Présentation de l'éditeur

Robert Amiss is persuaded by his friend Detective Sergeant Pooley of the CID to take a job as a waiter in ffeatherstonehaugh’s (pronounced Fanshaw’s), a gentlemen’s club in St James’, London. The club secretary has allegedly jumped to his death from the gallery of this imposing building. Against most of the evidence, Pooley believes he was murdered.

Amiss finds himself in a bizarre caricature of a club, run by and for debauched geriatrics, with skeletons rattling in every cupboard. Why are there so few members? How are they financed? Will Amiss keep his job despite the enmity of the ferocious, snuff-covered Colonel Fagg? More importantly, will he solve the crime before someone else dies?

Biographie de l'auteur

Dr Ruth Dudley Edwards was born and brought up in Dublin, Ireland. Since she graduated she has lived in England, where she has been a teacher, a Cambridge postgraduate student, a marketing executive, a civil servant and, finally, a freelance writer, journalist and broadcaster. An historian and prize-winning biographer, her recent non-fiction includes the authorized history of The Economist, a portrait of the British Foreign Office and a book about the newspaper world of the mid-twentieth century. She uses her knowledge of the British establishment in her satirical crime novels: targets so far include the civil service, gentlemen's clubs, Cambridge colleges, the House of Lords, the Church of England, publishing, literary prizes and - always - political correctness. She has three times been short-listed for awards from the Crime Writers' Association.

If the term Gentleman's Club has come to mean in the United States, a strip bar with suspect, sticky stains on the floor, weak drinks and a huge sign that can be seen from the nearest interstate, then it is time to pick up a copy of Clubbed to Death. In the select world of "Club Land" where dignified front doors open to elegant foyers, sumptuous dining rooms and hushed libraries redolent with the whiff of cigars and brandy, one particular club stood out for its interesting ethnos-- a club endowed by it wealthy founder in the spirit of John Wilmot, the Earl of Rochester. Wilmot, a noted intimate of King Charles II, libertine and poet, died at the age of 32 of "dissipation", i.e., the effects of alcoholism and syphilis.

But all is not well at the ffeatherstonehaugh (pronounced Fanshaw) club. The members in residence are all elderly and eccentric. The servants are treated vilely. And just recently the last Secretary who had been brought in to reform the finances of the club had fallen to his death from the gallery.

Unsatisfied with the coroner's verdict of death by accident, another member of the club had urged Detective Superintendent Jim Milton and Sergeant Ellis Pooley to investigate the matter further. Sergeant Pooley's idea was to send the currently unemployed Robert Amiss into the mouth of the lion disguised as a waiter.

Despite the fact that the subject is murder, there is a quite a bit of hilarity to be found in the dreadful living circumstances that Robert finds himself subjected to, the far from benign club members and the machinations of Scotland Yard as they try to get to the bottom of the mystery.

Fans of Ida "Jack" Troutbeck will no doubt be disappointed to find that she does not appear in this mystery, but there's still a lot of fun to be had.

This author writes humorous very British mysteries with wit and fun, and with satire and excellent characterization. Not a "noir."

Robert Amiss allows Ellis Pooley to persuade him to apply for a job as a waiter at a gentlemen's club to try and find out what is going on there. Was the recent death of the club secretary suicide or murder? It soon becomes clear that certain stalwarts who have taken up permanent residence in the club are doing very nicely thank you and that they do not want any changes made by their reforming chairman. When that same chairman is killed in a bomb blast which knocks out Robert as well things become serious and Ellis and his boss, Jim Milton are sent in to investigate.

This is an amusing look at the arcane world of gentlemen's clubs with plenty of obnoxious characters as well as some likeable ones. Robert finds himself needing food parcels from Ellis because the food for the staff is so dire though the food for residents and guests is first class. I enjoyed this entertaining story which pokes fun at many stereotypes while telling an excellent crime story.

If you like your crime stories in the classic mould with interesting and likeable series characters then you may enjoy this series featuring Robert Amiss. It is best to read them in the order in which they were written so that you can see the relationships between the characters developing. The first book in the series is `Corridors of Death'.

Very well written, very funny and some exceptionally amusing bits about the fabled London clubs. One of the very best despite the rather loose plot.
