Colonial Mexico 2nd edition 19 mars 2003
Par Chris J. Riedener - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
I think this is an excellent book. I was delighted to find a guidebook that focuses on such an under appreciated topic. It is well researched and well writen. It describes many of the major colonial towns in central and southern Mexico. It provides a brief history for each town, describes the significant buildings, as well as near bye attractions. The maps are accurate and easy to read. It will be one of the few guide books that I bring on my next trip to Mexico.

This is a great book on the "silver cities' of mexico. Reads like a novel, not a tour guide. very informative and entertaining. I've been to a few of the cities mentioned and now I feel I have to go back to see some of the things I missed!! A wonderful guide to parts of Mexico well worth exploring.

Ok, go and buy this book. I am saying this because it is indeed a good read on Mexico and its historic towns and not just because this author devotes 16 pages to my adopted town of Guanajuato!

More of a history book or almanac than a travel guide 1 novembre 2013

The colonial cities of Mexico are a cultural treasure, and this book is their definitive guide. From the Silver Cities up north to the Viceregal cities of the west and the intoxicating mix of colonial and indigenous cultures in the south, this book has New Spain covered.

If you're familiar with colonial Mexico, this guide will supplement and expand your knowledge. If you're not familiar with colonial Mexico, prepare to be amazed. This is your book.

It is neatly organized into chapters by city. Within the chapters there are sections dedicated to historic landmarks, cultural contexts, and a few thinly selected travel listings. There's a summary historical introduction, and at the end of the book there is an appendix with further demographic information about each city. There are a few black and white photographs, but nothing that would make this guide anything approaching a picture book. Something I noticed that is a bit strange is that the preview of the book shows color photographs for the frontispiece and introduction, but in print they're black and white.

Published in 2001, this book is getting a bit out of date, especially as a travel guide. You can expect that most of the listings of hotels have changed by now. Many landmarks that may have been in a state of ruin or disrepair may be fully restored by now. Still, these are minor issues that don't detract from the content which IS included.

Don't buy this book looking for a detailed travel guide or a pretty picture book. This is really for the reader wanting to learn more about the history and culture of Mexico after the Conquest and prior to independence.
