Everything Emma Thompson owns fits in a suitcase she moves from one roach infested motel to another. She and Jake, her five year old son who can see the future, are running from the men intent on taking him. Emma will do anything to protect him even when it means accepting the help of a stranger named Will. Jake insists she needs Will, but Emma’s never needed help before. And even though she’s learned to trust her son, it doesn’t mean she trusts Will.

Mercenary Will Davenport lives in the moment. Hauling Emma to South Dakota should have been an easy job, but his employer neglected to tell him about Emma’s freaky son and the gunmen hot on her trail. Instinct tells him this job is trouble, but nothing can prepare him for Jake’s proclamation that Will is The Chosen One, who must protect Emma from the men hunting her power. A power she doesn't know she has.

Will protects Emma and Jake on a cross-country chase from the men pursuing them, while struggling with memories from his past, his apprehension of Jake, and his growing attraction to Emma. Will’s overwhelming urge to protect Emma surprises him, especially since it has nothing to do with his paycheck and possibly everything to do with the tattoo Jake branded on his arm. Rich and powerful men are desperate to capture Emma, and Will must discover why before it's too late.

After reading a number of the negative reviews, I was hesitant to buy it. However, it still sounded interesting so I read the sample and that led me to get the full book. I am very glad I did. The book is a good read with good character development and significant suspense.

One or 2 reviews was very critical of the use of the F... words (F... and F...ing) which occur on average about 2 times per chapter. Contrary to the one review, they are not in front of the child that often and if you live in the real world, the phrases they are used with are actually very common (i.e. What the F...?). Although I do not use the word myself, it IS the way a large portion of the population speaks and and sounded perfectly natural in its use throughout the book.

As far as the story jumping back and forth between the thoughts of the main characters, each view DID contribute to the plot development and even more so to the character development.

There was a section of the book that did have quite a bit of sex involved (although not what I would consider graphic - much less so than a typical romance novel), but it was significant to the development of the characters and their relationship with each other as well as how it fit in with their past.

In summary, if you have grown up in a sheltered environment, do not read this book (it might offend your sensibilities). Likewise, I would not recommend it for pre-teens. However, if you don't mind a book that reflects realistic personalities, I highly recommend this read!

I just finished it and am now getting the next book in the series that I am looking forward to reading (thankfully it is already available so I don't have to wait).

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Strong, driving narrative makes it a nail-biting speed read 4 octobre 2011

Before I read Chosen, I read a guest blog by the author who described how the idea for Chosen's paranomal element came to her. The special connection between the three main characters is richly imagined. But many paranomal books veer off-course because they spend so much time on the paranormal elements themselves that the plot gets lost. Not the case for Chosen - it's fast-paced, intense and carefully crafted to keep readers focused on the truly human struggle that's happening. My only regret is discovering this book before all of the Chosen series has been released, so I'm DYING to know what happens next, in Hunted. Great suspense!

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Exciting plot, weak protagonist 19 juin 2012

Sadly, Chosen did not resonate with me. It's an exciting premise: A woman and her young child on the run a powerful, mysterious enemy. Car chases, gun fights, men in black, espionage. It had all the makings of a great story, but there were a few things that really irked me.

On the positive side: I did enjoy Wil. He was snarky, sexy, and fun. I didn't trust him at first, but he grew into an amazing, multidimensional character.

The sex scenes between him and Emma were very well done, and unquestionably steamy. ; )

The story definitely moves, and managed to keep me interested. I loved the mystery, the prophetic elements, and the intensity of everything. I found myself biting my nails and staying up late to finish.

Where the story lost me was all on Emma and her relationship with Jake.

My biggest complaint: A four year old child called the shots and made all the major decisions for the first 50% of the book. "Why was she taking orders from a five-year-old?" Emma asks herself this very question at one point in the book, and I found myself asking the same thing. Jake doesn't listen to Emma at all - but she does everything he tells her to do, which drove me nuts. I mean, I know some kids are stubborn, but it seems Jake has no respect for her. She constantly tries telling him to do things, and he flippantly ignores her and does whatever he wants. Instead of dealing with this rebellion with some sort of disciplinary action, she either casually ignores it, blatantly caves to his whims, or crosses her arms and sulks. She's completely a victim to the whims of her child.

He's FIVE YEARS OLD lady - I mean come on!

There is a moment in the story where big, bad, evil things happen. Instead of dealing with these things, Emma goes completely catatonic, putting herself those with her in danger. She refuses to run, or fight. Instead she makes the mature choice, and sits down on the ground weeping and wailing, giving away her position to everyone hunting her. In her situation I would be heart broken, but more importantly, I'd be angry. Big, BAD things happened! Where's the righteous anger, the need for vengeance? As people, our true mettle is revealed in hardships. We are defined by how we deal with things when life pulls the rug out from underneath us. It's in those times that the true strength of our souls is revealed. Emma proved conclusively that she has no strength of spirit. She's a bendable reed, and not worth the ink her story is written in.

Emma's general lack of backbone made me strongly disliked her character. She was weak, and acted like a child so much of the book. She spent the first half of the book bitchy, sulky, and ineffectual, completely unable to set boundaries for her son. She spent the last half of the book falling apart and needing others (Wil) to save her.

Beyond the weak characters, the story was also rife with plot holes, inconsistencies, and illogical story elements.

The great thing about Chosen is it's pace and plot. Despite my complaints with it - I finished the book in one day, and there wasn't a single time I felt bored. Annoyed yes, bored no. I am curious to know what happens to Jake and Wil, but I'm not sure I'll read more in the series.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 If you have things to do, do not start this book 3 mars 2012

Seriously, what can I say that countless other people haven't already? Once you start reading this book, you won't be able to stop. You will take it with you everywhere you go. So, if you have something important you need to do, like work or making dinner, don't start the book until you can dedicated the next day or two, to finishing it.

Don't say, oh I'll just read the first chapter and stop. You won't be able to because it starts off with a bang and doesn't let up. Ever. It just keeps going until you get to the last page, and you are thinking, how is this possibly the last page? Why is this the last page? Then you realize there's a sequel, and poof, there go 2 more days of your life.

The story itself is about Emma, Mom on the run, her son, and Will. The majority of the book is just the three of them running from the bad men who want Jake. Lesser authors might make this very dull, but there isn't a dull moment between these characters. Electricity runs trough every encounter Emma and Will have and you practically want to scream, just kiss him already for the love of...

The characters are real. Emma has been on the run for years, protecting her little boy. She's everything you expect her to be. She's standoffish, at times feels like she's failing Jake (even when she isn't.) She's tired. She desperately needs someone to take care of her for awhile, to carry the burden, but can't even think these things to herself, let alone out loud. It's as real as it gets.

Jake is a precocious little boy who seems wise beyond his five years. But, I'm pretty sure having visions of the men who want to kill you, seeing the future, and being on the run with your Mom probably does that to a person. Maybe that's just me.

And Will has his own secrets, his own agenda. He still is very relate able, and as his resolves begin to falter, you will root for him to make the right decisions, all the while thinking 'this guy is smoking hot'. Seriously.

And there's a twist at the end that was perfect. You'll be biting your nails wondering what's going to happen, if the right choices were made, and just when you think the jig is up...

"Good, bad, they're just words. Who's to decide what is good or bad? In the end, only the consequences matter." -Jake from Chosen by Denise Grover Swank

Chosen is a book that I would re-read. It grabbed me from the first chapter and made it nearly impossible for me to put it down. I found myself taking my kindle with me everywhere just to continue the story. (and I mean everywhere, including my `Mommy hiding spot' aka the bathroom) The characters were well written and had a depth that many stories these days seem to lack. In the emerging world of e-books you never know what kind of book you are going to get. This was a refreshing surprise of a well written, mystifying story line. The story plot seemed predictable at first, but just when I thought I knew where it was going I was pleasantly surprised to discover that in fact, I didn't have it all figured out. With secret societies, paranormal powers, "Bad Men" chasing the characters throughout the book, and romance that was well written and didn't overpower the paranormal/ suspense of the book but rather lent another dimension to the story, it was definitely worth the read.

The struggle between good and bad was full on, not only in general regards to the plot, but within the characters as well. Each character was tortured by choices they had made or would have to make and by the battle to survive. Sometimes it was about surviving the "bad men" chasing them, other times it was about surviving their own fears and thoughts.

Emma was a character that was easy to empathize with. Un-trusting, guarded, exhausted from being on the run with her 5 year old son for 3 years, worried that she wasn't a good mother and that she wouldn't protect her son, Jake, from the "Bad Men". Her character was multi-dimensional and enjoyable to be on the wild ride with. Her snarky whit, resolve, and refusal to take crap from anyone-including Will had me smiling and laughing out loud.
Despite Will's secret intentions regarding Emma and Jake, it was impossible for me to dislike him. I enjoyed watching him develop and re-connect with the emotions he had long ago locked away, even developing a sense of protection over a boy he originally viewed as a complication. He and Emma's character had some hilarious banter and were fun to watch. He was everything I like in a Hero- Strong, brave, secretive, sarcastic, even a bit of a jackass at times. He had a wit that was entertaining from beginning to end.

Jake's character was easy to like and the mystery surrounding his "powers" intrigued me. I found myself hoping to get to a place where I would understand why he had them, how he got them, what it meant, etc. Obviously the mystery surrounding him was part of what made this such a quick read. He did seem a bit mature for a 5 year old, but with the life he was dealt, the lack of other children to be around, his mother as his only real socialization, and the things he'd been through, I imagine that would cause any child to be more mature.

The action in Chosen was fast paced and never disappointed. This combined with the mystery of why the "bad men" were chasing them made this a smooth quick read. I found myself ordering the 2nd book off Amazon just minutes after finishing this one. If you enjoy urban paranormal's with just the right slash of romance, I recommend getting this book . It won't disappoint.
