En savoir plus sur l'auteur

"Bright and happy," "light and whimsical" have been the catch phrases attached to the writing and art of Sally Huss for over 30 years. Sweet images dance across all of Sally's creations, whether in the form of children's books, paintings, wallpaper, ceramics, baby bibs, purses, clothing, or her King Features Syndicated newspaper panel "Happy Musings."

Before graduating from USC with a degree in Fine Art in the 60's, Sally had already become a champion tennis player, having won the Wimbledon and U.S. Junior titles and been a Wimbledon semi-finalist in the Women's Division in both singles and doubles. Carrying both her brushes, pens, plus rackets in her hands, she continued to operate in two arenas. With her husband Marv Huss, former head of Advertising and Promotion for Hallmark Cards, they developed the renowned Aspen Club in Colorado, a luxury health spa and tennis facility. After that, they embarked on building a string of 26 Sally Huss Galleries across the country offering Sally's art, writings, and licensed products.
Through the galleries, Sally's creations have found their way into millions of offices, hotels, and homes, including those of Clint Eastwood, Kirk Douglas, Joel Gray, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and Mitt Romney.

Presently the Husses reside on an art ranch in Fallbrook, California, where Sally indulges herself in her life-long passion of writing and illustrating her own books. The majority of these books are for children, while others touch on her expertise as a tennis champion, and still others reveal her positive philosophy of life. Her creations are still "bright and happy, "light and whimsical" after all these years! www.sallyhuss.com

I picked this book up to have to read/share with my young nieces and nephews, and we've had fun with it. But, while using this book for them, my mind started thinking about the ways I could use this with my teenage students.

The lessons/messages in the book are INVALUABLE for small children, but, unfortunately many children don't get these messages in their younger years, and it becomes vital that they learn them in their teenage years. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm going to use some of these lessons with my teenage hard to reach students.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Fantastic way to encourage and reinforce positive human qualities! 11 décembre 2013

I am a Speech and Language Pathologist presently working at one elementary and one middle school in Huntington Beach, CA. I have been a Speech/Language Pathologist Consultant and as a Speech and Language Pathologist in public school districts in Michigan, Massachusetts and California for thirty years.
We are also certainly dealing with the hot topic of Bullying in a positive school-wide manner. I purchased this fabulous Boat Full of Animal Games (pdf file) and shared it with my fellow SLPsl. The crux of Sally's short stories is to identify with positive characteristics of the animals and incorporate them into our daily life.
Since children have a special connection with animals what a perfect way to embrace and teach these loving, positive and uplifting qualities.
Here is how I use it...Each week one of the animal stories is read and a discussion ensues. When my intern, assistant or I see a student or hears of a student doing something positive, they will are given an die cut of the animal of the week with the words pre-printed "You've been caught doing the lovely quality of... _____________________________." Just a great way to encourage and reinforce positive human qualities.
Thank you for your inspiration!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Good book for Teaching Good Behavior 5 décembre 2013

"This book has been a delight for my children. The games are simple and fun to play, as well as educational. We like the one about "being a bird" and making sweet sounds. If you have a group of kids, you know that they can make all kinds of sounds. I like the fact that the exercise/game makes a child aware of the sounds they make and the importance of how that sounds affects others. This is just one example, yet there are 30. We have fun using the book when we're on a trip. Games help and these games help in many ways."

I have read many of the Sally Huss books, but this one takes her work a step farther by showing children how to put the lessons into practice. This book contains thirty animal games which allow a child to play while developing skills in kindness, gratitude, appreciation, goodness, patience, and truthfulness. We have all heard the expression, “ A happy life makes a happy wife.” Huss believes the same applies to children; by creating happy children we will build cooperative communities of future happy adults putting these virtues to good use worldwide.

There are thirty games featuring different animals; they can be divided according to time, virtue or animal preference. Each of them provide interactive questions for the child and then create a scenario in which to imagine and act the game out. Here is one example: #4 The Cat Game. Huss points out one of the best qualities of a cat is how it cleans up after itself. Then she gives the child reasons why cleaning up is a good thing and how good it makes you feel. Next she presents the steps in playing the game. The child is asked to make a mess at different times of the day and then clean up seven times. At the end of the day, think of what has been done and how much you have learned. As time goes on, be sure to remind yourself how happy your success has made you.

Each of these games is so cleverly crafted that it is hard to choose. Let me give another example. In #16 The Rabbit Game, the child learns that a rabbit’s long ears are for listening as well as hearing. He must be alert for danger. The child is asked how many times must he hear something before he pays attention. Listening is fun because when we listen we learn new things. Instructions are to really listen at least five times when parents, teachers, siblings or friends speak to you. Then put your rabbit friend on your animal boat and both he and you will be happy listeners.

As a child moves through the book, he will eventually have filled his boat with thirty animals and all their good character traits. A child will have learned how to assimilate their good traits and apply them to everyday life situations making each day a happier experience for the child and those around him. These games are fun to play, and parents or teachers may choose to zero in on those qualities which need the most reinforcement. Highly recommend the book, particularly for children in the five to eight age group.

Sally's Boat Full of Animals was the first product I purchased. If all of us could embrace the animals' qualities that are entertained in each short stories, what a more beautiful world we would see! I used Sally's Boat Full of Animals every week; one student chose an animal from the list of 30. We read the story aloud and when I saw a child incorporating that quality, I placed his/her name of an Ellison die cut of the animal. My favorite is the dolphin and the lovely story about its smile. People believe the dolphin to be approachable and friendly and treat him that way. Smile at others and you might just get a smile in return. What a way to empower and affirm the goodness in children. Parents can easily use and adapt these stories with their own children.
