Je connaissais les chansons et cet album réunit les plus grands morceaux du groupe.
Un délice pour qui aime rock progressif.

HASH(0x9b2fede0) étoiles sur 5 Decent value for the budget minded, but not for everyone else. 18 juillet 2013

I've decided to share some info with Yes fans who are curious about this box set, so let's discuss contents of the box.

ALBUMS: Going for the One - (1977)
Tormato - (1978)
Drama - (1980)
90125 - (1983)
Big Generator - (1987)

Sorry, but there isn't any Close to the Edge, Yes Album, or Tales From Topographic Oceans here (FYI, the set's albums are in chronological order by release). Very uneven balance here as the first 3 albums are catered toward the early prog era Yes fans. But the last 2 are for the commercial-minded fans. I however love all eras of Yes, so I've no complaints about the selection. This is definitely NOT for new fans, so look elsewhere if you're a beginner.

ARTWORK QUALITY: Like other "Original Album Series" sets, the box feels quite cheap and flimsy (especially compared to Sony's similar "Original Album Classics" sets. On the box itself, you do get a nice design of the Yes logo on the front and the back displays the albums with their track lists. Inside the box are the 5 "mini LP sleeves", and I put that in quotes because they are NOT mini LP sleeves. The albums are just small cardboard sleeves with the album artwork. Going for the One and Drama do NOT replicate the gatefolds of the original LP's. It's actually quite a challenge to get the CD's out of the sleeve without getting scuffs or scratches on them. It's also a challenge to get the sleeves back inside the box since it's just barely the size of a single jewel case. Of course, it's normal to have these kinds of flaws with a $20 box set of 5 CD's.

SOUND QUALITY: This is by far the most important aspect of the set. Big Generator is identical to the original 1987 Atco CD. IT IS NOT A REMASTERED VERSION!! So if you came here expecting a remastered Big Generator, you won't find it here. The other 4 CD's in the set are the same as the Rhino remasters from 2004, but WITHOUT the bonus tracks. Kind of a buzzkill there, but let me remind you again that this is only a $20 set, so the bonus tracks are obviously gonna go bye bye!

For only $20 (or less if you find it cheaper), you get 5 Yes albums that most fans either love or hate. If you don't have these albums, it's a decent deal if you're on a budget. If you don't have these albums but have more cash to spend, go for the Rhino remasters, which sound identical to most of the albums here but with bonus tracks and liner notes. Heck, go for the original 80's CD's if you want, as some people such as myself prefer their greater dynamic range and natural EQ, in addition to the originals being a bit cheaper than the remasters. Just don't buy this box set if you have any of the CD's already.

UPDATE: Since the new Yes - Studio Albums 1969-1987 box is out now, invest in that instead. I'll say it's a much better value than this pathetic 5 CD box. For about $30 more, you get 12 albums with better mini LP sleeves, and some replicate the original gatefolds. Another plus with it is that you get 66 bonus tracks spread out across the albums, just like the Rhino remasters! This is yet another reason that the cheaper 5 CD box is not worth your time. I learned that the hard way.

HASH(0x9b301048) étoiles sur 5 Five at a budget 23 février 2013
Par F. J. PRISCO - Publié sur
Format: CD
Contrary to the belief of their fans, Yes were never uninterested in popular success; when the Sex Pistols singled them out as 'dinosaurs' in 1977, the band responded by paring down the grand visions of their mid-70s albums. This sequence of recordings documents their progression from the fabulously overblown mid-70s to the more pointed mid-80s, when someone called them a perfect mix of New Age and metal.

The plus side: five Yes albums in one package, all worth hearing & very reasonably priced.

The minus: none, really - unless you wanted the bonus tracks available on the separate releases.

Who would buy this: those who already bought the "classic" albums 1970-72 [and possibly the mid-70s TOPOGRAPHIC and RELAYER releases] and wish to add several more cheaply, including the high-selling 80s albums.

The confusion: the only coherent line through these five albums is the fact of being official sequential releases under the Yes monicker . . . through the most dramatic personnel upheavals of their history, not to mention pop music in general. As a result, these CDs document very different versions of the band -- so much as to create virtually two different fan bases, often vehemently opposed to the other's preferences.

The target audience here, therefore, would be interested in both camps, and hearing how they got from one to the other: 90125 and BIG GENERATOR represent the loud, overproduced version of the band, with its genuinely popular hits; GOING FOR THE ONE represents the more orchestral earlier phase of the band, though not at its most grandiose extent; TORMATO and DRAMA stands somewhere in between. All have their rewards, and at least two are among the best of their kind. Those wishing a single disc of radio hits are strongly advised to look elsewhere [HIGHLIGHTS - THE VERY BEST OF YES]; those intrigued by their biggest albums of the 70s or 80s will find more to hear in this collection.

HASH(0x9b301288) étoiles sur 5 The Packaging 17 mai 2013

If you've ever bought an Original Album Series, you should already know what you're getting. It's the same old deal: five very slim cardboard cases for each disc, with their respective artworks on the front of each, all fitted snugly into a larger cardboard case (which is essentially the same size as a jewel case - slightly smaller), and no booklet(s) to speak of.

A couple of years ago, I never would have bought a package like this, since I was a sucker for good packaging and visual content (referring mostly to artwork and photos on the interior of the booklet). But, with the sheer amount of music out there to discover, it becomes almost impossible to buy every single album that you want to hear. So, eventually I started buying packages such as this, which have allowed me to catch up on past eras of music without having to resort to piracy.

If you're in my shoes, or you simply don't care about packaging AT ALL, then this item is for you. But, if you're a compulsive collector who wants to keep his collection free of any sub-par products, then go and buy the individual pressings.

I purchased "The Yes Album" back in '80, my first Xperience with Yes. I was very pleased, but never pursued the band any further until their '83 "90125" release. Till a few weeks ago that still was pretty much my entire knowledge and Xperience with Yes. A friend mentioned how they had really enjoyed Yes back in the day. It peeked my interest and I started looking through their catalog. I saw this five album (cd) compilation and thought for the price it was a bargain and would give me some more Xposure in which to judge Yes by. I want to qualify the following comments by first saying I really have never been a big Yes fan. "Going For The One" '77 was a very competent well put together album. Found it hard to believe that I'd never heard anything from it before. I think anyone who likes "The Yes Album" would enjoy this release. There may not be anything quite as good as "The Yes Album" material on this release, but it’s very listenable. I like it. "Tormato" '78: The fact is, the album cover on this album is probably what turned me off from Xploring more of the Yes catalog back in my college years ('80s). Not that this says anything about the music on this album, but I just detested that cover. After listening to it, I really can't say anything bad about it...maybe not up to "The Yes Album" standards, but really not bad. I forgot to mention, I recently listened to "Close To The Edge" '72...and I do see why their fan base is not as pleased with these later '70s releases, but "Tormato" does stand on its own merit. "Drama" '80: I already had a preconceived notion that I would not really care for this album due to Anderson & Wakeman not being a part of it. I'm sure there are many a Yes fan who are not happy with this album, but I was pleasantly surprised with how much harder or heavier it sounded, while still retaining the basic Yes feel. This is my favorite find of the package deal. "90125" '83: This is just an awesome album, it veers from the early '70s Yes as it is more radio hits friendly than the long three or four part songs they had become known for. "Big Generator" '87: This is similar in make up to "90125", but just not as strong. Where almost every song on '90125" got some radio play on the AOR stations..."Big Generator" really only had a couple, maybe three songs that got much rotation on the radio stations I recall listening to during its release.

I think for anyone who either knows they like Yes and just want to build their catalog or anyone who's unfamiliar and wants to find out for themselves...this is a good buy, good price for 4 good and 1 great album. Please know, that all but "Big Generator" were remastered and have bonus material back in 2003, but they will cost a little more. I actually liked what I heard so much, I'm probably going to go back and get the remastered versions with bonus material.

I bought this on a whim after coming across it by surprise locally. I had been in a prog mood lately, and had pondered getting the new Complete Studio Albums box set, as I was missing a large chunk of Yes's middle catalog (Tales-Drama). I had actually never owned or listened to those 5-6 albums, nor the first two Peter Banks discs. Seeing this, I figured what the heck....I could hear GFTO, Tormato and Drama for the first time, with the Rabin albums thrown in.Made for a handy package to pop in the car stereo. So, for that reason alone, I say it's a decent buy for someone like me looking to fill a gap in their Yes collection. The Complete Studio Albums set is probably a better overall deal, though, and if I didn't already own 4 of those albums, would have chosen it. I honestly may still, as there are 4 more still missing, and I enjoyed the similar Rush and ZZ Top collections.

I've only listened to each album a couple of times, other than 90125 (which I know well, and love). Early impressions are that Drama is fantastic, Tormato possibly underrated, and Going For The One possibly overrated. I found it lacking in energy, but maybe it needs a few more spins.
