I started to learn Japanese using the Clarke's and Hamamura's colloquial book. It's unquestionably great, especially due to the fact, that it starts to teach you essential Japanese script right from the start. It uses even the correct stroke order of the hiragana, katakana and kanji. Despite the fact that I have some language learning experiences (e.g. I am also fluent in Finnish), I did find the Clarke's approach a little to difficult for the absolute beginner. That is way I ordered Ogawa' s text. After passing the first month learning experience using this book, I can assure you, that it uses much frendlier approach. I've just completed second unit with no difficulties at all. It's not a bad idea that it builds the scripture gradually - at the end of each unit, first familiarise you with hiragana, later with katakana and in late units also with quite appropriate amount of kanji. As you progress, you come accross the dialoges, written in Japanese script and I already have a strong feeling that you can feel yourself much more confident reading and using the script in later units. So I can recommend this book for the absolute beginner like myself. Thank you for reading this review and have fun with learning beautiful and interesting Japanese language!
