincerity which seems to fear nothing in exploring the most profound and inexorable philosophical ideas.

Indeed, it is in this context that Tolstoy’s enigmatic remark, namely that War and Peace is "not a novel, even less is it a poem, and still less an historical chronicle" can be understood. For War and Peace certainly is a truly great novel, is an undeniably powerful poem and is a historical chronicle of epic proportions. But underneath the unforgettable scenes of destruction and the beautiful passage on love is a metaphysical treatise on the very nature of Man and his relationship to God.
This collection brings together, for the first time in one volume, Tolstoy’s War and Peace with the definitive preface on Tolstoy’s lasting literary legacy.

The masterful translation, which was personally approved by Tolstoy himself, is by Louise and Aylmer Maude.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A novel dealing with many aspects of life 16 décembre 2011

This is an annotated version of a book that everyone knows of, but not enough take the time to read. Admittedly, it is long. Surprisingly it is gripping from begining to end.
Tolstoy displays an understanding of the diverse motivations which drive us all. If more people understood the confused and arbitrary nature of the human idiocy we call War, fewer would want anything to do with it. Reading Tolstoy's epic novel is a good start.
Thinking it would be a challenge, I set a goal to read thirty pages a day of War and Peace. Each day I found myself reading more and more. As with all great books, it seemed to be finished too soon.
The annotations are a very enjoyable addition. Just reading about Tolstoy's life is a story in itself. His activities seem too much for one life.

I just got this on my kindle, and I am enjoying the book. However, I believe it will take me several months to finish, as I see that I am still only 4% finished with it, according to kindle! I really like this volume as it has a table of contents which is nicely indexed, not like some of the other less expensive kindle books out there. I also purchased Anna Karenina (Cambridge World Classics Edition) and I think that together I have ended up paying less than $2.00 for what would have been more than 3000 pages of literature. Wow!

This is the Maude translation of Tolstoy's masterpiece, which has been a standard version for many years. It is a bit old-fashioned and there is some awkwardness in the way the French language passages are handled. There are other hiccups in the scanned typography whch pop up now and then. However, the price ($.99)/value proposition is very good, and the narrative is simply outstanding. Beware Tolstoy's embedded philosophical and metaphysical digressions, which apparently made him a virtual saint to the Russian people, but which are now simply tedious. These are easily identified and you can read them if you want...I skimmed, and felt I didn't miss anything.

What can one say about the greatest novel ever written. I have read and re-read this many times but it seems especially pertinent today. Pierre is initially taken with the fresh new leader of Europe. He idealizes Napoleon and is certain that he will bring a new dawn to Europe. The war changes him and he comes to see Napoleon as just another in an interminable line of European dictators. That seems to me to be very relevant to America today.
