Description de l'ouvrage

The original CliffsNotes study guides offer expert commentary on major themes, plots, characters, literary devices, and historical background. The latest generation of titles in this series also feature glossaries and visual elements that complement the classic, familiar format.

In CliffsNotes on The Things They Carried, you discover Tim O'Brien's powerful and innovative novel about the experiences of foot soldiers during and after the Vietnam War. Drawing largely on his own experiences during the war, the author creates a fictional protagonist who shares the author's own name, and allows this fictional "Tim O'Brien" to relate disturbing war stories as he creates an indictment against the wastefulness of war.

Chapter summaries and commentaries take you through Tim O'Brien's very personal journey. Critical essays give you insight into the novel's historical context, the novel's narrative structure, and the theme of loss of innocence. Other features that help you study include

  • Character analyses of the main characters
  • A character map that graphically illustrates the relationships among the characters
  • A section on the life and background of Tim O'Brien
  • A review section that tests your knowledge
  • A Resource Center full of books, articles, films, and Internet sites

Classic literature or modern modern-day treasure — you'll understand it all with expert information and insight from CliffsNotes study guides.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great study aid 20 février 2002

Cliff's notes once again delivers as a fantastic study aid. By no means should you use this as a replacement for the book. O'Brien has emerged as one of the greatest modern writers on the subject of war, and it would be a pity to overlook his writing. But if you are looking for help to write a paper on the topic, or just curious to discover more about the underlying meaning of the novel, don't hesitate to buy Cliff's Notes.

I read the novel & wanted to review notes for study purposes. I am shocked these made it into Cliffs Notes, that is how poorly written I find this to be, and there are errors, such as referencing Johnny Cross instead of Jimmy Cross. I also believe this is missing obvious references in favor of obscure, complicated ones. Author has managed to write in circles, with no thought to clarity or to actually making a clear point. I have not been able to slog through this. Fortunately, the book was much easier to enjoy and to read.
Skip this Cliffs Notes. Not only is it poorly written but it misses the point entirely. NOT HELPFUL, quite the opposite.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Found this, and at first, I wasn't happy 28 juin 2013

This is an age of idiots. Back when I was one, a freshman in 1969, I discovered Cliff Notes. Since I was attending Briar Cliff College, WTF did I know, it might have been a study aid produced by the faculty. (God knows they must wonder when high school seniors haven't read any Steinbeck or studied history, apart from the Crusades and Manifest Destiny, so THEY DON'T READ FOR PLEASURE. K-12 saw to that. Hell, they don't READ period.)

The Things They Carried doesn't need s synopsis. YOU DO, to get you to step out of the electronic social whirl and soak up some Real Life. Since you missed Vietnam, read this. It's simple and readable, the real life. Students are still retching and barfing up Silas Marner, so naturally they're suspicious. I read this Cliff Notes version and recommend it to everyone. To have read the book, though, and to answer in the affirmative when asked, read The Things They Carried. I met Tim O'Brien in the Twin Cities, where we were both signing books. He earned your attention, and mine. Do read his book.

I really liked the definitions of vocabulary words at the end of each chapter summary. The character analyses were very helpful, plus the critical essays at the end.
