Présentation de l'éditeur

It's a dream come true for historic preservationist Ashley Wilkes: her restored Victorian house is on the Olde Wilmington by Candlelight tour. But her dream quickly turns nightmarish when a docent is murdered in the library, and her friend, history professor Binkie Higgins, is the likely suspect. As the bodies drop faster than dead needles off a dry Christmas tree, Ashley's as busy as Santa's elves: proving Binkie's innocence, rescuing sister Melanie and a historic property from a ruthless developer. And, la-di-da, solving the Atlantic Coast Line's 40 year old payroll robbery.

I can't wait till your next in the series. Don't ever stop!” Kathy

“I finished Christmas Wedding yesterday evening and I really loved it. You did a great job with the characters and elements of surprise as well as keeping it believable. I enjoy the historical information you include, it makes me want to come further south the next time we come to the Outer Banks. I have started “Murder at the Bellamy Mansion” and have to really restrain myself to not let my work go and just sit and read. “ Mary Ann

“I just finished the last of the Magnolia Mysteries, when are you going to write more? I love the characters and the settings. You can't just leave your readers guessing about what Melanie, Ashley, Scarlett and the rest will do with all the gold coins they found. Please continue the series. A true fan.” Lucie

“I just stumbled across your first book last weekend and am now up to book 5 - I simply can NOT put them down. They are wonderfully written - with characters you get to know and love and want to know more about. I thoroughly enjoy the descriptions of Wilmington - it sounds like a place I want to visit someday. To top that off, I am thoroughly enjoying the mysteries themselves - you have excellent plot twists and just when I think I've figured out "whodunit" I realize I'm wrong. I've been surprised every time!” Beth

“Just wanted to jot you a quick note of thanks for writing such a wonderful series. I just discovered the Magnolia Mysteries on my kindle last week. After reading the first three, I broke down and bought them all! You have an amazing talent for developing your characters and creating a sense of place in your books. I can't wait to read the rest of them they are such a joy to read!” Angela

This author is a great writer and it's obvious that she has a great love for historic preservation and for old buildings. She is wonderful at painting a picture with words of how the houses and the areas look. I just have a hard time with her main character Ashley. Ashely is a rather self centered woman and a little to arrogant for my taste. She is all about her own feelings. While she does care about her friends and family (and tries to get a friend off a murder rap in this book) the way she goes about it is irksome. She is like a child when she doesn't get her way with her friend Jon and the detective she is dating, Nick. In one part of the book Nick has the courtesy to warn Ashley that he is about to arrest her friend Binkie (which is a strange name for a 72 year old man) and then she complains to her friend Rachel how Nick "thought he was doing her a kindness by warming her of the arrest" and follows that up with , "Honestly Rachel, what did I ever see in him?" Well, he was doing her a kindness! There are also parts in the book like when she's getting dressed she states, "I could be on the cover of Vogue", which just sounded arrogant to me. Some would call this self confidence which she does have, but that just came off as arrogant. She also comes off as a brash, selfish person who becomes so obsessed with getting her way that she does stupid things and puts her self in danger. She actually doesn't deserve the detective for a boyfriend. He has done nothing but try to do his job while being courteous and kind to her while she is manipulative, dishonest and childish with him. I managed to get through the book and loved the historical details, and the other characters in the book are well drawn and interesting.
Overall it was a great book, but there were many times I wanted to throttle Ashley for her self centered ness and for doing stupid things. I honestly don't find her to be real like able . However, I plan on reading the next book in the series to see if she becomes more like able. This is just my opinion, I am sure there are some readers who will like her. She does have good qualities and she is plucky and a loyal friend.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Lovely setting lacks lovely characters 2 octobre 2012

The setting and storyline make this mystery worth reading. The author's description of the scenes made me feel as though I was there. The main characters however are self-centered and do not seem to fit the stereo-typical southern Wilmington type. Melanie is the worst, a whiny annoying clucking hen that cares more about matching her shoes to her purse than her family. And Ashley is just an idiot, always putting herself in harm's way. She has nine lives in every book. The characters lack something I just can't put my finger on. They are detached singles that hang out like in some after school special.

At $3.99 it was worth the purchase but by book 4, I was so done with this cast of selfish immature characters that I threw in the towel.

I enjoy all of Hunter's books. They take place in the Carolinas and give good descriptions of the area. The book is an easy read and a good mystery. I hope she writes more1
