Présentation de l'éditeur

A Clear Mirror is the autobiographical account of a saint, a genius, a virtuoso who has granted readers what is most rare in personal accounts: full access to his incredible inner life. Dudjom Lingpa was a 19th century Tibetan visionary and Great Perfection master whose legacy of meditation teachings has swept across the world since his lifetime, due in part to the international presence of his re-incarnate successor, His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche. Although the genre of biography is quite common in Tibetan Buddhism, this is unlike to anything yet translated into English.
This is exactly what Dudjom Lingpa does in his trilogy of auto-biographies. Although he was brilliantly successful in his multi-faceted career as a teacher to incalculable remarkable disciples, a prolific writer with at least twenty-one extant volumes of composition that are still studied around the world, and a Treasure revealer in the teaching system unique to tantric Buddhism, his stories offer us something else. In this book we are shown the very thing that high lamas regard as most sacred and intimate: spiritual evolution via the lens of inner-most visionary life, cinematic in scope, filled with fascinating beings, both divine and demonic. Dudjom Lingpa grants readers access to his enlightenment process—from learning how to meditate up to the highest tantric practices—as only he could have experienced it. This book, filled with vivid and fascinating visions and dreamscapes, is replete with adventure as well as everyday meditation advice. Anyone interested in a revolutionary outlook on personal transformation will enjoy and benefit from these stories.

Aside from some wonderful and engrossing introductory and explanatory notes by the editor, this book consists of one lengthy "spiritual autobiography" and two shorter ones. The author, Tibetan terton or "treasure revealer" Dudjom Lingpa died only 108 years ago, and it seems in that relatively short time during our modern era that there has been little opportunity to embellish or otherwise corrupt DL's original words. I mention that because aside from a very few occasional cues - such as being shot at by bandits! - you would not know that this wasn't written by, say, a disciple of Padmasambhava's in the 9th century...which, not so surprisingly, is said to be one of his earlier incarnations. It's remarkable how little changed in the Tibetan countryside during those 1000 years (cattle rustling must be an eternal problem). Even less has changed in the terton world: the visions, physical run-ins and vidid dreams he writes about in colorful detail seem straight out of 9th century casting....actually the cast of characters in this book IS out of the 9th century.

Having read a number of books in this genre, beginning many years ago with Autobiography of a Yogi, I was expecting to learn a great deal about DL's life. However, there is little about his worldly life here except to the degree that occasional details erupt through the myriad of incredible spiritual visions he's had since the age of 3 (the exception being Chapter 1, in which we are treated to the geneology of Tibetan clans back to ancient times). Nor is the book a collection of his writings, the highly regarded Dudjom Tersar, which is available elsewhere for those interested.

That said, and armed with misconceptions about what to expect, I confess to at first being a bit irritated by the chapter after chapter reporting of, for example, "when I was 10 in the year of the Dragon, Dorje Lepka rode up to me on a lion and told me to meet a particular lama. Then he vanished." What might follow that matter-of-fact statement are the details of the subsequent miraculous journeys, predictions and teachings, objects and fascinating beings he encountered. Many of these encounters led to the discovery of physical objects in the strangest of places, or the revelation of teachings that were injected directly into his mind (which near the end of his life he was encouraged to write down). These formed the body of work he left behind. As he gets older, he slowly acquires students and disciples - the details of many of them were predicted years in advance in meetings with various Buddhas, dakinis, and other beings.

But this is what he actually experienced 150 years ago... not medieval mythology. And more than a few of his highly positioned, well regarded leading contemporaries took this unaffiliated and uncredentialed yogi in as one of their own. In the hierarchy of organized Tibetan religion, that was a very big deal.

Ultimately, spending time with this book is an opportunity to share these incredible experiences with DL himself: it's an invitation to ride shotgun on these wild journeys, and it's not easy. But for those willing to try to absorb and experience what is going on, it may be an opportunity have your perspective shifted, and to break free of so many restrictions we put on ourselves.

On pure literary merits, I might rate this book three stars: Dudjom Lingpa clearly did not go to Harvard....the work could be construed as blindly antireductionist, and derivative. But, thankfully, that is not the point. Reading this book as a treasure itself, it is beyond stars. And that, of course, is something you have to experience for yourself.

UPDATE 2/11/2012: The perfect complement to this book. Just finished reading "Buddhahood Without Meditation" (it helps to know what that means in an atiyoga sense), by Dudjom Lingpa. The reviews of that book here are right-on - it is a Dzogchen treasure, a compendium of trekchod, techniques and a blast of enthusiasm for going through life in a state a pure awareness. If "A Clear Mirror" comes across as fantastical, BWM is the complete opposite....it is DL sounding like a modern psychotherapist, no kidding. What a guy he must have been. The conversations he describes in "Clear Mirror" with Longchenpa, Orgyen Tsokye, Ekajati and Vajradhara recur in BWM, but the modern talk is direct and to the point. If you like your primordial gods and dakinis served straight-up, you may wish to read Clear Mirror first, but they are equally incredible in BWM's 21st century garb.

I just received this book in India and it is really a terrific book. All of the portions at the beginning are informative and helpful. The translations themselves are very well written and done so in very straightforward English. The text themselves are really fascinating to read and contain an incredible amount of really helpful advice and teachings on a variety of topics especially meditation. Thanks very much to the translator and the publisher. Well done a very valuable book.
