Biographie de l'auteur

William Hazlitt (10 April 1778 – 18 September 1830) was an English writer, remembered for his humanistic essays and literary criticism, and as an art critic, drama critic, social commentator, and philosopher. He was also a painter. He is now considered one of the great critics and essayists of the English language, placed in the company of Samuel Johnson and George Orwell. Yet his work is currently little read and mostly out of print. During his lifetime he befriended many people who are now part of the 19th-century literary canon, including Charles and Mary Lamb, Stendhal, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and William Wordsworth.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Very nice book. 14 décembre 2012

The book is really nice. It covers most well-known Shakespearean plays and gives lots of examples taken from the plays. Unfortunately, though, the characters are not deeply analysed. It's a nice aquisition for students (like myself).
5.0 étoiles sur 5 An "old" book, with a persistant value. 16 mai 2014

If you are new to Shakespeare, and you wish some guidance on which plays to read, this may be the perfect introduction to both selecting and understanding Shakespeare's plays. This is an ideal reference book to have on Kindle. In his peace on "The Midsummer Night's Dream", he immediately and correctly identifies the principle character as Bottom, the weaver. Shakespeare may have the most complete and elaborate collection of characters in all of literature. Each is drawn with such perfect clarity, and yet if you are not used to some character types, you may miss them.

One of my favorite characters is Jaques, of whom Hazlitt says "Jaques is the only purely contemplative character in Shakespeare. He thinks, and does nothing. His whole occupation is to amuse his mind, and he is totally regardless of his body and his fortunes. He is the prince of philosophical idlers; his only passion is thought; he sets no value upon anything but as it serves as food for reflection. He can suck melancholy out of a song, as a weasel sucks eggs'; the motley fool, 'who morals on the time', is the greatest prize he meets in the forest."

He even gives a thumbnail description of Hamlet which reveals that Hamlet is us, a variety of "everyman" who lives in our skin now and again.

I love old books and "near great" authors. This book exemplifies both. Haslett lived in the great age of English Poetry, and was a disciple of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and a friend of William Wordsworth And Charles Lamb. Haslett was a popularizer of literature, but his primary original work was as an essayist and critic, perhaps the best of his era. He was also adept as a writer of biographical notes on his contemporaries, which perfectly fits his objective in this work.

I did not need this for school or college, I just found it a handy reference guide to the characters of Shakespeare's plays.
