Change of Heart: Book One

As a young gay man—and a werepanther—all Jin Rayne yearns for is a normal life. Having fled his past, he wants nothing more than to start over, but Jin’s old life doesn’t want to let him go. When his travels bring him to a new city, he crosses paths with the leader of the local were-tribe. Logan Church is a shock and an enigma, and Jin fears that Logan is both the mate he fears and the love of his life. Jin doesn’t want to go back to the old ways, and mating would irrevocably tie him to them.

But Jin is the mate Logan needs at his side to help him lead his tribe, and he won’t give Jin up so easily. It will take time and trust for Jin to discover the joy in belonging to Logan and how to love without restraint.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A wonderful surprise from a new-to-me author. 18 janvier 2011

First of all, I cannot get enough of Para-Romance, my first delve into gay lit was some of this and its stuck with me ever since. I really do love finding new authors, whos worlds are unique and wonderful in themselves and finding out how their characters operate. Marry Calmes has truly spun a world that fleshes out and you can understand the old laws and places of the characters in the hierarchy. The deep backdrop gives the story interesting interactions and meaning to the characters actions.

The characters I love. The true test for me of a good story is if in such a book with so many people introduced to us, if I can recall who they are when they again appear, and I did. I love the evolving relationship between the main character and his mate, albeit rather instantaneous at first but fits in with the world created.

Towards then end of the book I find myself the only part which was less then perfect for me. It seems within the last few chapters all there was, was sex. Quite literally one scene would end and the next paragraph they were yet gain having sex for 3 or 4 bouts in a row, which felt like it was shoved in there rather then following the story.

Overall the greatness of the world and the characters leave me with no choice but to give it the 5 stars I believe it deserves.

I am the Review Chair for the Paranormal Romance Guild

E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G. Passes my desk. Mary Calmes where have you been all my life? I had this book on my Kindle, probably saw it as a reccommend on Goodreads from one of my "friends' Yesterday was Saturday and I decided to take a break and not read a book in queue for review...Best move I made all week.

Mary Calmes this is the first book I have read of yours but I must say it will NOT BE MY LAST !

Jin a were-panther shifter and has been banished from his pack by his own father and family. They are so ashamed he is gay, they cannot see past their own history.Their son is a reah, someone to be cherished. But the gay thing is a bitter pill for this family to swallow like in most families, and Jin is beaten and left for dead on the side of the road..

A Semel is the leader of the pack. A Reah is their gifted mate. Most Semel's and Reah's do not find each other and for the sake of their pack, a Semel will choose a mate and continue the bloodline. The gift from God is the chance that they will find each other.

Jin has learned to adapt in the human world. He has toughened himself to be alone not wanting to be a part of any family, or any pack.

This is truly a beautiful story of two people coming together, and learning to share and give what each one needs. How wonderful the lessons we see learned and hope that in any relationship the fires still remains...

Wonderful story Mary

I don't know what to think about this book. I've read many shifters books, so I was a bit dissappointed on the aspects of the 'tribal' world the author tried to developed. I felt she gave bits and pieces but did't really give us the world as a whole. The "reah" and "semel" business was okay at first since it explained things, but it got annoying fast. As well as the the 'laws' which most tribe members didn't know well. But what I couldn't believe was that Logan accepted his male "reah" without objections. He displayed such an alpha male attitude that it made it hard for me to trust his love.

I give this book 3 stars because: (1)I loved Jin and Crane, their characters, their relationship and loyalty to each other. I especially liked Jin's realistic take of the whole "reah" and "semel" situation with him and Logan. I was glad he had his doubts. (2)The sex scenes were good, some a little hurried others more tender. Nice. (3)I've loved all the books I've read so far by Mary Calmes. So brownie points for that!

Overall, it wasn't a horrible book, but it could have been better. I liked the sequel much more.

~3.5 stars.

It really surprises me that I happen to like this book despite the shifter/were-whatever-animal plot.

This book has all the elements I usually dislike in the shifter genre: mating with instantly-falling-in-love-with-each-other-characters, love that is fated and seems more like a spell/curse than the real thing, sudden straight to gay shift without any issues etc.
But for some reason they worked for me in this book.

First of all, I like the 1st person POV (Jin). I totally bonded with him and I could totally understand his motivation for being on the run, not staying anywhere too long in order to keep possible contact to pack members/other shifters to a minimum.

Whereas were-animals of any kind usually seem to desire meeting their, and only their, mate in this genre (and in this book as well), it was quite refreshing to read about someone who wants to prevent exactly that.
Jin believes that meeting his mate will turn him into a slave to this "pseudo-love" and deprive him of his free will.
I couldn't agree more with him. That's exactly the issue I'm having with the whole mating thing.

Jin, of course, doesn't succeed in his whole "never-meet-my-mate" agenda, despite all his efforts, and becomes what he feared most - a slave to this (so-called) love caused by the mating procedure.

Surprisingly, I didn't mind that the love between the 2 MCs in this book is due to the fact that they are mates, destined to love each other forever. Why? I can't really put my finger on it.
Maybe it was because of the likable and believable nature of the 2nd MC, Logan.
Maybe it was because the book itself addresses the problematic nature of the mating.
Who knows..

One other thing I really like is the detail Mary Calmes dedicated to the description of rules and laws of and life within the pack. Whereas some reviewers said that they were having problems with all the terminology in this book, I actually happen to like it because it helps explaining the different functions of the pack members very well.
Using this set of "invented words"(?) gives the book a certain credibility, that certain something.

As you can see, "Change of Heart" proved my previous judgement about the shifter-m/m-genre wrong. This book is a enthralling and engrossing read.
I can rcommend it with a clear conscience ;)

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Great world building, need a glossary! 25 octobre 2010

I really enjoyed this book, there are just some minor flaws, in my opinion, which depend on my taste rather than the book itself, probably.

What I liked:

* Jin, the narrator. He was rejected by his family and tribe, but he's not constantly whining about his past. I admired the way he is able to put his past behind and his willingness to start over again. His desire to be accepted, to be loved and to belong somewhere made me root for him. I loved him, it's as simple as that.

* I didn't like Logan, Jin's mate, at first, he seemed too flat and not too smart, if I must tell the truth. Then, when he had to make up to Jin, he was wonderful, warm, understanding. The narration is in first person, so we just get to know Logan's reactions, not his point of view, but his action, even if rushed and maybe unsuitable for the leader of his tribe, were dictated by his heart, which is probably very big.

* The world that the author built is original and well thought. There's a set of rules the were-society follows. I agree with those who said that it seems these rules are pulled out of the hat when they are needed, but maybe it depends on the choice by the author of letting the reader learn that world instead of explaining it. I also liked the way the panthers shifted from animal to werepanthers to humans. And the interaction between the characters when they were in different stages of their shifting was incredibly hot. I love cats, so I could totally envision their feline behavior.

What I didn't like:

* As I said before, the author chooses to immerse the reader in the world she created without explaining the terminology or the rules, being confident that the reader will catch everything by the end. Yes, it happens, but it's so difficult at the beginning. I hope the next edition (or the sequel, if published) will have a glossary.

* Sometimes there was too much dialogue and I had to go back a few paragraphs to understand who was speaking.

These are the reasons why I will give 4 stars instead of 5. The story is great and I will re-read it in the future.
