Présentation de l'éditeur

Multihull Pioneer Jim Brown Makes the Case for Cruising Trimarans With Personal Stories, Compelling Facts & Wide-Ranging Insight

This classic book about cruising trimarans is now back in print!

Well-known multihull designer Jim Brown offers his unique experiences and insight into the design factors that make for safe, seaworthy, comfortable trimarans.

He blends personal stories with technical information about these fast vessels, and shows why multihull yacht pioneers in the 20th century were sometimes referred to as the "Hells Angels of the Sea."

This book contains a wealth of information about cruising yachts, meaning cabin cruisers, but even small boat multihull lovers will enjoy this book. There is something in it for prospective owners of luxury boats, used boats, or anyone who wants to take any multihull offshore.

Much of the book is dedicated to the subject of "capsizing," and offers timeless wisdom on how it can be prevented. There is even a chapter about "self-rescue," and techniques for how a small, capsized vessel can be self-righted. For bigger multihulls that have overturned, Jim offers time-less advice on the best approaches for recovery in order to repair it.

This book is fully illustrated with original black and white photos and humorous illustrations by Jo Hudson. Multihullers in general (and trimaran lovers in particular) will discover Jim Brown's sailing philosophy and walk away with a thorough understanding of the features and benefits offered in well-designed and properly handled cruising trimarans.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Most readable account of trimaran design and issues 9 septembre 2007

When I first started reading books with an eye to acquiring a boat, I made the mistake of reading this one and could never again be satisfied with a mono-hull. In addition to answering the host of tradition-oriented, unfounded arguments against multi-hulls, this book leads you through a design of a cruising (fairly large) trimaran, pointing out many details of the design that can only come from lots of experience. The cartoons help too. While the book is now quite old, it seems that the wisdom is still quite relevant to anyone thinking of live-aboard cruising.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Jim Brown is a masterful communicator! 7 octobre 2010

I bought this book when it was first published many years ago and still occasionally refer to it. It will never leave my collection. The reason is because it is an excellent book on the proper way to prepare ANY boat for long distance cruising and because Jim Brown is an excellent writer and communicator and has a ton of common sense. He's a really good guy too! Get anything written by Jim Brown and you will be both entertained and thoroughly educated about the subject he is discussing.

I've bought a lot of books from Amazon but this is the first time I've ever left a review.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A must read for future trimaran owners 21 décembre 2012

I have sailed most of my life on monohulls and am planning to transition to multihulls. This is my first read on the subject (I found it very difficult to find proper read on trimarans), and I read the book in just few days. It also has great re-read potential as despite the age of the book, most of it still applies to nowadays situations, or can easily be adapted. Jim Brown is a very smart, truthful and honest writer, who definitely mentally prepares you to the reality of sailing a multihull. The many accounts of survival situations are impressive, and brutal at times, but when facing the ocean it is the reality that we all should always have in the back of our mind. I highly recommend that book.

This book is a must read for potential or current multihull enthusiasts. The author defines and gives context for safe passagemaking across large bodies of water in multihull sailing craft. He gives you the why's and how's of accomplishing safe travel to distant lands aboard these vessels. The book gives large doses of reality for when things do not go your way, and you find yourself needing to survive in your craft in an inverted state for a prolonged period of time. And more importantly, how to avoid this situation with proper seamanship, proper loading of stores, and most importantly - proper boat design. This is a book that will stay in your library at home (for reference) and also will most certainly adorn the book locker on many craft sailing the worlds oceans. A large thumbs up for folks looking at the truth of life aboard sailing multihulls.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 A Classic on Cruising Trimarans 4 août 2010

I read this book when it was first published in the 1970s and have kept it in my bookcase ever since. The author provides a very well thought-out design for his craft that goes beyond what is typically seen in marine texts. The description of the 34 foot model takes up quite a bit of the book and is quite interesting and detailed. I would hope that the author writes a future book on the follow-on Seaclipper designs and of his work in the developing world.
