Some of the explanations of grammar are different from ones you see in other grammar books, which is nice. A novel approach to explaining grammar could be useful. However, there are enough mistakes in this book and enough ambiguous questions that it is not very useful, especially for a student studying by himself. As a tutor, I can explain some of the mistakes to my student or tell him to skip certain questions, but in general, it is not the best book. I thought getting a book specifically for the TOEIC would be useful for my student as he studies for the TOEIC, but I wonder now if another book on grammar (not specifically for this test) would have been more helpful.

In a review of Dr. Lee's earlier Columbia Common English Usage Mistakes at IELTS (Paperback), I wrote:

"Anyone who makes such a mess of the perfect tenses as this author makes on pages 35 thru 37 is not to be trusted. Buyer beware. (Of course I am prepared to back up my statement. I would not make it if I weren't.) Add pages 15 and 21, which probably means that wherever the text uses the present perfect or the past perfect, there will be more errors. I acknowledge the limited test, but I am using the "search inside" function that Amazon graciously provides. Many pages are omitted from the copyrighted material, as they should be. I tried to contact Dr. Lee directly but I can't find a way. Brad Johnston 5/8/12."
~~~~~~~
I'm sorry I was not able to get hold of Dr. Lee. He might have been able to correct the errors before this later text came out, in which the same errors are committed. Why do authors hide from us? They can utilize an army of proof readers but we can't help them if we can't get to them.
Uninformed opinions to the contrary, there IS a useful device in English by which we are able to show that by the time something happened, something else had already happened. One of my favorite examples is, "When I awoke, the sun HAD hit the snooze button and it was raining cats and dogs". Another is, "When the police arrived, the robbers HAD fled". When I awoke and when the police arrived, there was no sun and there were no robbers. They were ALREADY gone. The past perfect is NOT properly used to indicate that one past event preceded another, as careful study will demonstrate. This author apparently does not understand.
Note that my comments relate ONLY to the handling of two of the perfect tenses and not to the text as a whole. Brad Johnston, 3/21/13.
I think this material is useful for beginners, but I was not satisfied with the contents.
I hope more heavy materials to prepare for TOEIC.
