Biographie de l'auteur

Michael has been climbing alpine rock and ice routes for twenty years, including many first ascents in Alaska, British Columbia, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. He has appeared in Alpinist, Climbing, Rock & Ice, and U.K.’s Climber magazines for his first ascents and climbing accomplishments. He was the recipient of the 2006 Fred Beckey Award for several bold first ascents, including what was called “the most significant climb [in the Pacific Northwest] in the past 50 years,” on the East Face of Mox Peak, just days after completing a Grade 6 first ascent on the other side of the range. When Michael isn’t climbing, skiing, mountain biking, or running, he has worked at several rehabilitation clinics, at the University of Utah sequencing and analyzing DNA of infectious & esoteric diseases, as an advisor for insurance companies and the Affordable Care Act, and as a mountain guide for Wasatch Mountain Adventures (formerly Exum Utah). Dr. Layton received his Doctor of Chiropractic from Western States Chiropractic College in Portland, OR and received his Bachelor’s in Exercise Science from Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA. Michael has also been invited to attend Stony Brook University’s class of 2016 Masters of Science Physician Assistant Program in Long Island, NY. Michael is happily married to his amazing, intelligent, & beautiful favorite climbing partner, Britne.

This book is a comprehensive collection of up to date advice for everything related to alpine climbing from injury treatment to equipment selection and efficient movement over technical terrain. It is also very heavy so you can train your grip strength while you read it.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 An incredibly valuable book for all sorts of climbers, at any ability level 27 août 2014

While published as a 2nd edition, the book is much more than a simple rewrite with small additions. The book is twice the size of the first edition, and none of this is filler; existing topics have been refined and loads of excellent new content has been added. The information is applicable to climbers of all abilities and anyone from an aspiring climber to an accomplished alpinist will find plenty of great material to hone their craft. After picking up some basics from a climbing class or 'Freedom of the Hills', this is the first book I would point any climber who is looking to take it to the next level to. Layton writes in a straight-forward, honest manner, with a dose of humor thrown in here and there. His love of climbing, training and sharing his knowledge is evident throughout.

The range of topics covered is broad, from learning how to more effectively work out and train for climbing during your "city time" to tips on how to lighten your backcountry load, bivy well and optimize nutrition while in the mountains. I was particularly pleased to see space dedicated to mental training and coping with the inevitable stress climbers face when a situation turns sideways and heads toward an epic. This is a topic that is too often glossed over and can often be the difference between success and failure, or between a rewarding experience and misery.

Whether you want to improve your training for sport climbing at a local crag or optimize your system for multi-day adventure climbs in the remote wilderness, I can highly recommend this book.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 novice or expert, amateur or pro, this book should be on EVERY climber's shelf! 28 août 2014

cover aside (the guy appears to be the prototypical climbing bum - iconic!) the content is encyclopedic, accurate, and as complete as anyone could make it who would slow down the research and writing long enough to actually publish. the chapters on training could easily be a stand-alone book, as could the chapters on "lifestyle". the chapters dealing with climbing technique and equipment are the best I've seen, and believe me, after forty years of guiding, training guides, and training mountain rescue personnel, I've seen most of it. I only wish Dr. Layton had offered more than a half-page on simulclimbing. I expect this "defect" will be cured in the eventual third edition. Every aspiring climber who has read Freedom of the Hills and wants more NEEDS this book.

This book is quite different than most "learn to climb" books, covering a much more advanced breadth and depth of knowledge. If you've already read FoTH, here's your next step.
