Revue de presse

Relentlessly suspenseful, topical, hard-hitting and richly rewarding, COBRA is a superb novel from an author who is acclaimed around the world as a brilliant voice in crime fiction. (Tangled Web)

The plot clicks along like a machine... The set pieces, such as a complex train-hopping action sequence, are slickly executed. This is an author in full charge of his technique, but he burnishes the mechanics of the story with delicious Kaapse characters and richly idiomatic dialogue. The feral pickpocket Tyrone Kleinbooi is one of Meyer's best characters ever, sly and quick with a strong sense of thieves' honour. (Sunday Times South Africa)

Praise for Deon Meyer (. . .)

The narrative is well-plotted, and the novel brings to life the rich and volatile diversity of contemporary South Africa. There's nothing flashy here, just a good story, very well told. Would there were more like it. (Spectator)

Deon Meyer is a top notch plotter and has created one of the best ensemble (and multi-racial) casts of any modern police procedural series. (Shots magazine)

Deon Meyer's gritty crime novels [are] part police procedural, part political thriller . . . What makes Meyer such a national treasure - and as good as anyone in the world - is that even if you have no knowledge or interest in South Africa's history or present, his books are compelling page-turners. Politics and race are just part of the intricately crafted superstructure bolted onto the rock-solid chassis of a top-quality crime thriller, driven by a writer with deceptive skill. (Books Live (South Africa))

Crime fiction with real texture and intelligence. (Independent)

A novel that is never less than readable. The South African setting is a major part of the appeal. Best of all, however, is Bennie himself, a humane recovering alcoholic riddled with self-doubt, and his interaction with his family, friends and colleagues. Long may he survive (Andrew Taylor, Spectator)

Tells a cracking story and captures the criminal kaleidoscope of a nation. (Times Literary Supplement)

This year's great discovery: classy, edgy writing, subtly plotted and beautifully balanced between fast-paced action, pungent social comment and the process of investigation. (Weekend Australian)

Deon Meyer's masterful new thriller . . . This is terrific stuff: fine plotting, superb characterisation, a constant thread of suspense, a multi-ethnic cast and an intriguing setting. (Shots)

A genuinely thrilling thriller. (Literary Review)

Meyer, the leading thriller writer in his native country, traffics in crime-novel situations familiar the world over: drunken cops, charming robbers, dangerous murderers, sudden violence-and sometimes, issues of race. Meyer's South Africa, however, is unique. His books, translated from Afrikaans, are usually set in the Cape Town region, where mountains spectacularly meet the sea. Amid these vistas his detective confronts his own-and his country's-tortured past and the legacy of Apartheid. (Wall Street Journal)

Présentation de l'éditeur

Why would a mathematics professor from Cambridge University, renting a holiday home outside Cape Town, require a false identity and three bodyguards? And where is he, now that they are dead? The only clue to the bodyguards' murder is the snake engraved on the shell casings of the bullets that killed them.

Investigating the massacre, Benny Griessel and his team find themselves being drawn into an international conspiracy with shocking implications. It seems it is not just the terrorists and criminals of Britain and South Africa who may fear the Professor's work, but the politicians too.

As the body count begins to spiral viciously, Benny must put his new-found love life aside and focus on finding the one person who could give him a break in the case: a teenage pickpocket on the run in the city. But Benny is not the only person hunting for Tyrone Kleinbooi . . .

Relentlessly suspenseful, topical, hard-hitting and richly rewarding, COBRA is a superb novel from an author who is acclaimed around the world as a brilliant voice in crime fiction.

Benny Griessel, Deon Meyer's flawed South African cop, is back in this taut, gripping thriller. This time it seems international terrorists are at work in a Cape Town. But is that who they really are? Meyer sweeps a series of topical issues into his latest tale, including political corruption, greed and immorality in the global banking system and the pervasiveness of mobile technology.
And just as Griessel's character is growing in stature, so his colleagues are steadily taking shape and form around him. Meyer powerfully puts flesh on their bones, leaving the reader looking forward to the next episode. Overall, a gritty, convincing five star crime read.

The story carries the reader along at a cracking pace. But bear in mind that the book was originally written in Afrikaans and contains much South African vernacular which for a South African makes it much more interesting than for a reader from another country. Many of the vernacular terms and phrases used in the English translation remain in Afrikaans as they cannot be successfully translated into English. This keeps the English book attractive to South African readers. For non-South African readers the glossary at the back of the book as excellent and goes part way to helping these readers understand the delights of South African English.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 A thrilling book set in the Cape 27 août 2014

A mystery story set in modern day South Africa, involving the Hawks, RSA’s equivalent of the FBI, SSA or Secret Service, a private protection agency, and the disappearance or death of a British man seeking refuge in a guest house in the Western Cape. The use of colloquial English interspersed with Afrikaans expressions are typical of the local way of life, and the dialogue is easy to follow. The characters, from pick-pockets to highly trained detectives are well described. The story is fast moving, easy to follow and well written. As one who lives in South Africa I could find no fault with the idioms, ways and personalities in this novel.

I have read most of Deon Meyer's novels and enjoyed them all but, though Cobra is a page turner I don't think it has the suspense of Thirteen hours, for instance. I always enjoy Benny Griessel and, here, he is satisfyingly surrounded by the members of the Police we have been reading about and getting to know from various other of Meyer's works.
I always enjoy Meyer's knowledge of and reference to the familiar streets and places of Cape Town. It makes his books seem very real as does his knowledge of everyday life and the working of the Police.
A very good read

I love that Deon Meyer's storylines run over a few days only. The pace is fast and the writing makes the reader run to keep up with it. As a South African, I appreciate reading about familiar places but this doesn't mean that the international reader is left wondering what's going on. Deon Meyer is by far one of my favourite crime writers, with his broke male detective characters adding a human element to his storytelling. I can't wait for the next book!
