This film version of Chicago is a non-stop singing and dancing extravaganza. At a time when crimes of passion result in front page headlines, nightclub sensation Velma Kelly and spotlight-seeking Roxie Hart both find themselves sharing space on Chicago's famed Murderess Row!
Synopsis
Chicago anni '20. Vuoi diventare famosa nel mondo dello spettacolo? E' semplice, commetti un omicidio e finisci in galera, trovati un avvocato con una buona parlantina e amico dei giornalisti e il gioco è fatto: da semplice ballerina di fila puoi diventare una star del Vaudeville. E' quello che accade a Roxie Hart, illusa da un uomo che le promette di farla entrare nello showbiz dalla porta principale e che invece si rivela un imbroglione. Roxie lo uccide e viene incarcerata nella stessa cella di Velma Kelly, starlette osannata dalla stampa di Chicago - finita in prigione per l'omicidio di sua sorella e di suo marito, dopo aver scoperto una relazione tra i due. Grazie all'aiuto dell'avvocato Billy Fynn, più avvezzo alle pubbliche relazioni che alle arringhe in tribunale, Roxie guadagna terreno sui giornali fino a scalzare il successo di Velma. Ma si sa che il mondo è pieno di giovani carine pronte a tutto per raggiungere l'Olimpo, così Roxie e Velma si vedranno costrette a unire le loro forze contro la minaccia della pluriomicida Go-to-Hell Kitty.

The plot line by (Maurine Dallas Watkins) is a killer; it is all about the whimsical world of killing. Velma Kelly (Catherine Zeta-Jones) killed her husband and sister. Roxie Hart (Renée Zellweger) shoots her boyfriend Fred Cassely (Dominic West) dead. And a whole bevy of sleazy babes that killed their significant others. They kill a few songs. And the plot was never alive.
It is possible that the play may have had some redeeming social value. However by the time it was hacked up for this movie the only thing of value is the fast forward button. And again just because the movie has the appearance of a play does not give it any virtue.
If you do like murder and music then you may prefer "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" (1982)
The Phantom of the Opera [Blu-ray]
