Feng WHAT?

I once met a woman who set off traveling around the planet with little more than the ticket to her first destination in her pocket, but she had one extraordinary skill--the ability to read people's palms--and no matter where she went, she was never short of a place to sleep or food to eat. She would pick a local restaurant or hotel, meet the manager, and offer to do palm readings for guests in return for food, shelter, or a small wage. When I met her she had been doing this for three years, had already visited more than a dozen countries, and was having the time of her life.

I have found that Feng Shui has this same universal appeal. When people discover how much their home can affect them, for better or for worse, they are usually fascinated to learn more.

Feng Shui

The rising popularity of Feng Shui in recent years has been extraordinary. I first discovered a passion for working with energy in buildings in the late 1970s and began teaching Feng Shui publicly in 1993. When people asked me then what I did for a living and I told them, their usual response was a puzzled look and a "Feng WHAT?" Nowadays they usually nod wisely and the conversation simply glides on. Just about everyone seems to have heard something about it these days.

Feng Shui is the art of balancing and harmonizing the flow of natural energies in our surroundings to create beneficial effects in our lives. These natural energy flows were well known and understood by the ancients, and knowledge of them still exists in some cultures today. In Bali, for example, which is my home for half of each year, the people still live in total harmony with both the physical, seen world and the ethereal, unseen world of invisible energies. Daily offerings at every household shrine throughout the land and an endless procession of beautiful, powerful, and very highly evolved ceremonies in the island's twenty thousand communal temples ensures that balance and harmony is maintained. This, to me, is Feng Shui at its best--not just a set of principles applied to an individual building for a specific result but a whole island of 3 million people in tune with the sacredness of the land and living Feng Shui as a complete way of life.

My Approach to Feng Shui

My own approach to Feng Shui is rather different from that of other practitioners because I work directly with the energy of each space. Over a twenty-year period, I have developed the ability to see, hear, smell, taste, and sense energy in enhanced ways, so to begin a consultation the first thing I usually do is go around the entire inside perimeter of the building, taking an energy reading with my hands. The history of events is recorded in the walls and furniture in the form of subtle electromagnetic imprints, and through reading and interpreting these, I can detect pretty much everything of significance that has ever happened there. Traumatic or repetitive events are embedded the most deeply and have a correspondingly greater effect on present-day occupants. I am also able to find areas where the energy in the building has become stuck and determine what needs to be done to improve its flow.

Whenever I come across clutter, its energy field is unmistakable. It presents an obstacle to the flow of energy and has an unpleasant, sticky, unclean feel to it, as if I'm moving my hands through unseen cobwebs. This is what first made me realize that clutter causes problems in people's lives. It also has a distinctive, pervasive, musty odor that I can smell if I walk into someone's home, even if the clutter is hidden away from sight. Actually, if I tune in, I can also smell it in a person's aura (the energy field around the body) if he or she stands near me, because the aura becomes imbued with the smell of it. But don't worry about this if you ever meet me in person--there is so much clutter in the world that I don't tune in this way too often!

The good news is that after clearing clutter, this unwholesome, stagnant energy and accompanying odor quickly disappears.

The Feng Shui Bagua

One of the most interesting aspects of Feng Shui, and one that I will be focusing on a great deal in this book, is the Feng Shui "bagua" grid (see Chapter 8 for a simplified diagram and further information). This can be used to locate where each aspect of your life is found in any building you occupy.

For example, there is an area in your home to do with prosperity. Many people read about Feng Shui or attend a workshop on the subject, get very excited about it, and then rush to put it into practice without realizing they need to clear their clutter first. They hear they can hang a mirror in their prosperity corner to attract more wealth. But what if that area is cluttered with junk? Sadly, putting a mirror there is more likely to double their financial problems than resolve them.

This book focuses on just this one aspect of Feng Shui--clearing clutter--that is so vital to its successful application. It is the first book ever to explore this subject in depth in this context, and is intended as an ideal starter for those new to Feng Shui and an invaluable tool for those who have studied it for a while.

Throughout this book I refer mostly to applying the information around your home, but of course it can be used equally effectively in your workplace and any other building you occupy.

Don't let clutter ruin your life !! Let Karen help you !! 18 mai 1999
Par Un client - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
This book has changed my life!!It is a must for anyone who has trouble keeping clutter under control!I am a reformed clutterholic!! I have been a hoarder my whole life since high school, but after karen explained everything with so much sense and understanding, its like she broke an evil spell. I have now almost clutter cleared my entire 4 bedroom house and I have never felt so free, happy and at peace with myself. Now instead of dreading my house because it is so messy,I love it. I am a Law graduate, a skeptic but I tell your this book really works. Since clutter clearing,I feel happier, my mind is clearer and my relationships have improved. Everything karen says in the book is true. She makes you laugh and then you want to clean up your mess. You can feel like she really cares about you. Her book helped me so much I even went to a seminar she held in London!!My husband was so shocked by the change in me he started reading the book and even went to the seminar with me. People who I have passed this book onto have all benefited. If junk and clutter has been haunting your life for long enough, then take action now...let Karen help you, it will be one of the best things you have ever done !!

great (except for the "internal cleansing" chapter) 19 décembre 1999
Par Un client - Publié sur Amazon.com

Being a clutterholic who keeps a lot of stuff "just in case" and for memory's sake (like 2nd grade report cards), this book was truly motivational and much of it made sense (like keeping stuff "just in case" means that not only are we cluttering the house for ourselves, we're also keeping things for people we haven't even met yet!).
Since reading the book, my husband and I have cleared out TONS of stuff in the house! We've had yard sales and donated a lot to the Salvation Army and Goodwill, and the rooms that have been "decluttered" are cleaner and more restful. Plus, with the goal of getting down to just the things we need, love, or use, we've been able to get rid of tacky stuff that we hung onto for no good reason, and stuff that we weren't using. The great thing is that after reading the book I felt selfish for keeping all the clutter- now I feel like I'm helping out by giving my "thin clothes" to people who could wear them before they go out of style. Plus I'm not depressed looking at clothes that I've inadvertantly outgrown. Or, for those gifts you get that you don't really love but feel obligated to keep, you feel better about giving them away because you know it doesn't mean you don't appreciate the thought and keeping it when you don't like it makes the whole thing worse.
I agree that the whole section on colon cleansing is a big wacky and although I read it the first time, I personally skipped over that the second time I read the book (it's the kind of book you can read every time you want a "pep talk" to clean). I recommended the book to my mom and my brother and mom keeps mentioning how dangerous the colon cleansing part could be, but in my mind that was a small section of the book and one that I didn't give much thought to because I'm more concerned with a clean, clutter-free house. So I wouldn't dismiss the book because of one small section. The rest of it, taken with a grain of salt, is the ONLY book I've read that has actually motivated me to DO something and get rid of the clutter! And honestly, we feel so much better about the house now. We still have work to do, but at least I don't feel like I'm living in a junkyard anymore!

This book finally helped us de-clutter 27 mars 2001
Par Joanna Daneman - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
I read five books last year on de-cluttering. None of them really helped us. Turns out we collect clutter for entirely different reasons. Books that try to deal with "personality" just didn't seem to work for us. Books that more or less said "get over it" also didn't work. But we have to pare down because we are going to move twice in the next two years (ugh.)
The secret to "Clear Your Clutter With Feng Shui" was to find why we both were keeping some things. (There is a section with helpful questions about why you keep stuff, such as inheriting it, sentimental feelings, habits, family habits, and even grief.) In our case, a friend from childhood and a parent had both died within two years and this caused a desire to cling to a lot of old things.
Excess clutter is thought to sap energy. It certainly saps concentration and gathers asthma-inducing dust. Now our apartment looks better, breathes better and yes, smells fresher and thanks to this book. First one I've ever read that could help two different people living together because it deals with the individual motivations behind the junk they keep.

This book will change your life 29 novembre 2000
Par Heather White - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
This book changed my life, and I don't say that lightly . . . I can count on one hand the authors I'd say that of, and Karen Kingston is one of them.
I too have loaned or recommended this book to all my friends, and read it several times myself. At Thanksgiving dinner I heard about someone who was having a tough time, and I mailed her a copy of this book over the weekend. I thought it was the single most helpful thing I could do (in the hierarchy of collectors, she must be near the top). It really is true--when you sort out your stuff, you sort out your life. Having lots of clutter functions exactly as a millstone around your neck would.
As others said, I have read many books on this topic, looking for something that would light a fire under me. This is the only one that ever helped me. It is every bit as motivational as others have said. You will likely stay up most of the night you read it clearing clutter--and you'll feel and be better for doing it. Not only has it helped me clear stuff dating back even to childhood, but it's helped me clear people out of my life who didn't need to be there, and it's taken away my urge to shop for and collect new stuff. I still have collections of lovely and useful things. I just no longer feel the need to accumulate, and I have scaled back somewhat.
A note . . . Karen recommends not examining things too carefully before tossing. I am going through things a bit slower than she recommends (and have found my car title and 2 copies of my birth certificate, among other useful things :), but I've found this actually quite helpful. In reading my old letters, diaries, etc., I've been able to identify old patterns still at play in my life today. It made me so mad to see how the more things changed, the more they stayed the same, that I took immediate steps in my life today to end the patterns. So instead of dumping your boxes of papers wholesale, you may want to look at the items that could give you valuable insight. What this book did for me is completely remove the urge to keep anything that no longer holds real value for me. I immediately cleared out a bunch of books and cassettes that had either never had any value for me, or no longer did.
As far as the "not really feng shui" complaint . . . Karen states, and I absolutely believe she is right, that clutter clearing is the most important part of feng shui, and that her book is a supplement to the vast body of feng shui books available everywhere that never give specific instructions on this point. I don't know how anyone could miss this and expect anything else. Anyone in this category should have his/her shopping license revoked :) Since feng shui is about energy flowing, and it certainly can't flow through a space packed tight with clutter, there is no better place to start than this book.
Sure, there are a few things in the book that are a bit overwrought--for example, she fleetingly refers to lots of evidence that my clearing my clutter can help my ancestors! I'd love to know what that evidence is! But come on, folks, you buy a book with "feng shui" in the title . . . if the author's not stranger than you are, she's just not doing her job.
As far as the clearing your body part that has so many people freaked out . . . I ordered some herbs, used them in moderation, and found them to be helpful.
I can't recommend this book highly enough. I only wish I'd had it as soon as I reached the age of reason (it's been awhile :) but better late than never.

Short on Feng Shui, But Long On Helpfulness 18 novembre 2001
Par Marchez Vite - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
I read this book when I was about two-thirds of the way through de-cluttering my home. What I read in Kingston's book reinforced what I had learned in the process and continues to help me with de-cluttering.
Probably the most helpful lesson in this book is Kingston's point of view that clutter is not just about stuff, but rather it is only an external representation of our state of mind. If we are stuck, afraid, or otherwise confused, we will recreate this in our surroundings with our possessions.
What follows from this is that (a) once we bring order to our personal issues, it's easier to de-clutter or avoid clutter, or (b) making changes in our environment will necessarily cause us to feel differently and act differently. Kingston says that clutter blocks energy, and that de-cluttering creates energy.
There's actually very little feng shui philosophy in this book, which worked well for me. My personal goal is de-cluttering, not learning feng shui. But the feng shui principles of "chi" (energy) are helpful metaphors for me to use in examining my own packrat tendencies.
The book is brief but substantive, an easy read that's quite motivating and helpful.
