INTERESTING FACTS:
§ Gleyre was raised by an uncle in Lyons, France after the death of both of his parents.
§ Gleyre traveled for six years in Greece, Egypt, Nubia and Syria. He became sick twice, with ophthalmia and a high fever, and soon returned home to Lyons.
§ After recovering, Gleyre moved to Paris and opened his own studio.
§ When Delaroche closed his studio, he referred his students to Gleyre for instruction. Gleyre accepted and offered lessons twice a week without any fee or payment.
§ Gleyre’s students included; Alfred Sisley, James Whistler, Jean-Leon Gerome, Edward Poynter, Jean-Frédéric Bazille and Claude Monet.
