The pictures included are mostly excellent, showing the plants in habitat when possible, instead of just using cultivated plants. And although the distribution maps may be a bit dated, they are helpful to understand the general areas where the plants might be found. Also, included with each section is some basic cultivation advice that I've found very helpful.
This isn't a book for a novice grower of carnivorous plants, but rather for someone who's been growing them for a while and wants more information on their native habitats and environments, as well as more technical information on each plant. An excellent book.
I bought this book for my son, an avid carnivorous plant grower since his high school days. He had seen the 2nd edition hardcover version (2002) in the library and wanted a copy of his own. I had preferred to buy the hard cover edition, but that seemed to be no longer available.
The sample pages of the book on the Amazon Web site show color pictures, with a disclaimer that the pages shown are from the hardcover edition, but without mention that they are B/W in the book offered for sale. Fortunately Amazon agreed to the return of the book. They even provided a mailing label for free return shipping via the US Mail. I ordered a "like new" used copy of the hardcover 2nd edition via Amazon from a third-party bookseller at a reasonable price. The book arrived in excellent condition, so all is well that ends well!
Incidentally, some sellers are offering the hardcover book for sale at ridiculous prices. If the book is in such strong demand, I wonder why the publisher doesn't prepare a new edition
