Présentation de l'éditeur

Jeff Resnick faces a new dilemma: someone is stalking his sister-in-law, Brenda, who fears that violence from protesters will escalate near the women’s clinic where she works. Or could the vandalism, threatening phone calls, and letters against her have come from her abusive ex-husband? Meanwhile, Jeff grapples with meeting his estranged father and the sister he never knew existed. Could Patty Resnick be the key to Brenda’s stalker? And what has that got to do with the death of his brother Richard’s colleague?

"The reader won’t find the time to discover a “psychic signature” in the pages of this book because it just sizzles hot, asking to be read in a single sitting!"
-- The Feathered Quill

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Intense and worthy of your attention. 7 octobre 2011

This is the 3rd book in the Jeff Resnick series I've read. A special thank-you to the author and publisher, Polaris Press, for issuing it in book form.

This series is not a cozy and does not pretend to be a cozy...but as a cozy lover I have been engrossed in this series from the start. Jeff Resnick has some serious health issues most of which stem from that horrific mugging and beating he endured at the start in "Murder On The Mind". Besides the health issues Jeff also has received the gift of a paranormal...is that a gift or a curse. His paranormal abilities make themselves known when least expected often throwing Jeff off balance in more ways than one.
The intense feelings Jeff experiences regarding relationships with others whether in his family or just friends are at time painful to read. I find myself wishing someone could relieve Jeff of his headaches and even his paranormal insight. In this installment of Jeff's life he feels the same. The insights he experiences of his brother(Richard) and Brenda(Richard's wife)are issues he can't deal with.

I appreciate the way the author brings me right into the picture from the first page on. My feelings are of my returning to Richard & Brenda's kitchen to sit down and share a cup of coffee. I am going to go out on a limb and say that the Jeff Resnick series is my favorite of this autor's series'.

A definite thumbs up for this 3rd installment in the Jeff Resnick series.

Having read the previous Jeff Resnick mysteries was eager to make his acquaintance once again and I was not disappointed, L L Bartlett takes you captive on the first page and doesn't let go until the last sentence. The pace was fast and descriptive without too much unnecessary embelishment, the author also manages to weave different threads into the story culminating in a tour de force ending. We learn more of the difficult upbringing of both Jeff and his half-brother Richard which adds colour and depth to these strong characters and the story. I do hope another mystery in this series isn't too long in being published as I am sure it will live up to its expections. If you haven't acquainted yourself with the works of L L Bartlett I recommend you do now.

I wanted more Jeff Resnick and boy did the author deliver with a bang! The characters that I love are back and again, Jeff is in the thick of things trying to protect his loved ones. Who is trying to harm Brenda? Will Jeff's ability be there for him? What about those dreams? All these questions kept me riveted to the pages until the last sentence. The author has a few surprises for us including an OMG! moment and the suspense was both terrifying and exhilarating. This is an awesome read and I can't wait to read the next Jeff Resnick story.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 This psychological thriller with a paranormal thread will keep the old wheels spinning trying to figure out the culprit! 17 juillet 2010

A few short months before, Jeff Resnick thought he had been an orphan, or so he thought. Sometimes he wished he still was, except perhaps for his half brother Richard. Dr. Richard Alpert if you wanted to get technical. He lived in a carriage house apartment on his property and had no complaints about living there. Richard and his wife Brenda were, well, as good as you're going to get for relatives. Headaches from a mugging that landed him in the hospital with a broken arm, a skull fracture and resulted in Richard getting shot, but that was all behind them now. What lay ahead seemed equally unsavory.

His father, Chester Resnick, just came out of the woodwork only to dredge up "thirty-two years of submerged anger." And the dying old geezer with a cannula up his nose brought along with a sister for him who may as well have had b-i-m-b-o written on her forehead. When she asked Jeff why Richard married that jiga . . . she didn't even have to finish that question before he want to hurl. He was psychic, but he could sense trash without even having to get within an inch of that broad. Lord knows, he'd seen enough of that sort at "The Whole Nine Yards," the neighborhood sports bar he worked at. There were no "nuclear scientists" on that side of the family for sure. Why didn't they just go away?

Jeff had his "share of peeing in soup cans" when he worked as a field agent for an insurance agency. He could sense that a deadly situation was coming on board quickly, but he wasn't quite sure what it was. He kept dreaming about his murdered ex, Shelley. It wasn't just her. There wasn't just one death, but "three unconnected deaths," that somehow had to connect, but how? Brenda was a nurse at the "Williamsville Women's Health Center" and things were starting to heat up like no tomorrow there. The nuts were coming out of the woodwork at that joint, including her ex Willie Morgan and macadamia nuts like Mr. Robert Linden, "Head of the Erie County Assembly of Life." With all his psychic ability, Resnick couldn't manage to connect three dots.

Then the letters began to arrive. No one showed them to Brenda because she'd flip. The first one said "YOU." The second one said "WILL." The third was a given. Things began to heat up quickly, but who was sending those letters? Who was writing that crapola on windshields at the clinic? Willie began to act threateningly when he attacked Richard saying, "I know about rich folk like you. Think you can shove everyone around--take what you want. You got money and now you got my woman." The dreams. The corpses. The protestors. A finger was being broken, an agonized scream rang out, and then Jeff began to connect those dots, but would he be able to get there in time before there was yet another corpse added to that dream?

This psychological thriller with a paranormal thread will keep the old wheels spinning trying to figure out the culprit. I've never read any books in this series, but this one can definitely stand alone. This tough, but somehow vulnerable psychic detective had just the right amount of edge to his personality to making him extremely appealing. Jeffrey Resnick was a loner whose clipped, slightly raucous demeanor, was the sort of guy who cares, but isn't going to let anyone know. Well, perhaps the reader will figure that one out quickly enough. The reader won't find the time to discover a "psychic signature" in the pages of this book because it just sizzles hot, asking to be read in a single sitting!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 "I didn't want her to see what I saw-her friend, torn apart, an exit wound the size of my fist in the center of her back." 21 août 2012

Eight months ago unemployed insurance investigator, widower Jeff Resnick is on his way home from hanging with his friends when he's waylaid by a couple of punks with baseball bats. Long story short, he's put into the hospital with a broken head and arm, a concussion, and his apartment is pillaged. Enter into the picture his long estranged, and wealthy physician half-brother Richard Alpert and his significant other, the African-American Brenda, whom he finally married in "Dead In Red". Also in that novel while still recuperating from his beating, Jeff has found work as a bartender for "The Whole Nine Yards", while Richard has found work at the University of Buffalo School of Medicine, and here Brenda is doing volunteer work at a local women's clinic.

While doing his volunteer work at the university, Richard finds out that Jeff's biological father, Chet Resnick, who abandoned Jeff when Jeff was a child, is still alive, but is well on the road to the end to his life. This understandably leads to mixed feelings in Jeff, and this will be compounded by Jeff finding out that he also has a half-sister, Patty, who is the apple of his estranged father's eye.

Because the woman's clinic will do some abortions, the now pregnant Brenda is being harassed by a bunch of self-righteous, glory seeking, anti-choice, compulsive pregnantists. And caught in the middle between Richard trying to get Jeff to reconcile with his lost side of his family, and Brenda's harassment, is Jeff trying to patch together his relationship with his on again and off again girlfriend Maggie Brennan, and deal with visions of a slow, sadistic death of an elderly man, and that of the possible death of Brenda's unborn child.

Then there is a terrorist attack on the clinic and Brenda's friend is murdered, and he finally meets his half-sister and finds her a selfish, bigoted, gold-digging bitch, who only wants to sleep with and steal Richard from Brenda. Into the mix is Brenda's long divorced, abusive, ex-husband Willie Morgan turns up, sent over by Brenda's relatives, who don't appreciate her marrying a white man. And what does he have to do with the shooting, if anything.

As usual, Jeff is trying, and getting better at it, to work out his issues with Richard, continues to go on long walks during which he eventually ends up turning to Buchenwald survivor, and Jeff's psychic mentor Sophie Leven when he needs counseling. Old schoolmate and reporter Sam Nielsen gets a bigger role when Jeff needs some research help. So with these two, all of the series regulars are back, and with this novel, we FINALLY find out just who Sophie is, or was, maybe. If you've read the previous books in this series, you will know what I mean.

"Cheated By Death" is self-published novel, and we can see why. This is an intricate, and often convoluted, serious mystery that deals with serious real-world issues in a non-sensationalistic manner. We get women's right to choose, black racism, white racism, murder, the death of a child, and a psychotic murderer who may or may not have anything to do with the right for a woman to have bodily autonomy.

But at its core, this is a novel about family issues. Jeff's relationship with Richard, Richard's with Jeff, Jeff's with his father and his graspy, greedy, cartoonish, and underdeveloped half-sister. It's no wonder that this novel had to be self-published, in doing so, Bartlett has been given, by herself, more freedom in exploring the serious side of some controversial subject matter. Adult subject matter, told in a non-sensationalistic manner, that couldn't be published by her previous two publishers, the more commercial Five Star and Harlequin book companies.

Nobody here is a superhero, nobody here is super smart, and everybody does understandably dumb things, and they all pay the price for it. This should have won Bartlett an award, as she makes most of today's bestselling thriller writers look like the sensationalistic, formula-driven hacks that they are. So if you're looking for something that is slickly written, professionally plotted, and different than the more commercial crap marketed by most companies, this is the book to read. Just remember, this is book three of four, so far, and while it stands alone, kinda, you really should read the first two books in this series to get the full impact of "Cheated By Death".

Oh yeah, and there's a Stephen King reference in that somebody orders flowers from the Castle Rock Florists.

For this site I have also reviewed the following Jeff Resnick books:

Jeff Resnick #1: Murder On The Mind (Five Star First Edition Mystery).
Jeff Resnick #2: Dead in Red (Five Star Mystery Series) (Five Star First Edition Mystery).
Jeff Resnick #3: Cheated By Death (A Jeff Resnick Mystery).
Jeff Resnick #4: Bound By Suggestion: The Jeff Resnick Mysteries.

Jeff Resnick's first published case "Cold Case" can be found in this anthology: Mystery in Mind, and as a Kindle here Cold Case (A Jeff Resnick Mystery), although it also makes up the first chapter of "Bound By Suggestion", and Jeff is also in the Kindle short stories Bah! Humbug (The Jeff Resnick Mysteries) and When The Spirit Moves You (The Jeff Resnick Mysteries).
