Great Little Book 9 février 2011
Par John Matlock - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
The expansion of the capabilities that the Internet brings, especially when combined with high bandwidth connections continues to fuel the creative ideas of a bunch of very talented people. This book talks about Cisco's expansion of unified messaging (integrated voicemail, e-mail, short message service, and fax) with real time communication services such as instant messaging, presence information, IP telephony, video conferencing, call control and speech control. The book is aimed at a fairly high level overview of the system to provide the supporting engineer with an understanding of the entire procedure. Beyond the concepts it covers from installation to trouble shooting.

The intent of Cisco® Unified Presence is to improve productivity. Building on the migration to IP telephony and the deployment of Cisco Unified Communications environments, it helps people find each other faster, solve problems more quickly, pursue opportunities with more agility, and increase customer satisfaction.

The book explains the concepts behind Unified Presence, the technologies involved, their interdependencies, and how to troubleshoot them. The authors support their discussions of concepts and techniques with many sample applications, guiding network professionals to real-world mastery even if they have never used presence technologies.
Cisco Unified Presence Fundamentals Review 14 février 2012

I used this book to prepare for part of the 642-467 CAPPS exam. This book covers Presence from all spectrums. The book begins with the first two chapters explaining the overview and purpose of Presence. At Chapter 3, it provides an in-depth install guide with screenshots for nearly every step of the way. Chapters 4-7 address configuration aspects within CUCM, CUP and the CUPC client. Chapter 8 provides real world examples of how utilizing Presence in vertical markets can be beneficial to employees in the Healthcare, Public Sector, and Retail industries. Chapter 9 is by far the most useful. It is a troubleshooting guide for some of the most common issues experienced within Presence with a list of steps to quickly troubleshoot and remedy the issue.

Overall, I was impressed with this book. It presented a wealth of knowledge without being too overwhelming in a short 270 page book.

One advantage of the Cisco product described by the book is the migration from using Microsoft operating system to linux. Presumably in part because of no licensing fees and hence a lower cost to Cisco. Whether this is in part passed on to the customer is unknown, but possibly also an advantage to you.

Another feature is that an SDK is available for customers who use the Application Extension Platform. The SDK takes advantage of the relative ease of developing under linux. For example, you can install and use free third party applications to improve your coding efforts for AXP. While some might also be available for a Microsoft OS, there should be more under linux.

The Unified Presence offers the nice property of availability. This shows the status of a user as "online, offline, idle, busy or away". It ensures that, at least ideally, an incoming message does not interrupt its recipient. Vital because it has been found that wetware [you] context switching is very deleterious to an efficient focusing on the immediate task at hand. Despite the many people who think otherwise, Unified Presence can improve your productivity at hard tasks.

Single Number Reach is another advantage of the new product. It avoids the clumsy need by a caller to know several of your phone numbers [office landline, cellphone, softphone] and then to have to ring each of these in turn, when you fail to answer. Instead, you now have a SNR. This marches us towards the context where a URI [Universal Resource Indicator] can also refer to a person, instead of just a software topic or domain.
