2.0 étoiles sur 5 Where are the antonyms? 5 octobre 2013

After browsing through many kinds of dictionaries I decided to download this this one to my Kindle Paperwhite and use it as the default dictionary/thesaurus. It is a huge file (76MB!) and it offers sooo much.No wonder it got 5 stars. Because it uses that much memory I moved my other dictionaries into the cloud. Anyway I started using it and was astonished at the amount of synonyms it gave per definition! Great.
But where are the antonyms? Certainly not grouped near the word nor the synonyms. I read the instructions carefully and tried everything I could think of but I couldn't pull up antonyms. Having antonyms is one big reason I bought this book. I called Collins in the US and they directed me to Harper Collins in the UK. I sent them an email and am waiting for a reply. I complained to Amazon and they said they'd look into it. I'm very disappointed because otherwise this is a superb book. Wait and see. I'll update this review as more facts become known either way. Until then I advise you not to download this book if you want antonyms.
EDIT! Harper Collins in the U.K. replied to my email. They said that this Dictionary/Thesaurus has no antonyms. They should have said that in the description of the book. That's very close to fraud. Buyer beware!

Please note that this is NOT a Collins COBUILD dictionary. Collins COBUILD dictionaries explain every word definition in 100% full English sentences, but this dictionary does not. It has a similar format as the New Oxford American Dictionary which comes with Kindle for free.

With my English level, I hardly find a word which I don't get the meaning after looking up in an English dictionary, but I often saw this happening with this dictionary. This dictionary is a little more difficult to understand compared to Oxford dictionaries or Collins COBUILD dictionaries.

Also I found the dictionary is somewhat limited in showing the usage of each word. Dictionaries should list the most common definition of each word at the top and the least common definition at the bottom, but I found this dictionary sometimes doesn't follow that rule.

It does cover pretty much every word though; it's a huge dictionary over 75 Mb in file size. Another advantage of this dictionary is it illustrates all the synonyms of each word in place as the name implies("thesaurus").

Unless you are interested in seeing all the synonyms in one place, I don't see much value to purchase this dictionary as Kindle already has a free dictionary which is pretty good.

I would have loved to give this a good grade. On the Kindle Touch, it does everything I bought it for; the number of of lookup words and synonyms are vast. It does lack important terms of technical/chemical nature, but that's true for most dictionaries, and not something I'd hold against them. However, good as the Kindle edition is, for me the book is a failure: I don't need it on my Kindle - I need it on my Windows PC and Windows Phone Kindle app.

The Windows Phone app lets me download the book, but there is no way to search for a word except manually. There's not even a rough index or table of letters to help me get gloser to the right page. The Windows 8 app is even worse. "This title is not available on Kindle for Windows 8". And the Kindle for PC software keeps downloading until the end, then reporting "Download failed".

There ought to be a warning about how utterly useless this otherwise brilliant collection is on anything but the Kindle e-books.

This is the ULTIMATE dictionary.

My wife, being a Brit, has always been sold on Collins Dictionaries, she has had one since 1968, and probably even earlier when in school. She keeps a tiny purse-sized Collins Dictionary by her bed. We found that our large Webster Dictionary has not always been able to help, but Collins ALWAYS comes through. And I have to agree.

This Collins 2011 Edition is all she wanted for her recent birthday and she, and I, are delighted with it. She is currently reading a book that uses a lot of Olde English words, even some local fenland colloquialisms, only one of those words was in the Websters, and all but one were in the Collins - and there were probably 30 words unknown to us. The type face and style used, make this an easy-to-read Dictionary and makes words easy-to-find. We are very pleased with this product.

The re-seller was true to their word, the package arrived in time, in a good state of wrapping and even though it weighs a ton (!) it is well worth the money, for us at least.

I've explored several alternatives to the included Kindle Oxford dictionary, mainly out of being curious to see what alternatives exist. This dictionary excels in number of words covered, completeness of definitions, and formatting (for when I look up a quick definition by scrolling to the word). I had high expectations for the Webster's Collegiate Dictionary (because I'm rather fond of the print edition) but found that it was rather poorly formatted for Kindle with many words missing.
