Présentation de l'éditeur

While digging through the ruins of a long dead civilization on the planet Mawcett, a team of Terran and Nordakian archeologists find an underground tunnel leading to a door in such extraordinary condition that it could have been fabricated as recently as that morning. They labor throughout the day, using every modern device available to them, but are unable to gain entry.

Then, in the early hours of the new day, seemingly in response to the screams of a frustrated, over-tired scientist, the door slides noiselessly open. Upon passing through the entranceway, the archeologists are stunned to find an elaborate complex in pristine condition. Summoning the courage to venture further, they enter a large circular chamber lined with strange electronic equipment, and immediately become engrossed in examining strange symbols etched into the floor near the center of the room. Suddenly, they're bathed in a strange light that paralyzes them where they stand. They watch in frozen terror as a clear, circular wall rises up around them. When the enclosed area begins to fill with a dense ocher gas smelling of persimmons, the dig site laborers, who had witnessed the activity from the periphery, run screaming for the entrance.

This is the third book in the A Galaxy Unknown series.

I guess you could read it as a stand alone (if you really wanted to), but you would miss a ton of action in the previous books if you did.

This book does not contain heaps of action.
But that is not a bad thing for this series.
We get to know the characters better and the world building is stronger in this book.
However, the action you do get is great.
Besides, I am positive that we get triple action in the next book :-)

I liked this book and it has a high entertainment value. At least for me it did.
Jenetta is the main reason why I read this series and she does not disappoint.
A spine of steel, a warm personality and a wonderful strategic mind.
Whats not to like?

In fiction, I generally categorize authors as having "great writing skill," and "great storytelling skill," which are not mutually exclusive. Clive Cussler tells great stories but doesn't strike me as having the greatest literary "skill," and Ayn Rand was an incredibly "skilled" writer but her stories were somewhat lacking; Neil Gaimann has lots of both. DePrima falls more towards the "great storytelling" side of the spectrum. I've read the first three Galaxy Unknown books and the stories are highly entertaining but can drag sometimes when he focuses too much on repeating details previously established within the same book - I understand the necessity to rehash what happened in the previous books for new readers' education.

That said, I've read three of the Galaxy Unknown books and have every intention of reading the rest of them. Jenetta Carver reminds me very much of David Drake's Honor Harrington with her somewhat annoying insecurities trimmed away. In other words, Carver is a more "likeable" character and I prefer DePrima's universe over the "Honorverse," not least of all because it's "Americanized" and there are non-humans (although...partially telepathic alien "cats"? That's a close parallel). The only other criticism I have of these books is that some of the recurring characters could use some fleshing out to differentiate them since it seems the character list has exploded at a rate faster than they can develop their own identities. While his forward to the first book referenced "hard sci fi" in terms of the technologies, I'd have to rate it as "medium-hard," since, aside from the appendices, little time is devoted to actually describing the ships' and planets' technologies aside from brief moments discussing what seem to be one-hit wonders (the razor-spring-firing, illegal, ship-safe pistol comes to mind).

Clones of Mawcett is my favorite of the series so far - the interactions with the Nordakians are highly entertaining and I feel like Clones of Mawcett is really getting the series "going," as opposed to the first two books which felt more like a prologue. If my review seems a little harsh, it's because I am engrossed in these books and have paid attention to them. I've found them extremely entertaining (increasingly so as the series continues), worth the purchase, attention-grabbing enough that I'm probably behind on something else important (like laundry) and well within the tradition of the Space Opera. Recommended highly with the warning that you may need to skip a page here and there when a character or the narrator goes off on a "just in case you forgot, here's a detailed accounting of something that happened 6 chapters ago," which is distracting but doesn't take away from the overall "enjoyability" of the novel.

... but for this series and author I feel it is much deserved. I bought all 3 available Kindle versions of the books in The Galaxy Unknown series and enjoyed them so much I got through them all in less than a week. My comments here are less about the (admittedly fantastic) books, and more about the unexpected contact I had with the author, Mr. DePrima.

I had a few questions for the author in regards to the release dates of the remaining books as well as a few small criticisms regarding repetitive passages. (The repitition in question was due to character and location refreshers spread throughout the series... useful if you have time between novels, less so when you read them back to back and notice that the refresher is a copy/paste).

Anyway, I saw the author had a website and there he listed contact info to get in touch. I wrote him a cordial email, not honestly expecting a response. Not even a few hours later I'd received a friendly response from Mr. DePrima. Not only are his books excellent adventures in and of themselves, but he also takes the time to respond to his fans with personal correspondence rather than canned emails.

All in all I cannot recommend the series enough. DePrima creates characters and plots that make the books hard to put down. His devotion to his fans speaks volumes as well. I cannot wait for the release of the next book and I applaud his interest in his fan base.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Warning this Series is Addicting! 18 octobre 2010

I strongly suggest you read the previous book in the series (A Galaxy Unknown and Valor At Vauzlee) prior to reading this installment.

The known-space-frontier's favorite protector is back and three times the fun! This particular installment is not as action-paced as the two previous books. However, this installment is no less intense or intriguing. This story is pure adventure and entertainment. My attention was so fiercely glued to each page, I felt like I never wanted the story to end.

To fellow dark urban fantasy readers who are looking for an SF but are unsure of what to take a chance on; I highly recommend this book and series. The writing style am also impatiently looking forward to the next book Trader Vyx due out 11/2/10.

I also recommend:
Space Trippers Book 3: A Frosty Farewell
Song of Scarabaeus
Cheat the Grave (Sign of the Zodiac, Book 5)

This series started of ok, but with some hiccups. The second book was pretty ok, but I didn't even finish this third installment. The writing is dull, just reciting events in a linear fashion. The basic premise is almost silly and there is still the juvenile fixation on tight clothing and high heels. The protagonist never messes up and just becomes more and more famous without it ever getting to her head or affecting her at all. No, don't bother.
